Tensions are mounting in Borno State following the alleged killing of Abdulrahman Mustapha, widely known as “Abchin,” by soldiers of the Nigerian Army on March 22, 2026. Witnesses report the victim was shot dead near the Federal High Court along the Polo Axis in the Karshen Kolta area of Maiduguri while returning from a Sallah visit to his siblings.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Mr. Mustapha was unarmed and posed no threat to the military personnel at the time of the incident. The shooting occurred during the festive period when residents were moving between family gatherings.

In a development that has further fueled public outrage, sources indicate that military personnel conveyed the deceased’s lifeless body along with his vehicle to the GRA Police Station. From there, his remains were transported to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where he was formally confirmed dead.

Civil society groups and residents have condemned the act, describing it as a grim example of the military’s alleged disregard for the sanctity of human life and the rule of law. Critics argue that such incidents undermine public trust in security institutions and foster a climate of impunity.

Human rights advocates are now calling on the Nigerian government to intervene. They insist that the authorities must uphold constitutional and international human rights obligations by launching an immediate investigation and ensuring that any soldiers found culpable face a prompt and fair trial.

As of press time, the Nigerian Army has not issued an official statement regarding the incident, and calls for accountability continue to mount from local communities demanding justice for Abdulrahman Mustapha.

The Nigerian Army has announced the start of online registration for its 91st Regular Recruits Intake (RRI), targeting both trade and non-trade applicants.

In a notice shared on its official Facebook page, the Army stated that the exercise will begin on 30 March and close on 17 May. It said the opportunity is open to eligible Nigerian citizens and stressed that the process is free of charge. It also cautioned applicants to stay away from fraudsters.

According to the guidelines, applicants must be Nigerians by birth and must be single. They are required to present a valid National Identity Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN). The Army added that candidates must be medically, physically, and psychologically fit, and must not have any criminal record.

For educational qualifications, applicants are expected to have at least four credits, including English Language, obtained in not more than two sittings. Accepted examinations include WASSCE, GCE, NECO, and NABTEB.

The Army further explained that those applying as tradesmen or women must possess relevant trade or guild certificates.

On age limits, non-trades applicants must be between 18 and 22 years old. Trades applicants must not be older than 26 years as of 30 June. The minimum height requirement is 1.68 metres for men and 1.65 metres for women.

Shortlisted candidates will take part in a screening exercise in their states of origin from 9 June to 23 June.

Applicants were advised to complete their registration through the official recruitment portal and print necessary documents, including guarantor forms. The Army warned that anyone who submits fake documents will face prosecution.

It also highlighted benefits of joining the service. These include career growth, competitive salary, access to education and training, healthcare services, and pension after retirement.

The Army urged interested candidates to apply early and follow all instructions carefully. It added that there are no special recruitment centres and no pre-selection computer-based tests for the exercise.

Security operatives have taken into custody a suspected bandit identified online as Sule Yellow, following a viral TikTok livestream that allegedly showed kidnapping activities and ransom proceeds.

Sule Yellow gained widespread attention after appearing in a livestream on March 4. In the footage, he was seen alongside another suspected bandit known as Auta, as well as other members of their group. The individuals were alleged to have spoken openly about their operations and made claims about involvement in kidnappings.

A separate video now circulating on X shows the suspect in handcuffs while surrounded by soldiers. The officers are seen questioning him about weapons believed to be linked to his group.

The clip also captures security personnel displaying a polythene bag said to contain ransom money. The funds are believed to have been recovered from a recent kidnapping associated with the gang.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement that provides full details surrounding the arrest.

The development comes amid ongoing military efforts to dismantle bandit networks responsible for attacks on communities and abductions for ransom.

In a related move on Monday, the police command in Ondo state arrested four individuals accused of supplying logistics to kidnappers. According to the police spokesperson, those arrested have made “useful confessional statements that are currently aiding ongoing investigations”.

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have neutralised five armed criminals and uncovered an illegal weapons production site in Odonget Community, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

This is contained in a statement issued by Yemi Sokoya, Major and Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, on March 13, 2026.

The operation was carried out under the command of Headquarters 82 Division of the Nigerian Army. It followed a recent ambush on troops who had responded to a distress call linked to a communal dispute in the community.

Military sources said the troops continued their follow-up operation between March 12 and March 13, 2026. During this period, soldiers conducted cordon-and-search operations and fighting patrols across several identified locations. The action formed part of efforts to locate those responsible for the earlier attack on security personnel.

