When humans turn animals: a cruel, evil treatment of animals at ‘Yanshanu abattoir, Jos

This year, Sentient Media reveals that every 60 seconds, one animal suffers abuse. One afternoon, I counted 483 drops of blood on the ground and lost counting to empathy of, what blood is it? But what really transpired?

A wounded cow (with blood flowclose to the eye) was being paraded to the slaughtering ground which is about a mile and half (sometimes farther) from the livestock’s market of ‘Yanshanu in Jos. Added to the feeble state of this animal was respiratory mucosa effect, yet a reckless herder (sometimes a guy/boy) hit the cow with a goad on the eye wound because at some point, the cow didn’t move or moved slowly (its front legs were tied together) –immediately the cow fell to the ground due to the brutal and merciless hitting. This was repeated until the destination was reached. Such oppression is irrefutably done daily. This is simply because it is an animal! What a pity.

This scenario conforms to the argument of Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation that “it would first be necessary to transform people’s attitude towards animal” Over 40 years ago, animal abuse was referred to as intentional act which causes pain to the animals. It sometimes brings too much suffering and even death. It comes in behaviors like beating, starving, choking etc., however, these maltreatments are rationalized in the ill and senseless feeling of ‘they’re animals’. But those acts beat conscience.

Yanshanu Livestock Market is a place where buying/selling of livestock are made daily. However due to its commercial string, most of the activities of dealers inflict severe suffering on the animals. Malam Suleiman Ahmad, Chairman Conflict Resolution ‘Yanshanu Market defended tucking livestock in a crevice space all in the name of transportation from villages to the market or from market to some destinations “we’re here for profits, [so] creating such fantasized comfort for animals will cost much [and] I know people don’t want meat costly.”

And on the issue of market herders inflicting unnecessary pain on the livestock while parading them out to eat or when marching them to the slaughtering ground, Malam Suleiman agreed that the herders sometimes overdo-it “let me be clear on something, due to unrest in our villages, they [Fulanis] protect their animals with several traditional methods and these sometimes remain even after sale – that’s why we use leather [plastic] to choke them when they refuse to stand up. However, we caution our boys on mishandling the animals as it is even un-Islamic and we put them in check with sanctions, but don’t forget, animals don’t understand you, to the good ones, it is the only language they understand, plus there are stubborn ones amongst them.”   

Admittedly, the African methods of animal husbandry values the goad, but the question here is, is it the most effective means of communication to animals? The answer is a capital No! This powerful oppression surely affects the health conditions of the livestock, so Malam Alkasim Ishaq, a vetinary outside the ‘Yanshanu Market condemned the recklessness reflecting that those keeping pets starve, let them stray and the cruel soul even beat, not to even mention some of the heartless dealers. He opined; “these people [dealers] are just here for business and time is money for them. Often, we vets around condemn their cruelty towards animals but you know our society [you become a black sheep for trying to better the system]. However, those hard beating and unreasonable tying affect the overall psyche and health of the animals.”

Whilst the vet expressing his concern, an individual who identified himself as member of Nigeria Livestock Association, Plateau State branch, lamented about his plight on unreasonable tying of animals and torture, because it stops the blood flow which explains the animals’ awkward behaviors sometimes.

It’s expected that such vast cruelty by humans should’ve been curbed by the government, but Malam Suleiman lamented that bad practices should’ve checked with government and Non-governmental organizations’ intervention. “We have written letters to the government but no response, so we can only do what is within our reach. In serious nations, they have abattiors and pay workers, no reckless beating and rush to make much money as we do.” He lamented.

However, going by the global animal husbandry, the vet and his friend pointed out that reforms need to start from the ordinary (not learned) members that made up of the animals’ bodies and organizations. And Mustapha Suleiman, a Vetinary Medicine student of Usman Danfodio University said; denial to understand the psychological condition of these guys [as he preferred to call animals] is what brought about abuses in our localities. He believed that if we pay good attention, we wouldn’t need to inflict pain on the animals with our traditional techniques.

But, it’s worrisome what the harshness of the herders on the animals is costing the host community – ‘Yanshanu. The livestock market is located in full residential area. Often, the maltreatment gets the animals wild – they end up going chaotic for about for over half an hour, smashing and aiming at everyone.

