Benue Governor Alia Renews Call for State Police

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has reiterated his support for the establishment of state police, saying the move is necessary to tackle the country’s worsening security challenges.

The governor spoke on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television. He argued that the creation of state police was long overdue and would strengthen efforts to address insecurity across Nigeria.

Alia said the Nigeria Police Force is overstretched because of the growing security demands. He also noted that military personnel may not always have sufficient knowledge of local terrains, which makes effective security operations more difficult.

“State policing should have begun long before now. If we have our state police with the power to command and direct, it will be more beneficial.

“So I think it is ideal. I know that the National Assembly has done some bit of that, and the State Assemblies are also playing their own role and making it a continuum of conversation.

“It’s even going to be more improved on what people are thinking, the fears people are having, or the reservations they’re having on the establishment of the state policing.

“I have been one of the first advocates of state policing way before the national conversation began.

“As it is said, who feels it knows it all. For us in Benue State, we felt it, we know what it is, we understand insecurity, we understand what it means for some help, either to be on the way or little help that came our way.

“So the establishment of state police is something ideal that could have been done like yesterday,” he said.

The governor also acknowledged ongoing legislative efforts on the issue. He said both the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly have continued discussions on the proposal. He expressed confidence that concerns and reservations surrounding state policing would be addressed as the process progresses.

Gunmen Kill Benue MACBAN Chairman After Peace Meeting

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Fresh tension has spread across parts of Benue State after unknown gunmen killed the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the state, Alhaji Risku Muhammad, alongside his associate, Yakubu Isah.

The attack reportedly took place on Friday at Okudu community in Otukpo Local Government Area shortly after the victims attended a peace meeting in neighbouring Ohinmini LGA.

Sources said the meeting was organised by the Divisional Police Officer of Ohinmini. Community leaders and Fulani herders attended the dialogue to discuss ways to restore peace in Ayunne Community, where a recent attack claimed several lives.

Residents said the victims were travelling home after the meeting when armed men intercepted their vehicle and opened fire on them.

The eldest son of the deceased, Idris Muhammad, confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation with journalists on Friday night. He said his father came under attack while returning from the peace meeting.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, also confirmed the killing and expressed concern over the development.

“It is true that the state chairman of MACBAN was killed within Otukpo Local Government Area this afternoon. The killing has raised tension in the community and neighbouring areas,” Ogiri said.

He appealed to residents to remain peaceful and assured them that security agencies were handling the situation.

The Chairman of Ohinmini Local Government Area, Adole Gabriel, said the deceased participated actively in the peace dialogue before the attack occurred.

“You know there was a crisis at Ayunne Community where some people were killed some time ago, and the DPO of Ohinmini convened a peace meeting involving Fulani herders and members of the community.

“I was told the meeting was fruitful and, at the end of it, the man (MACBAN chairman) left. Unfortunately, I learnt that some gunmen ambushed his vehicle at Okudu Community in Otukpo Local Government Area and killed him alongside one other person,” Gabriel said.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed that it received a report of the incident. The command’s spokesperson, Udeme Edet, said an investigation had started.

“I have received the report and investigation is ongoing,” Edet said.

Communities in Otukpo and Ohinmini local government areas have recorded repeated violent attacks in recent months. Several of the incidents were linked to suspected armed herders.

Meanwhile, the national leadership of MACBAN condemned the killing. The association described the incident as a “dastardly and deeply disturbing act.”

In a statement signed by its National President, Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, the group said the circumstances surrounding the murder had raised serious concerns.

MACBAN stated that it was troubling that a leader who attended a peace meeting became a victim shortly afterwards. The association also raised concerns over reports that one of the deceased’s children, who is a lawyer, was allegedly attacked in a village about a week earlier.

The group urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.

“The killing of community leaders and peace advocates threatens efforts towards reconciliation, dialogue and peaceful coexistence among communities. Those who seek to destabilise society through violence must not be allowed to succeed,” the statement added.

The association also sympathised with the family of the deceased and members of MACBAN in Benue State. It reaffirmed its commitment to peace and cooperation with security agencies in addressing insecurity across the country.

The operation formed part of ongoing pre-wet season activities aimed at securing farming communities.

Soldiers of the COAS Intervention Battalion XI acted on credible intelligence about the presence of suspected terrorists around the Agasha area.

They moved to the location and secured the surroundings, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The individuals were identified as Mr Sule Ibrahim and Mr Salmanu Risko from Nasarawa State, alongside Mr Abdulkareem Haruna from Jos.

