Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS12.31 Potiskum Unit Command, on Sunday morning intercepted an overloaded Volkswagen Golf along the Potiskum–Gombe (PKM-GME) highway.

The vehicle, with registration number TRN 59 SB, was stopped during a routine patrol as part of the Corps’ nationwide enforcement operation targeting overloading and other critical traffic offences.

According to the patrol team, the vehicle was found to be carrying passengers and cargo in excess of the permitted limit, a violation that significantly increases the risk of road accidents.

“This action is in line with the Corps’ commitment to reducing road crashes caused by reckless practices such as overloading,” a spokesperson for the unit said.

No injuries were reported during the interception. The vehicle has been impounded, and further investigations are underway.

The FRSC continues to urge motorists to comply with traffic regulations and prioritise safety for all road users.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command has deployed 1,889 personnel for a special Eid-el-Fitr patrol operation aimed at ensuring smooth vehicular movement and safety on highways.

The Sector Commander, Ibrahim Abdullahi Matazu, stated that the operation, scheduled to run from March 27 to April 2, includes 1,348 regular marshals and 541 special marshals.

The Daily Reality reports that their duties will include traffic control, enforcement of road safety regulations, and providing immediate assistance to accident victims.

Matazu urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules, warning against reckless driving, underage driving, and car racing during the festive period.

“The FRSC Kano Sector Command wishes the good people of the state a peaceful and hitch-free Sallah celebration,” he said.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command has intensified efforts to curb the dangerous practice of mixed overloading of trailers with goods, animals, and human passengers. 

It was gathered that the initiative aims to enhance road safety and prevent fatal crashes resulting from unsafe transportation practices.  

In a statement on Friday, FRSC Kano Public Relations Officer CRC Abdullahi Labaran disclosed that the sector command, led by Sector Commander CC UM Masa’udu, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, conducted a special public sensitization campaign on February 20, 2025. 

The exercise took place along Kano-Maiduguri Road, near the Muhammadu Buhari Interchange Flyover, Hotoro, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  

The campaign was prompted by the tragic road crash on February 13, 2025, at the same location, which claimed 23 lives and left 48 others injured. 

Investigations revealed that the accident was caused by a dangerously overloaded trailer, a practice that significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents.  

During the sensitization exercise, CC UM Masa’udu warned drivers, transport operators, and stakeholders about the severe dangers of mixed overloading and emphasized the need for strict compliance with safety regulations. 

He reiterated that the FRSC will not tolerate traffic violations that put lives at risk.  

The campaign was attended by representatives of key transport unions, including the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), who pledged their commitment to raising awareness among their members and ensuring safer road transport practices.  

The FRSC Kano Sector Command reassured the public of its continued efforts to promote road safety awareness and strict enforcement to prevent further tragedies. 

It urged road users to cooperate with authorities and adopt safer transportation practices for the well-being of all.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that 411 Nigerians died in 2024 while attempting to scoop fuel from fallen tankers across the country.

This was disclosed by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, during a press briefing on the Corps’ 2024 special patrol operations in Abuja.

According to Mohammed, the FRSC recorded significant improvements in road safety compliance in 2024, with a 26% increase in adherence to traffic rules and a 23.5% reduction in traffic law violations compared to 2023.

He noted that 21,580 traffic offenders were arrested in 2024, a sharp drop from the 29,220 recorded in the previous year.

Discussing road traffic crashes (RTCs), Mohammed stated that the Corps documented 9,570 RTCs in 2024, a 10% decrease from the 10,617 incidents recorded in 2023.

He added that injuries from these crashes also slightly decreased, with 31,154 people injured in 2024 compared to 31,874 in 2023, representing a 2% reduction.

However, the FRSC Corps Marshal revealed a 7% rise in fatalities, with 5,421 deaths recorded in 2024, up from 5,081 in 2023.

Of these fatalities, 411 were linked to fuel scooping, which accounted for 7.6% of total deaths.

Mohammed described the practice of scooping fuel as “the very monster the Corps is fighting,” and emphasized that without these incidents, the fatality figure for 2024 would have stood at 5,010.

The FRSC continues to advocate for strict compliance with traffic laws and urges Nigerians to avoid the dangerous act of scooping fuel from crashed tankers to prevent further loss of lives.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Muhammad, co-led a 5km walk on Saturday, August 17, 2024, to strengthen collaboration and promote work-life balance between the two agencies. 

The walk, tagged “Work-Life Balance,” started at the FRSC Headquarters and traversed Herbert Macaulay Way to the Wuse Market traffic light, before returning to the FRSC Headquarters via Maputo Street. 