This discriminating treatment persists because humans fail to realize other living things’ response to stimuli – sometimes they’re feeble, they like, dislike; they feel hunger, anger, sick, even want to rest, but only when all these are understood. We should know that it is wrong to inflict suffering on other beings, even if not our own species. But attractive legislation on the subject matter is a priority.

Gunmen attack Jos prison

The Nigerian Correctional Service has, on Sunday, confirmed the attack of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Jos, Plateau State.

The spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Controller of Corrections, Francis Enobore, confirmed the incident, saying “The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State came under attack by gunmen who reportedly stormed the facility in large number with sophisticated weapons”

He further stated that “although they gained entrance to the yard, they are however trapped within as men from sister security services were immediately mobilised to assist the armed guards to cordon the perimeter wall and the entire area”

The attack was said to have been carried out at about 5pm on Sunday, and sophisticated weapons were said to have been used by the attackers.

Plateau speaker, 10 others apprehended

The embattled Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Abok Ayuba, and some members of his group have been arrested within the vicinity of the State Assembly in Jos, at about 3:15 pm on November 1, after laying siege in the State Assembly from dawn.

The State Police Commissioner, Edward Egbuka and some key officials of the different security outfits in the State, ushered them into Hilux vans while taking them away.

Abok was whisked away through the back gate of the State Assembly shortly after security agents bombarded the peaceful protesters and journalists with tear gas and sporadic gunshots to disperse them.

Although the House members said they were not told where they were being taken to as Abok kept shouting, “I cannot say if I am under arrest at this moment,” but it was gathered that they were taken to Abuja.

At the time of this report, security agents who had besieged the premises had withdrawn, leaving few personnel loitering around the vicinity while the teary-eyed youths reappear in groups discussing the development.

Sultan Sa’ad rewards Keke Napep rider with 500,000 naira

His Eminence, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar MNI, has honoured a Keke Napep rider, Malam Akilu Gangare in Jos, with the sum of NGN500,000, for returning NGN500,000 left in his Keke Napep to its rightful owner.

A passenger boarded Malam Akilu’s Napep to a particular place. After reaching his destination, the passenger hurriedly alighted leaving his back behind. A little while longer, Malam Akilu sighted the bag in his Napep after his passenger has disappeared. He opened the the bag out of curiosity only to see a large sum of money NGN500,000 inside.

Malam Akilu quickly turned back in search of the passenger. After he located him, he handed him back the bag with his money intact.

On receiving the news, His Eminence the Sultan made the necessary investigation and the information turned out to be true.

Yesterday, Saturday, 23-10-2021, His Eminence rewarded Malam Akilu in Jos with the sum of NGN500,000. The exact amount he honestly returned to the owner.

For His Eminence, this is not the first time of doing this kind of great gesture. He has done it several times before. It is his way of rewarding honesty and encouraging people to be good citizens.

No Maulud procession in Plateau this year—Troops

The troops saddled with the responsibility of maintaining peace and order due to the fragile peace in Plateau State have declared that there would be no Maulud procession across the state this year.

The Troops, also codenamed as Operation Safe Heaven, have in a statement signed by their spokesperson, Major Ishaku Takwa, said they had been directed “to ensure that no group organises any form of procession during the period of the Maulud.”

According to the statement, “Operation Safe Haven has noted the arrangement by some Muslim Youths on the Plateau to hold a procession to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW (PBUH) on Tuesday, 19 October 2021.

“Information received also indicated that the procession is organised without the knowledge of Jamaatul Nasir Islam (JNI), security agencies and the Plateau state government.

Nevertheless, the troops indicated that “While felicitating with the entire Muslim ummah on the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW (PBUH) and recognising the right to such processions under different circumstances, it is, however, expedient to state that the fragile peace on the Plateau does not present a conducive atmosphere for any form of procession at the moment.

“Further to this, Operation Safe Haven, therefore, wishes to draw the attention of the youths and members of the public on the ban of any kind of protest and procession in force in the state.

“The Military task force encourages Muslim faithfuls to observe the Maulud without any form of procession.