On March 13, the troops encountered the armed group again within the area. A gun battle broke out during the encounter. Five of the attackers were neutralised, while others escaped from the scene.

Further search of the surrounding area led to the discovery of an illegal gun manufacturing facility. Authorities believe the site served as a production centre where criminal elements fabricated weapons used in violent activities within the locality.

During a detailed search of the facility, troops recovered three AK-47 rifle magazines, 10 locally made firearms and a toolbox that contained equipment used for manufacturing weapons.

The military later destroyed the illegal arms production site to prevent further use by criminal elements.

The Commander of 13 Brigade, Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, who led and supervised the operation, praised the troops for their courage and professionalism during the encounter.

He assured residents that the Brigade remains committed to ensuring peace and stability in the area. He also said troops will continue sustained operations, surveillance and patrols to track down fleeing suspects and prevent further threats to law-abiding citizens.

Security authorities also urged members of the public to support ongoing operations by providing timely and credible information that could assist efforts to eliminate criminal activities in the area.

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation HADIN KAI have repelled attempted terrorist assaults on military positions at Azir Bridge in Sector 2 and Banki in Sector 1.

According to a press release issued by the headquarters of the operation, the incidents occurred in the early hours of March 13, 2026. The attackers reportedly advanced in large numbers in what the military described as a desperate effort to overrun the two locations.

The statement noted that troops on duty responded immediately. Soldiers mounted strong resistance and executed coordinated counter-attacks that disrupted the movement of the insurgents and forced them to retreat from the areas.

Air support also played a key role in the operation. The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided close air support during the engagements, which the military said helped secure victory over the attackers.

The military command also dismissed reports circulating on some online platforms that suggested otherwise. It said the failed assaults contradict claims that troops had lost control of the locations.

The statement maintained that soldiers remain in charge of both Azir Bridge and Banki and continue to maintain operational dominance with strong morale and sustained action against terrorist groups.

The task force reassured residents of the North-East that it remains determined to eliminate terrorist threats and restore lasting peace in the region.

In the statement, the military said: “Troops remain firmly in control of the locations and continue to dominate the operational environment with high morale, decisive firepower and sustained offensive action against terrorist elements.”

Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a suspected kidnapper and rescued 19 people who were abducted in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The operation took place around Gidan Dogo after security forces received intelligence about the hideout of suspected terrorists linked to the recent abduction of residents in the Byazhin area of Bwari.

Captain Olawuyi Itunuoluwa, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at the Headquarters Guards Brigade, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. He said soldiers carried out the mission with support from personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilantes.

“The operation was launched following credible intelligence on the whereabouts of terrorists responsible for the recent abduction of residents from the Byazhin area of Bwari,” Itunuoluwa said.

According to him, troops confronted the suspects during the operation. The encounter led to an exchange of gunfire.

“During the operation, troops made contact with the bandits, leading to a firefight in which one of the criminals was neutralised, while others fled the scene with suspected gunshot wounds,” he said.

He stated that security personnel later searched the area and recovered weapons. All the kidnapped victims were also rescued during the operation.

“Further exploitation of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle and one locally fabricated firearm. Additionally, all 19 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued and evacuated to safety,” he added.

The army spokesman said the troops have returned to their base in Bwari. He noted that the rescued victims are currently receiving care.

Itunuoluwa also said the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, praised the troops and other security operatives who participated in the mission.

“The brigade will continue to intensify operations in collaboration with other security agencies to rid the territory and its environs of terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities,” he said.

Onasanya also reaffirmed the brigade’s commitment to protecting residents of the Federal Capital Territory and ensuring the security of Abuja as the nation’s capital.

The Nigerian Army has advised soldiers serving under the 14 Brigade in Ohafia to respect human rights and safeguard the rights of children while carrying out their duties.

The directive was delivered during the opening of a two-day sensitisation workshop for troops of the brigade. The event took place in Umuahia, Abia State, on Wednesday as part of the Army’s Civil-Military Affairs programme.

Army authorities also warned the soldiers against engaging in gambling and drug abuse. The troops were instructed to maintain discipline and professionalism while performing their responsibilities.

In addition, the soldiers received a warning about the use of social media. They were told not to upload confidential photographs or sensitive information online. Officials said such materials could be accessed by criminal groups and misused.