Nigerian military neutralise armed syndicate, recover ammunition in Benue raid

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Troops under the Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE have dismantled a suspected terrorist syndicate during an offensive operation in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, recording the recovery of arms, ammunition and other operational items.

The operation followed credible intelligence on the activities of a wanted bandit leader and his network. Security sources revealed that the group operated from a hideout located in Mtan Village, Utange Council Ward, within the local government area.

Troops deployed from Sector 1 moved to the identified location after receiving the intelligence. They encountered armed fighters at the hideout. A gun battle broke out during the advance. The suspects later fled the area under pressure from the troops.

Security forces searched the enclave after gaining control. Items recovered included two motorcycles believed to belong to the bandit leader, eight magazines, 162 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm special ammunition, 10 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition, and 44 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Troops also recovered links of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and seven empty 7.62mm NATO cartridge casings. Family demands justice after Nigerian Army convoy allegedly killed Benue farmer on Katsina-Ala Road

By The Daily Reality

A family in Benue State has accused a military convoy of killing a farmer, Mr Aondover Tseshom David, along the Katsina-Ala Road, an incident they described as reckless homicide and an abuse of power, SaharaReporters, a Nigerian online newspaper, reported.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. The deceased was said to have been hit by a military convoy while attending to his daily activities aimed at supporting his family.

Relatives alleged that after the incident, security operatives dumped the farmer’s corpse at a police station. The body reportedly remained there until family members were contacted and compelled to arrange its retrieval.

The deceased’s first child, Miss Aondover Msendoo, demanded justice and described the incident as devastating and inhumane.

“My name is Aondover Msendoo. I am a 300-level Nursing student at Bayero University, Kano, and the first child of six,” she said.

“On Thursday, January 22, 2026, my life and that of my entire family were irrevocably shattered. My beloved father, Mr. Aondover Tseshom David, a poor, hardworking farmer from Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, was brutally run down and killed by a military convoy along the Katsina-Ala Road.”

She said the family’s pain was worsened by how her father’s remains were treated after his death.

“The horror did not end with his death. His lifeless body was carelessly dumped at a police station as if he were trash, and left there until we, his traumatised family, could gather the strength and money to retrieve him. This act of profound indignity added immeasurable pain to our already unbearable loss,” she said.

Miss Msendoo said her father was the sole provider for the family and struggled daily to cater for his wife and six children.

“My father was the only provider for our family. His life was one of struggle, sacrifice and resilience. Just last July, we endured the agony of his kidnapping from his farm. We sold what little we had and borrowed money to pay a large ransom for his release,” she said.

She added that after his release, he returned to farming in an effort to rebuild their lives before his death.

“He survived criminals and kidnappers, only to be killed not by bandits, but by those sworn to protect the lives of Nigerians,” she said.

According to her, the family now faces severe hardship. She said her mother is overwhelmed, while relatives have mounted pressure for a quick burial due to increasing mortuary bills.

“We are now destitute. My mother is broken and under intense pressure from extended family members to bury my father immediately because of escalating mortuary costs. My five siblings are very young, and their future is now uncertain,” she said.

“As a student, I am struggling to see how I can continue my education while carrying this burden and at the same time fighting for justice for my father.”

Miss Msendoo rejected suggestions that the incident was accidental.

“We are convinced this was not an accident. It was an act of reckless homicide and a gross abuse of power, followed by the degrading treatment of my father’s remains. This speaks to a culture of impunity that has become common in our country,” she said.

She expressed concern that the case could be ignored without public attention and legal action.

“We fear that without the powerful voice of Nigerians and strong legal advocacy, this crime will be ignored and my father will become just another anonymous statistic,” she said.

The grieving daughter appealed to human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), to intervene and assist the family.

“Therefore, I humbly and desperately appeal for help. Please help us secure justice for my father. Help us hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure that no other family goes through this twin trauma of loss and indignity,” she said.

“We need guidance, legal expertise and strong advocacy to navigate this fight against a formidable system.”

Despite their circumstances, she said the family still believed in justice.

“We are poor, but we are not without hope. We believe in the rule of law and in champions who make it work for people like us,” she said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army and the Benue State Police Command had not released any official statement on the incident.

We’ll go after Benue killers—COAS

By Anwar Usman

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, says the Nigerian Army will bring to justice the perpetrators of the recent killings in Benue, Plateau and other parts of the country.

Oluyede made this statement on Saturday in Akure during a second quarter 2025 media chat organised by the Department of Civil-Military Affairs, Nigerian Army Headquarters.