“The Commander, Operation Safe Haven, Major General Ibrahim Ali has directed troops to ensure that no group organises any form of procession during the period of the Maulud.”

Recall that there were in recent months a series of ethno-religious violent attacks and reprisals that led to the death of many and many others sustained injuries.

Gunmen kidnap former minister, Solomon Ewuga, in Jos

Solomon Ewuga, the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has been kidnapped.

Ewuga, who also served as a Senator, was kidnapped in the late hours of Wednesday in Plateau State.

The former Senator, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial district from 2011-2015, was returning home when the gunmen waylaid and abducted him.

His abduction is coming after the gruesome killing of the husband of former Minister of Information Prof Dora Akunyili, Dr Chike Akunyili, was reported.

 

Army to investigate murder of taxi driver by own personnel in Jos

The alleged murder of a taxi driver by some men of the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) for allegedly flouting the 10:00 pm curfew imposed on some parts of Plateau State is going to be investigated.

This was disclosed on Saturday by the spokesperson of the operation, Maj. Ishaku Takwa, in Jos.

Recall that the taxi driver, identified as Abdullahi Karafa, was alleged to have been beaten to death by soldiers around the Farin Gada axis in Plateau State.

During a condolence visit paid to the family of the deceased, the Commander of the Task Force, Ibrahim Ali, gave assurance that any soldier culpable of the murder would be punished.

The statement reads, “OPSH received with shock a report that its personnel deployed at Farin Gada beat and murdered a commercial taxi driver, Mr Abdullahi Karafa.

“Immediately we received the report, our commander visited the deceased family and condoned them over the unfortunate incident.

“The commander has since constituted a board of enquiry to unravel those behind the heinous act.”

Since after the murder of some 30 Muslim travellers in the Rukuba community of Plateau State, there has been tension which is as a result of attacks and reprisals, and that forced the Plateau State Government to impose a night curfew on some parts of the state.

Reminiscence of 7th September Jos Crisis

Tuesday was exactly 20 years since the breakdown of peace among communities and the beginning of the so-called ethno-religious conflict in Jos. Since then, thousands of innocent lives have been mercilessly killed, properties worth billions of naira destroyed, and hatred has been deeply entrenched, more than ever before, in the minds of the younger generation; vengeance has become a mantra on their lips. Thus, 7th September was a dreadful day that shouldn’t have repeated itself. But, unfortunately, it became the beginning of an era of chaos, conflicts and incessant killings.

Two things led to these horrible events. Firstly, religious leaders from both sides of the aisle did much to spawn the conflict either by abstaining from condemnation and reprimanding their audiences or fanning the flame with hate preachings. Secondly, and more morally reprehensible, politicians agreeably encourage the clash by not stepping up to quell the prerequisites that lead to the unrest. As a result, the conflicts have become a potent political weapon exploited by the elite to either consolidate power or amass luxury. Thus, the masses became pawns who reap the harmful consequences of the seed they never sow.

The crises have been heaped around many myths—that the conflict is an ethno-religious conflict is not only a hoax but an absurd claim that seeks to cast an illusion on the minds of the masses. Again, that Hausa-Fulanis have any grand plan to take over the helm of affairs in Plateau State is false. And, conversely, that the Christians are collectively responsible for the destruction of Jos Main Market, which plunged the Hausa’s into economic hardship, is equally false.

Few cabal members engineer these unfounded narratives to swerve the attention of the masses from demanding accountability from their incompetent leaders and have paved the way for kleptomaniacs and opportunists to reach up and embezzle our funds. To understand this better, reflect on what Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, said, and I quote, “As Jesus died on the cross for Christians, I am prepared to die for Benue people.” The same person has now refused to pay civil servants their salaries and remain negligent on development and infrastructure. Scenarios similar to this are countless. By the way, Shari’a was once exploited by northern governors to mislead gullible Muslims. So it is more about vested political interests and amassing of wealth than faith or ethnicity.

Luckily, the panacea to this menace is within reach of the masses; all they need is the necessary introspection to grasp the problem for what it is: class warfare. And it’s also to resist the temptation of acquiescing in the vile tactics of divide and rule. If one scrutinises the conflicts, the masses, not elites, are constantly the victims of the mayhem. What sort of a people will be so adamant about inflicting such untold suffering to each other?