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs in the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Musa Awwal Etsu-Ndagi, explained that the workshop aims to remind troops about their responsibilities and the rights of civilians.

He said the training was designed to educate soldiers on their own rights, the rights of members of the public, and the protection of children. He also stressed the importance of proper conduct while interacting with civilians.

Etsu-Ndagi advised the soldiers to complete their Next of Kin forms accurately and ensure the information remains current. He said updated records would protect the families of soldiers from exploitation if a service member dies.

The senior officer also encouraged the troops to promote unity and understanding within their families.

During the workshop, the Deputy Controller of Narcotics at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Bekwele Chukwu, addressed the soldiers. He spoke about the dangers associated with the use of prohibited or controlled drugs. He warned that such substances could affect a person’s mental stability.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commander of the 14 Brigade, Brigadier General Ahmad Mansur Dikko, expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for organising the workshop for the troops.

Troops attached to Sector 1 of Operation Whirl Stroke have prevented a kidnapping incident along the Enugu–Otukpo Road and rescued three victims without any loss of life.

The development occurred on February 25, 2026, when soldiers stationed at the Forward Operation Base in Otukpo were on a night patrol. They received credible intelligence that suspected kidnappers had intercepted an 18-seater Benue Links bus with registration number TYK 221 YK. The vehicle was said to be carrying four passengers alongside a minor when the attack happened.

Security operatives moved quickly to the location and tracked the suspects along their escape route. Their swift action forced the kidnappers to abandon three of the victims. Although there was no direct confrontation during the operation, troops recovered a mobile phone believed to belong to the suspects at the scene.

The Force Commander praised the soldiers for their resilience, alertness, and effectiveness. He noted that their timely intervention helped avert what could have developed into a serious security situation.

He also urged motorists to remain vigilant. According to him, drivers should take note of unusual situations such as a lack of vehicular movement within a two-kilometre stretch and stop when necessary to assess their surroundings. He further advised road users to report any suspicious activity to the nearest security post to enable a quick response.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside local vigilantes and hunters, have neutralised a senior Boko Haram figure identified as Abdullahi Mafa in the Madagali axis of Zamfara State.

Security sources disclosed that Mafa, described as a former hybrid commander of the terrorist group, was killed during a coordinated operation in the area.

In a separate development, troops also apprehended a suspected logistics and drone supplier to the insurgents, Dauda Usman Gubula, during another mission in Madagali Local Government Area.

According to security analyst, Zagazola Makama, the encounter took place on Thursday. He said troops came in contact with suspected Boko Haram fighters during an ambush along the Visik River corridor.

The confrontation led to the death of the terrorist commander after an exchange of fire.

Makama further revealed that the alleged collaborator was arrested in a different operation. He said the suspect was picked up during a raid carried out at Madagali Motor Park.

Quoting officials, he stated that security operatives recovered several items from the suspect. These included two aerial drones and 20 solar power banks believed to be meant for terrorist operations.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, troops have sustained offensive actions across the region. The ongoing operations are targeted at dismantling Boko Haram cells and restoring normalcy in affected communities.

Troops under the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE have dismantled a suspected terrorist syndicate during an offensive operation in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, recording the recovery of arms, ammunition and other operational items.

The operation followed credible intelligence on the activities of a wanted bandit leader and his network. Security sources revealed that the group operated from a hideout located in Mtan Village, Utange Council Ward, within the local government area.

Troops deployed from Sector 1 moved to the identified location after receiving the intelligence. They encountered armed fighters at the hideout. A gun battle broke out during the advance. The suspects later fled the area under pressure from the troops.

Security forces searched the enclave after gaining control. Items recovered included two motorcycles believed to belong to the bandit leader, eight magazines, 162 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm special ammunition, 10 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition, and 44 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Troops also recovered links of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and seven empty 7.62mm NATO cartridge casings. A red Toyota vehicle found at the scene was disabled to stop its use for further criminal operations.

The Force Commander of the Joint Task Force, Moses Gara, applauded the intelligence unit for what he described as consistent and timely information that made the mission successful. He also praised the troops for their professionalism, resilience and tactical conduct during the raid.

He stressed the need for continued cooperation between security agencies and residents. He called on members of the public to sustain the flow of useful information to authorities, noting that intelligence sharing remains vital in the fight against terrorism and other crimes across Benue State.
