The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Muhammad, co-led a 5km walk on Saturday, August 17, 2024, to strengthen collaboration and promote work-life balance between the two agencies. 

The walk, tagged “Work-Life Balance,” started at the FRSC Headquarters and traversed Herbert Macaulay Way to the Wuse Market traffic light, before returning to the FRSC Headquarters via Maputo Street. 

CGC Adeniyi expressed determination to enhance inter-agency collaboration, particularly in curbing smuggled vehicles on Nigerian roads.

He stated the importance of fostering a spirit of friendship and brotherhood among security agencies. 

Corps Marshal Muhammad believed that organizing social activities and exercises between sister security agencies could be key to building a prosperous nation.

He expressed appreciation for CGC Adeniyi’s attendance and noted that the NCS has been a solid partner to the FRSC on several occasions. 

Both leaders agreed to continue the monthly exercise to improve health and well-being, and to explore ways to work together to achieve their mandates.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the redeployment of new Sector Commanders to 20 states across Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the redeployment is part of the Corps’ strategic intervention mechanisms aimed at enhancing operational activities and quality service delivery.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed approved the redeployment, which is designed to drive the policy thrust of the Corps and reposition it for greater performance.

The move is also intended to reinvigorate the Corps’ operational activities in the field Commands.

The Corps Marshal explained that the redeployment was propelled by the renewed zeal to reposition the Corps for greater performance and quality service delivery.

The affected states include Kano, Rivers, Plateau, Gombe, and 16 others.

Corps Commander Maxwell Lede, formerly the Principal Staff Officer II to the Corps Marshal, has been deployed as the Sector Commander in Plateau State. Meanwhile, Tijani Muhammed, the outgoing Zonal Head of Operations in Sokoto, takes over as Sector Commander in Kano State.

Other redeployed officers include Saliau Ibrahim, who moves from Kano to Jigawa; Adeoye Irelewuyi, who takes over as Sector Commander in Ogun State; and Yahaya Adikwu, who has been redeployed from Yola to Adamawa State.

The Corps Marshal has charged the newly deployed Sector Commanders to report to their new posts immediately and “hit the ground running” to enhance safety on the roads.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said no fewer than 25 persons died while 53 persons were injured in an accident that occurred along the Kano-Kaduna highway on Monday. 

The corps’ public education officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said this in a statement in Abuja. 

He said the crash involved a trailer conveying about 90 persons at about 03:15 a.m. Mr Ogungbemide said the accident was caused by a speed violation that eventually led the vehicle to lose control. 

“However, the FRSC emergency and rescue team was able to rescue 12 persons without injury from the crash. 

“The rescued victims have been taken to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for proper medical attention,’’ he said. 

Mr Ogungbemide said the truck driver had been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution. 

The spokesman, however, quoted the FRSC corps marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as calling on traditional and religious leaders to join FRSC in the campaign against conveying humans, goods, and animals by trailers. 

Mr Shehu also implored them to caution their subjects against travelling on such trailers.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, has expressed profound sadness over the tragic loss of 14 worshippers who were crushed by a trailer after Friday prayers in Kano State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which occurred in Imawa town, Kura LGA of Kano State.

Senator Barau commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls and the speedy recovery of the injured.

He described the incident as “shocking” and offered his deepest condolences to those affected.

The statement read, “With profound sadness, we mourn the tragic loss of 14 worshippers crushed by a trailer after Juma’at prayers on Friday in Kano.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. We offer our deepest condolences in this hour of unimaginable grief.

“We pray for the souls of the departed to rest in Aljanatul Firdausi and for the Almighty Allah to grant strength and comfort to those they left behind,” the statement added.

Tragedy struck Kano on Friday when a trailer with registration number MKA 537XN lost control and ploughed into worshippers, leaving a mosque after Friday prayers, killing 14 people and injuring dozens. 

The accident occurred in Imawa town, Kura local government area, shortly after the Friday prayer, when the driver of the trailer coming from the Kaduna axis lost control and ran into the worshippers.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, stating that nine of the deceased were buried on the same day, while those injured are receiving treatment at a hospital. The driver of the trailer is currently at large.

The FRSC Kano Sector Commander, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said, “Upon receiving the distress call, FRSC Kano State Command promptly dispatched personnel to the scene, alongside other security agencies, to initiate rescue operations and provide immediate medical assistance to the injured victims.”

Abdullahi emphasised the FRSC’s commitment to road safety and urged all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies. 

He also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

In the Utako District of Abuja, a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Hilux Van was involved in a collision with a car on Tuesday as officials pursued an erring driver.

The car, driven by Bashir Bashir, was carrying his pregnant wife, Olabisi, to her office at the time of the incident.