Does the killing of fellow humans strengthen anyone’s determination or make anyone’s life better? Why then the insanity and the insensitivity towards each other while those vultures are relentlessly sucking the masses and plundering the state’s treasury? The masses must understand that they share a common enemy, whether Christians or Muslims and that their enemies are within their respective faith or ethnic group. Regardless of any differences, the elite are hellbent on enriching themselves; neither their children nor closed ones participate directly in any conflict for whatever reason.

It is time for the masses to reflect on their actions, grasp reality and tolerate one other. The series of events that unfolded from the onset of the first crisis to today have caused indescribable suffering to the people of Plateau. It has slowed development and clogged prosperity. However, peace has no alternative, and tolerance is the only rational covenant.

There was no attack on luxurious buses in Jos—Plateau gov’t

The Plateau State government has debunked reports making rounds that two luxurious buses had been set ablaze in Jos.

The report indicated that 2 luxurious buses conveying about 156 Igbo passengers had been set on fire.

This is coming a few days after violence erupted, which saw about thirty people killed.

The violence led to the imposition of a 24-hour curfew in the Plateau State capital, Jos.

Debunking the purported story, Mr Lalong, in a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Makut Simon Macham, said it“is purely the handiwork of crises merchants mischief-makers who want to create panic and instigate violence and fear among the people.

He added: “For the avoidance of doubt, the security situation in Plateau State is very much under control as security personnel have been deployed to all parts of Jos to enforce the 24-hour curfew still in force, as well as to ensure compliance with the dusk to dawn curfew in Jos South and Bassa LGAs.”

Prophetic treaty as blueprint for peace in Nigeria and beyond

There is nothing which, indisputably, guarantees peace and harmonious existence than justice. Justice alone can end banditry, kidnappings, communal clashes and ethno-religious crises, amongst others. A lack of it espouses the notion of reprisals, retaliation, and jungle justice within the affected areas. It allows marauding hoodlums, bandits and thugs to unleash an onslaught on equanimous, meek and defenceless communities. 

Islam promotes justice, provides practical solutions to lingering and inexorable brawls in different communities. Therefore, I expect that any perspicacious and sagacious leader/follower will accept that justice is the only mechanism that protects the inalienable right of everyone, guards against the plundering of properties by brigands and prevents the inviolable souls from being attacked. 

Further, most incessant attacks on various communities continue to linger because the culprits, accomplices, and syndicates usually go scot-free. For example, the recent attack on innocent Muslim commuters in Rukuba, Jos, where suspected disgruntled Christian militias killed about 28 of them in cold blood, unchallenged. The incident has portrayed the level of lawlessness and injustice in our society. Likewise, atrocities committed by some Muslim/Christian herders on both Christian and Muslim communities are also part of the examples of dominant and pervasive injustice by our leaders for deliberately refusing to bring the malefactors to book for justice to prevail.

In contrast, the system of justice, which was both advocated by Jesus and Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with them both), ensures proper retribution for the wronged, the subjugated, the oppressed and defenceless citizens. Exultantly, this system was the one that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to end the sustained hostility and animosity between Al-Aws and Al-Kazraz, who happened to be the archenemies of one another.

Thus, when Prophet (SAW) migrated to Madina, he signed a treaty between them (Aws and Kazraj), Muhajirun (immigrants) and even non-Muslim allies. This had provided lasting solutions that brought about peace and harmony between them. Below is part of the treaty they gave credence to in the presence of SAW, as contained in Ar-Rahiq Al-Maktoum:

1. They should resist and stand against injustice or seek to appropriate something unfairly, encroaches upon or causes mischief among believers;
2. They all should stand against one who does so even if he were one of their offspring;
3. If one kills a believer intentionally and there is evidence for that, he will be retaliated in like, unless the family of the slain person pardons him;
4. All believers are to take a stand against him;
5. A believer is not allowed to advocate or give shelter to an initiator of evil or troublemaker. 

If our society today will adhere to these teachings, extrajudicial killings will indubitably come to a standstill.