CGC Adeniyi expressed determination to enhance inter-agency collaboration, particularly in curbing smuggled vehicles on Nigerian roads.

He stated the importance of fostering a spirit of friendship and brotherhood among security agencies. 

Corps Marshal Muhammad believed that organizing social activities and exercises between sister security agencies could be key to building a prosperous nation.

He expressed appreciation for CGC Adeniyi’s attendance and noted that the NCS has been a solid partner to the FRSC on several occasions. 

Both leaders agreed to continue the monthly exercise to improve health and well-being, and to explore ways to work together to achieve their mandates.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the redeployment of new Sector Commanders to 20 states across Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the redeployment is part of the Corps’ strategic intervention mechanisms aimed at enhancing operational activities and quality service delivery.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed approved the redeployment, which is designed to drive the policy thrust of the Corps and reposition it for greater performance.

The move is also intended to reinvigorate the Corps’ operational activities in the field Commands.

The Corps Marshal explained that the redeployment was propelled by the renewed zeal to reposition the Corps for greater performance and quality service delivery.

The affected states include Kano, Rivers, Plateau, Gombe, and 16 others.

Corps Commander Maxwell Lede, formerly the Principal Staff Officer II to the Corps Marshal, has been deployed as the Sector Commander in Plateau State. Meanwhile, Tijani Muhammed, the outgoing Zonal Head of Operations in Sokoto, takes over as Sector Commander in Kano State.

Other redeployed officers include Saliau Ibrahim, who moves from Kano to Jigawa; Adeoye Irelewuyi, who takes over as Sector Commander in Ogun State; and Yahaya Adikwu, who has been redeployed from Yola to Adamawa State.

The Corps Marshal has charged the newly deployed Sector Commanders to report to their new posts immediately and “hit the ground running” to enhance safety on the roads.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said no fewer than 25 persons died while 53 persons were injured in an accident that occurred along the Kano-Kaduna highway on Monday. 

The corps’ public education officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said this in a statement in Abuja. 

He said the crash involved a trailer conveying about 90 persons at about 03:15 a.m. Mr Ogungbemide said the accident was caused by a speed violation that eventually led the vehicle to lose control. 

“However, the FRSC emergency and rescue team was able to rescue 12 persons without injury from the crash. 

“The rescued victims have been taken to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for proper medical attention,’’ he said. 

Mr Ogungbemide said the truck driver had been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution. 

The spokesman, however, quoted the FRSC corps marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as calling on traditional and religious leaders to join FRSC in the campaign against conveying humans, goods, and animals by trailers. 

Mr Shehu also implored them to caution their subjects against travelling on such trailers.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, has expressed profound sadness over the tragic loss of 14 worshippers who were crushed by a trailer after Friday prayers in Kano State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which occurred in Imawa town, Kura LGA of Kano State.

Senator Barau commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls and the speedy recovery of the injured.

He described the incident as “shocking” and offered his deepest condolences to those affected.

The statement read, “With profound sadness, we mourn the tragic loss of 14 worshippers crushed by a trailer after Juma’at prayers on Friday in Kano.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. We offer our deepest condolences in this hour of unimaginable grief.

“We pray for the souls of the departed to rest in Aljanatul Firdausi and for the Almighty Allah to grant strength and comfort to those they left behind,” the statement added.

Tragedy struck Kano on Friday when a trailer with registration number MKA 537XN lost control and ploughed into worshippers, leaving a mosque after Friday prayers, killing 14 people and injuring dozens. 

The accident occurred in Imawa town, Kura local government area, shortly after the Friday prayer, when the driver of the trailer coming from the Kaduna axis lost control and ran into the worshippers.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, stating that nine of the deceased were buried on the same day, while those injured are receiving treatment at a hospital. The driver of the trailer is currently at large.

The FRSC Kano Sector Commander, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said, “Upon receiving the distress call, FRSC Kano State Command promptly dispatched personnel to the scene, alongside other security agencies, to initiate rescue operations and provide immediate medical assistance to the injured victims.”

Abdullahi emphasised the FRSC’s commitment to road safety and urged all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies. 

He also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

In the Utako District of Abuja, a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Hilux Van was involved in a collision with a car on Tuesday as officials pursued an erring driver.

The car, driven by Bashir Bashir, was carrying his pregnant wife, Olabisi, to her office at the time of the incident.

Bashir recounted, “We were coming from Lugbe to work when the road safety officials attempted to stop a vehicle ahead of us.

“The driver didn’t comply, prompting the officials to chase after it. Unfortunately, our car was caught in between the FRSC van and the fleeing vehicle, resulting in a collision from behind.

“My pregnant wife, seven months along, was in the car and has been taken to the hospital,” he added.
