Bauchi State

Celebrating Gov. Bala Mohammed’s achievements and the need to rehabilitate the Bauchi-Ningi Road

By Usman Abdullahi Koli

Leadership is often defined by its tangible impacts on ordinary people’s lives. In Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed’s transformative vision has ushered in a new era of development, safety, and economic revitalisation. His dedication to infrastructural development and human-centred governance proves his attentiveness to building a better Bauchi for all.

Governor Bala’s administration has relentlessly addressed the state’s infrastructural challenges. By constructing new roads and repairing bridges damaged by floods, the governor has significantly improved residents’ connectivity and mobility. These efforts have facilitated the smooth movement of goods and services and contributed to Bauchi State’s economic resurgence, making it an attractive destination for investors and visitors alike.

The recent inauguration of 500 officers for the Bauchi Road Traffic Agency (BAROTA) is yet another feather in the Governor’s cap. This initiative aims to safeguard the lives of road users, enforce traffic regulations, and maintain order across the state’s bustling roads. By collaborating with other road safety institutions, these officers will play a crucial role in ensuring that drivers adhere to all protocols, thereby reducing accidents and enhancing the overall safety of both motorists and pedestrians.

While celebrating these commendable achievements, it is imperative to draw the Governor’s attention to the pressing need to rehabilitate the Bauchi-Ningi Road. This vital artery links Bauchi to numerous local government areas and neighbouring Jigawa and Kano States and has been in disrepair for years. Its current condition has deteriorated to alarming levels, with daily reports of ghastly accidents claiming lives and destroying vehicles.

The road’s strategic importance cannot be overstated, especially as it is the main route for two major markets, Gadar Maiwa Monday Market and Durun Sunday Market. During market days, reckless driving and the pothole-ridden terrain lead to frequent accidents. For traders, commuters, and other road users, navigating this stretch has become a perilous ordeal that demands urgent intervention.

Though the Bauchi-Ningi Road falls under federal jurisdiction, Gov. Bala’s track record of prioritising the welfare of his people positions him as a leader capable of championing this cause. By leveraging his influence and proactive governance style, the Governor can initiate discussions and collaborations to expedite the rehabilitation of this critical road.

Gov. Bala’s willingness to address infrastructure challenges demonstrates a rare blend of empathy and pragmatism. By extending his administration’s efforts to the Bauchi-Ningi Road, he can save countless lives, protect properties, and restore confidence among road users. A repaired Bauchi-Ningi Road would enhance safety and stimulate economic activities, further boosting the state’s economic capacity and ensuring seamless connectivity.

In Sen. Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State has a leader who listens, acts, and delivers. His strides in road construction, bridge repairs, and road safety initiatives accent his deep concern for the welfare of his people. As we commend him for these remarkable achievements, we also urge our national representatives—including our Senator, House of Representatives members, and the Speaker of the State Assembly—to collaborate with the Governor and prioritise the rehabilitation of the Bauchi-Ningi Road.

This collective effort will address the urgent needs of this critical infrastructure and strengthen the legacy of progress and safety that Gov. Bala Mohammed’s administration has established. We can look forward to a safer and more prosperous Bauchi State.

Sadique Baba Abubakar’s politics of principle

By Mukhtar Jarmajo

Certainly, a democratic system of governance is predicated on the idea that, as long as the people can elect their leaders in the three strata of government and representatives in the legislatures, society will be better, given that government policies and programmes will reflect the people’s yearnings and aspirations. While this is true, to fully realize this ambition, the full participation of the citizenry in the entire democratic process cannot be overemphasized.

Citizens must uphold their responsibilities in the name of nation-building by electing only leaders who genuinely understand society’s challenges and are sincerely willing to address them. This crop of politicians can be identified through their campaign manifestos. The issues raised, ideas discussed, and points made during campaign rallies, discussions, and interviews by aspirants tell significantly how they feel about their society and their burning desire to work towards raising the people’s living standards to a higher threshold.