Bashir recounted, “We were coming from Lugbe to work when the road safety officials attempted to stop a vehicle ahead of us.

“The driver didn’t comply, prompting the officials to chase after it. Unfortunately, our car was caught in between the FRSC van and the fleeing vehicle, resulting in a collision from behind.

“My pregnant wife, seven months along, was in the car and has been taken to the hospital,” he added.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command, announced that four people have died and 56 others have been injured in a road crash on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway. 

Mr. Kabir Nadabo, the Sector Commander, relayed the traumatic incident to journalists, which he said occurred at Sabon Sara village along the expressway on Tuesday. 

He said that the tragic accident involved a trailer (Iveco) with registration number MKA99YS, and it occurred at around 03:30 hrs. 

“The combined rescue teams of RS1.113 Zhipe and RS1.17 Birnin Yero conducted the rescue,” he said. 

According to Nadabo, the initial investigation revealed that the cause of the crash was the overloading of goods and humans, as well as fatigue. 

He said, “Further investigation of the incident shows that 73 people were involved in the crash, 59 got injured, and sadly, 4 were deceased.” 

He said the injured have been conveyed to St. Gerard and AP Smart Hospitals, all in Kakuri. 

“Kaduna State is a critical corridor that links the North to the South; this is why the Kaduna State Command has activated several measures and homegrown initiatives. 

”Like the establishment of roadside camps at Kakau and Rigachikun to promptly respond to crashes, the provision of standby ambulances at Jere, Doka, Kakau, Gonin Gora, Rigachikun, Zaria, and Tashar Yari, with experienced staff to handle first aid care. 

“Also, the corps in the state will continue to aggressively create awareness and sensitization among road users on general safety ethics. 

“For the record, I want to inform the public that henceforth, any driver arrested for overloading of goods and humans will be arraigned before the courts for prosecution for endangering the lives and properties of Nigerians. 

“Already, concerted efforts have resulted in the arrest of the trailer driver involved in this crash. 

“I wish to emphatically reiterate our resolve in reaching out to stakeholders, particularly transport unions, to preach and sensitise their drivers on the dangers of excessive speeding, overloading, dangerous driving, and using their phones while driving, among others,” he said.

An auto crash in Kano has led to the death of at least 18 persons, a development that brought tears to the eyes of their loved ones and relatives.

The traumatic incident reportedly occurred along Kano-Ringim Road in the Gabasawa local government area of the state.

The sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ibrahim Abdullahi, had confirmed the journalists about the accident.

He stated that the accident involved a total of 35 passengers in two buses, out of which 18 were burnt beyond recognition while 12 others sustained serious injuries.

“We received a call about the accident at about 8:35 p.m. on Friday and dispatched our personnel to the scene to rescue the victims,’’ Abdullahi said.

He further stated that some of the deceased were given mass burial at the accident scene, and others were handed over to their relatives.

Ibrahim said the injured victims were taken to Murtala Muhammad General Hospital, Kano.

Motorists have been admonished to drive at a regulated speed limit and observe the road and driving rules and regulations to prevent road traffic crashes along the major highways to save the lives and properties of the commuters.

Officer Gibson Ogbeinama, the unit head of operations, acting for Toro Unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, made the charge while supervising the potholes filling along Bauchi Jos road embarked by the Toro Uplift Association in Goljarendi Magama Gumau Toro local government Bauchi state.

Ogbeinama said three major factors contribute to road traffic crashes, among which are the environmental factor, the mechanical factor and the human factor. Therefore motorists should notice and adhere to driving guidelines by giving extra care to dangerous potholes to prevent frequent occurrences of road traffic crashes.

In his remark, the chairman of Toro Uplift Association, Abdulfath Mu’azu, expressed delight and appreciated the Road Safety Corps members’ support during the exercise. Added that Toro Uplift will continue working hand in hand with FRSC members when the need arises; hence the need is to save the lives and properties of the citizens.

Similarly, the chairman of Magama Youth Forum, Haruna Dan Maigoro, whom Jamilu Musa represented, the association secretary, thanked Toro Uplift for the gesture, adding that the fill-up exercise will go a long way in mitigating the risk of accidents along the road. He, however, relished youths for coming out in numbers to support the exercise.

Six passengers in two commercial trucks were killed in an auto accident on the Bauchi–Kano expressway in Bauchi State on Tuesday.

According to an eyewitness, the collision occurred about 12:15 p.m., involving a Sharon Ford and a Volkswagen Golf transporting groceries.

The passengers in both vehicles, according to the witness, were burned beyond recognition after a head-on collision.

When contacted, Rilwan Adamu, spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Bauchi State Sector Command, said he would make details of the accident accessible to the press following the rescue operation.

However, details in respect of the accident have so far not emerged.