The media chat was themed “Military – Media Collaboration: Panacea for Enhanced National Security and Development.”The COAS, who was represented by Maj. Gen. Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Div., Nigerian Army, Ibadan, said the military is ready to ending the spate of violence, particularly in North-Central Nigeria.Oluyede, who said that the president had given very clear orders, explained that they would remain engaged in Plateau, Benue, Kwara and quite a number of states that were experiencing insecurity.

“We are out, fully deployed and tackling the menace head-on.“In Benue particularly, you will see in the coming weeks, very elaborate security arrangements to ensure that all that is going on there completely stops.

He further stated that, “The Army cannot be everywhere at once. Nigeria is a vast country but we are not as large in number as many people believe.

“We rely heavily on the support and cooperation of the local population to provide timely and credible information.

“In some cases, unfortunately, the people are not very helpful in terms of the information they give out, which delays our reaction time. That must change if we are to win this fight together,” he said.

NAN reports that, the COAS called on media personnel to verify facts before publication, and help in building national security and development to combat misinformation and sensational reporting.

According to him, the social media space, especially, is flooded with misinformation, disinformation and outright lies.“So, we are appealing to the media practitioners to reach out to us before putting out unverified stories.

“We are satisfied with the support we’ve received from the media so far and we hope to deepen that synergy to ensure national security is not undermined by sensational reporting,” he said.

Flood cuts off Makurdi–Abuja Highway hours before Tinubu’s visit to Benue

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Hours ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Benue State, the Makurdi–Lafia–Abuja highway was shut down after a devastating flood rendered the road unusable.

Reports show that rising floodwaters submerged the key access route into Makurdi, causing major disruption to motorists and passengers who found themselves stranded.

Many were forced to either delay their travel plans or seek safety in nearby areas.

The timing of the incident has sparked concern, especially as it occurred during increased security and logistical activity in anticipation of the President’s one-day visit to sympathize with the people of Benue following the recent massacre in Yelewata.

The affected road is one of the major corridors linking the state capital to the Federal Capital Territory, and its closure has raised fresh questions about the state of infrastructure and emergency response in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season.

Details about the impact on the President’s itinerary remain unclear at the time of filing this report.

MCAN mourns Benue massacre vctims, calls for balanced media coverage on insecurity

By Uzair Adam

The Muslim Corpers’ Association of Nigeria (MCAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic killing of over 200 people in a brutal attack on Friday night in Yelawa, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Daily Reality reports that the development was disclosed in a statement by the National Executive Council of MCAN on Tuesday.

MCAN, in the statement signed by its National PRO, Hadi-Almu Umar Faruk, condemned the attack in strong terms and called on government authorities to ensure justice is served.

It described the massacre as a “heinously inhumane act of violence” and emphasized that the sanctity of human life is a divine trust that must be protected.

“No cause can ever justify such wanton bloodshed. A society where life can be taken with impunity is a society in crisis,” the statement said.

MCAN also urged media organizations across Nigeria to give balanced attention to cases of insecurity in other parts of the country, especially the Southeast, Northwest, and Northeastern zones, where lives continue to be lost regularly.

“Balanced and comprehensive reportage is not only a journalistic duty but a powerful tool in awakening national conscience and mobilizing the collective will to act against injustice,” it stated.

In addition, the association advised all Muslim corps members serving in volatile states like Benue, Borno, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Imo, and Zamfara to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk areas, and stay connected with local MCAN units for safety.

MCAN, in the statement, offered prayers for peace and protection across Nigeria.

FG deploys additional troops in Benue

By Anwar Usman

The Federal Government has deployed additional troops to Benue State in response to the latest deadly attack in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of many of residents.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, stated this on Monday in a statement.

Akume condemned the deadly attack and reiterated the federal government’s commitment to end the violence.

He said President Bola Tinubu swiftly ordered a full-scale military operation to flush out the perpetrators and restore peace in the area, following the “mindless and disheartening” killings in the state.

He said, “I express profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his swift directive for a full security operation to rid Benue of these killers and bring the perpetrators to justice. It is to be noted also, that the federal government has rendered assistance through NEMA, while more troops have been deployed to Benue state to handle the explosive situation.

“Expressing grief over the merciless killing of many of innocent men, women, and children in the state, Akume described the incident as a wound to the country.

He said, “The continued bloodletting and mindless killings across Benue State are both disheartening and utterly condemnable.

“This latest reprehensible act, one among too many, is not merely a tragedy for Benue; it is a deep wound to the soul of our nation.

“These dastardly acts are not restricted to Benue State alone. Plateau and Zamfara states also suffer the same fate. These killings are economically deterministic, not religiously driven.”

Akume called on leaders and stakeholders in Benue to set aside all differences and urgently unite to chart a sustainable path to peace.