Therefore, it is essential for voters to consider the backgrounds of political candidates and their plans when choosing at the polls. For Nigeria’s democracy to thrive, everyone must work to educate the public about the importance of active participation in the democratic process and making informed choices at the ballot box.

This, most probably, is retired Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar’s school of thought, which is why he has remained steadfast in talking to the people, especially in Bauchi State, on the need to engage in the politics of principles while prioritising the general development of the society.

Notably, Abubakar contested for the governorship position in Bauchi State in the 2023 elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform. This has been his call since the 2023 election campaigns.

At every forum, he praises the politics of principles, noting that it is the only path to a better society. Through the politics of principles, the nation will get the right leaders who can work hard to deliver democratic dividends to the people. When the right leaders are in place, the children of ordinary citizens will gain access to quality public education and enjoy the same advantages as everyone else, enabling them to attain their full potential and realise their ambitions.

More so, there will be access to affordable quality healthcare services; food will be sufficient and available on every home’s table; there will be more jobs for the teeming youth; affordable housing will be made available so everyone can live in decent shelter; and, most importantly, the security of lives and properties can be assured.

Bala Mohammed: A leader par excellence, a mandate for glory and growth

By Usman Abdullahi Koli, ANIPR

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” This profound metaphor resonates deeply in the context of Bauchi State, where Governor Bala Mohammed’s dedication and visionary governance are sowing the seeds of transformation, elevating Bauchi into a beacon of progress. His re-election is not merely a continuation of policies but a renewed commitment to fostering hope, growth, and a brighter future for all.

Governor Bala Mohammed embodies humility, passion, and an unyielding commitment to public service. His journey from a distinguished Senator to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and now as Governor illustrates a leader devoted to selflessness and service. His transparency and community-centred governance ethos have left an indelible legacy that resonates across the state.

Born on the 5th of October, 1958, Bala Mohammed began his educational journey at Duguri Primary School in Bauchi, where he graduated with a first leaving certificate. He attended Government School Bauchi from 1972 to 1976, obtaining his WAEC certification. After completing his advanced-level studies at the North East College of Art and Science in 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maiduguri.

Bala began his civil service career as an administrative officer at the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, progressing to the Presidency as a Principal Administration Officer. His rapid ascent through the ranks—from Chief Supplies Officer at the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals to Deputy Director at the Federal Ministry of Transport—culminated in his voluntary retirement to pursue a political career.

Under Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration, a remarkable passion for education has flourished. With an investment exceeding N13 billion in this sector, he recognises education as the cornerstone of a prosperous society. His administration has consistently supported students by covering WAEC, NECO, and UTME fees for thousands, ensuring that no student is denied educational opportunities due to financial constraints.

Beyond financial assistance, his administration has renovated over 100 schools, constructed more than 50 new institutions, and provided essential learning resources, fostering an environment conducive to quality education. Continuous investment in technical and tertiary institutions reflects a commitment to a holistic education that addresses the diverse needs of the state’s youth.

Under his stewardship, the health sector has also witnessed a remarkable transformation. His dedication is evident in the construction and renovation of over 204 primary healthcare centers and general hospitals across the state. Understanding that health is wealth, he tirelessly ensures that every citizen—especially those in rural areas—has access to quality healthcare services.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Bala swiftly responded by distributing over 85,000 face masks and implementing stringent health measures, saving countless lives. His collaborations with development partners have successfully eradicated polio, and his ongoing efforts to combat diphtheria and other infectious diseases have earned him accolades locally and internationally. Recently, he approved the upgrade of the Misau General Hospital to Federal Medical Centre status, fully equipping secondary healthcare centres across various local government areas.

A hallmark of Bala Mohammed’s leadership is his proactive approach to security and crisis management. He has significantly enhanced their operational capabilities by equipping military and paramilitary agencies with over 50 vehicles. His decisive actions during crises and efforts in conflict mediation demonstrate his commitment to peace-building.

Bala’s respect for traditional institutions and support for religious and community leaders foster a harmonious atmosphere in Bauchi, positioning it as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. His governance style is rooted in inclusivity, ensuring every group has a voice and representation in decision-making.

Governor Bala’s administration has revitalised Bauchi’s agricultural sector. Over 8,000 metric tons of fertiliser have been produced, and 1,000 farmers have been trained in modern agricultural techniques. The state has also been positioned as a food production hub. Distributing fertiliser to over 10,000 farmers has significantly increased yields, enabling irrigation farmers to export their produce beyond state borders.

Perhaps the most visible legacy of Bala Mohammed lies in infrastructure development. His administration has constructed over 300 kilometres of roads, including significant projects such as Duguri to Yashi (68.4 km) linking Tafawa Balewa and Alkaleri LGAs, Itas to Gadau (24.5 km), Udubo to Gamawa (25 km), Sade township road (2.8 km), Dualization of major roads, including the Kano road (22 km), Maiduguri road (14 km), and Jos road (12 km).

Additionally, the construction of flyovers in Bauchi, particularly at Wunti and the Central Market, underscores his commitment to enhancing infrastructure and urban development. Thanks to the governor’s relentless focus on urban and rural development, this transformation is so profound that visitors may require a guide to navigate the city.

As an indigene of Ningi LGA, I can personally attest to the life-changing impact of the new road network in my hometown of Nasaru. The network has opened up economic opportunities, improved access to markets, and reduced travel times for residents. This is a testament to how Governor Bala’s leadership enhances people’s lives.

Under the auspices of the Kaura Economic Empowerment program, Bala Mohammed’s administration has launched the most successful and sustainable empowerment initiatives in Bauchi State’s history.

Key accomplishments include the distribution of 156 commercial buses across the 20 LGAs, the distribution of 1,500 tricycles to support local entrepreneurs, the implementation of a micro-grant scheme providing N10,000 each to petty traders, with a total funding of N200 million, the launch of the N75 million KEEP initiatives per LGA for youth and women empowerment and allocation of N500 million for soft loans to traders and artisans.

As Governor Bala Mohammed marks his 66th birthday, we celebrate him as a leader, father, mentor, and patriot. His life exemplifies the power of perseverance, vision, and service. The people of Bauchi and Nigeria are fortunate to have a leader who addresses today’s challenges and is dedicated to creating a future that benefits future generations.

Recognised for his remarkable achievements in Bauchi, Bala has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Federal Government Award of Excellence and the esteemed title of CON. His traditional titles, such as Kauran Bauchi, Turakin Ningi, and Wazirin Dass, reflect the respect and admiration he commands across diverse communities.

As we look ahead to the next three years of Bala Mohammed’s administration, one thing is clear: Bauchi is on a path to greatness. His leadership has established a solid foundation for growth, and his vision will continue to propel the state to new heights. The people of Bauchi have once again placed their trust in him, and he has repeatedly proven that he is worthy of that trust.

Governor Bala Mohammed’s journey is far from over. His determined dedication to the people of Bauchi, his passion for development, and his commitment to good governance will continue to inspire us all. As we celebrate his achievements, let us also look forward to the brighter future he is building for us all.

Happy 66th birthday, Your Excellency. May your days be long, and may your leadership continue to shine as a flare of hope and progress for all.

A legacy of strength and wisdom: Remembering Emir Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya

By Usman Abdullahi Koli, ANIPR

In the rainbows of history, some leaders leave an indelible mark that time can never erase. Alhaji (Dr.) Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya, the revered Emir of Ningi, was one such leader. His influence reached far beyond the borders of his emirate, touching lives with his wisdom, strength, and dedication to his people. His departure marks the end of an era, a monumental loss not just for Ningi but for the entire nation.

Born in 1936, Alhaji Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya was destined for greatness. His educational journey began at Ningi Elementary School and continued through Bauchi Middle School. He later attended the School of Hygiene in Kano and earned a diploma in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Before ascending the throne in 1978, he made significant contributions to the Ningi Emirate Council, the Medical and Health Department, and other critical roles within the region’s governance.

Ningi Emirate, a land steeped in history and resilience, has long held strategic importance in northern Nigeria. Founded by Islamic scholars who migrated from Tsakuwa in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State, the emirate’s origins are rooted in a principled stand against unjust taxation. Throughout his reign, Emir Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya upheld these principles, ensuring that justice, fairness, and equity remained the foundation of his leadership.

As Emir, Alhaji Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya was a steadfast guardian of tradition and a visionary leader who steered Ningi through an era of transformation and progress. Under his leadership, the emirate witnessed significant development initiatives that significantly improved the quality of life for its people. His reign was a masterful balance of tradition and modernity, preserving Ningi’s rich cultural heritage while driving progress.

The people of Ningi hold their late Emir in the highest esteem, remembering him as a just and fair leader deeply committed to their welfare. His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide future generations.

We are reminded of the Hausa saying, “Kwari garin jan kaya, kwarin da ba ruwa ya ci mutum, da akwai ruwa da ya ci duniya,” which translates to, “The wasp is known for its resilience, even without water, it can take a man down; with water, it could conquer the world.” This saying, deeply rooted in the spirit of the Ningi Emirate, speaks to the enduring strength and determination that defined Emir Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya’s life.

Another saying resonates within the emirate: “Ko yaki ya ci Ningi, zai bar Dutse,” meaning “Even if war defeats Ningi, it will leave behind its mountains. ” This demonstrates the resilience that the Emir exemplified throughout his reign.

His journey into royalty began in 1959 when he was turbaned as the District Head and Chiroman Ningi. Over the decades, his leadership was marked by wisdom, courage, and commitment to his people. More than just a ruler, he was a mentor, a guardian of tradition, and a beacon of progress. His reign embodied the resilience and strength of the Ningi Emirate, much like the majestic elephant known for its unyielding spirit.

Alhaji (Dr.) Yunusa Muhammad Danyaya’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those he served. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life dedicated to service, leadership, and the upliftment of his people. His contributions to the Ningi Emirate and to Nigeria will never be forgotten. Though the giant has fallen, his impact will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Usman Adamu Sufi: The last hope

By Abubakar Ibrahim Bako

The Bauchi State political permutation has just started growing, leaving the electorate with futile calculations that would re-jeopardize the state to another version of where it is now. However, since the 2023 general elections, many politicians of substance have gone away from their political allies. But Hon. Usman Adamu Sufi, despite not aspiring for an elective post during the past elections, remains a single person committed to touching the lives of the good people of Bauchi State.

On the plus side, Sufi has garnered goodwill from all sides of the state for the past many years, making the state’s products eagerly await the day they will pay him back for the contributions he has been offering to the state. People’s sympathy is what every politician dreaming of becoming successful needs.

Mr. Adamu’s political dexterity makes him stronger than those who went away from their people until the eve of another election. Notwithstanding, electorates want someone to visit them in the form of condolences, wedding ceremonies, and other things that will make people feel a sense of concern for the commoners.

In addition, Hon. Usman Adamu Sufi appears to be the only person who will play the card for the position of governor without much ado or political stress. This is because he is very clean and healthy, which could pave the way for him to be sold to the electorate, making it difficult for others to win against him.

The way people troop to his camp in the state alerts one to start thinking by saying, “What is this gentle dashing out to them?” Okay, as he is fondly called, Sufi becomes a household name for the humane action he always displays. One can hardly wake up in the morning without hearing about the gesture he extends. He is always making headlines in the state.

Being the last hope for the electorate, I would like to encourage Hon. Usman Adamu Sufi to keep doing what he has been doing to make the lives of commoners manageable. Equally, I would like to urge the people of Bauchi State to be hell-bent on canvassing their massive support for him in any elective post to which he might aspire.

Hon. Musa Azare: Championing transformation and unity in Katagum LGA

By Usman Abdullahi Koli, ANIPR

He is well-bred and had sufficiently sipped from the fountain of life to give back to society with interest. What more would one ask for?
