At least 23 suspected bandits were neutralised in a coordinated military operation after armed groups launched attacks on Shanono and Tsanyawa local government areas of Kano State between the night of January 1 and the early hours of January 2, 2026, according to the Nigerian Army.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Major Babatunde Zubairu, who said the operation involved joint task force troops on the ground and the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

According to the statement, troops successfully contained the attacks in Kano. They inflicted heavy casualties on the assailants before tracking the fleeing bandits to Karaduwa village in Matazu Local Government Area of neighbouring Katsina State. 

Acting on credible intelligence, the Air Component pursued the group as they attempted to regroup after escaping Kano.

The Army said intelligence reports revealed that the bandits were in the process of burying some of their members killed during the initial clashes when they were located at Dan Marke in Matazu LGA. 

Air Component Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA reportedly trailed their movement until several motorcycles converged after crossing a dry riverbed.

“A precision airstrike was immediately launched,” the statement said, noting that the operation was supported by aerial Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions. 

The strike, according to the Army, resulted in the neutralisation of at least 23 terrorists, while several others were believed to have sustained injuries. 

It also damaged the group’s weapons and other equipment.

Reacting to the operation’s outcome, the Commander of 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, commended both the air and ground troops for their exceptional courage. 

“Their bravery and resilience in the face of adversity are commendable,” he said.

The Army added that the security situation in Kano State remains calm, with troops sustaining robust patrols and close monitoring of flashpoints. 

It stated that troop morale and operational efficiency remain “very satisfactory.”

The Nigerian Army also appealed to the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information.

Such cooperation, it said, would further aid efforts to disrupt banditry and other terrorist activities.

Major Zubairu stressed that troops, working alongside other security agencies, remain committed to safeguarding lives and property nationwide and will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure national security.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced a significant escalation in its counterterrorism operations, conducting precision airstrikes that eliminated Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters and destroyed several bandit enclaves across multiple states.

According to a statement from the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the coordinated missions targeted ISWAP terrorists in Mallam Fatori and Shuwaram, Borno State.

The operations also destroyed bandit hideouts in Garin Dandi and Chigogo, Kwara State, as well as Zango Hill in the Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The statement indicated that these strikes represent a decisive phase in the ongoing joint military operations, known as Operation HADIN KAI and Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which are aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks across Nigeria’s northern region.

The success of these missions underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s renewed operational tempo, following directives from the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke.

Each mission reaffirms the NAF’s commitment to deploying smarter, intelligence-driven airpower to neutralize insurgents and criminals, thereby protecting the lives and property of citizens and enhancing national security.

The Nigerian Air Force has announced the commencement of applications for its Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) 34/2025.

The announcement was made via the NAF’s official X handle (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday, invites applications across a wide range of professions, including engineering, medical, and cyber specialities, reflecting the force’s evolving needs in modern warfare.

Interested candidates can apply for free online from August 27 to October 7, 2025, through the official NAF recruitment portal: https://nafrecruitment.airforce.mil.ng.

According to NAF, candidates must possess the following requirements to qualify:

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens by birth.

Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 32 years; Medical Doctors (consultants) could be between the ages of 25 and 40 years at the time of application.

The exercise is not for serving personnel desiring Branch Commission. Therefore, personnel above 32 years of age are not to apply.

A serving personnel must be recommended by his/her Commanding Officer/Commander, must have served for 10 years and attained the rank of Cpl.Applicants must not be less than 1.66 m tall for males and not less than 1.63 m tall for females.

The announcement further revealed that, applicants must be free of any previous conviction(s) on criminal grounds by a court of law.

The Force added that applicants must be medically, physically and psychologically fit and must meet the Nigerian Air Force medical and employment standards.

Interested applicants must possess a minimum of Second Class Upper Division and Upper credit for HND holders and must possess a NYSC Discharge Certificate or Letter of Exemption.

The Zonal General Aptitude Test will hold on a date to be revealed on the NAF Recruitment Portal. Only successful applicants will be invited for the Selection Interview, the statement concluded.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has said that its fighter jets carried out a series of precision airstrikes on June 5 and 6, 2025, as part of Operation Hadin Kai, neutralising Boko Haram strongholds in Tumbumma Baba and Chiralia, Southern Tumbuns area of Borno State.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, disclosed that the strikes were based on credible intelligence that the terrorists were using the structures for storage and coordination of planned attacks.

He said the airstrikes successfully destroyed the hideouts, preventing the terrorists from launching assaults aimed at disrupting Eid celebrations.

“Battle Damage Assessments confirmed the neutralisation of several terrorists and the destruction of key logistics structures,” Ejodame stated.

He added that this pre-emptive strike demonstrated the Air Force’s unwavering commitment to protecting civilian lives and bolstering national security.

The Nigerian Air Force has said that, operatives in Katsina State have destroyed notorious criminal hideouts in Unguwar Goga Hillforest, Ruwan Godiya Ward, the Faskari Local Government Area of the state.

The operation, done by the Air Component of Operation Fansan Yamma in the early hours of Thursday, centered on cracking down the fortified camps of two notorious bandit kingpins, Gero (Alhaji) and Alhaji Riga.

In astatement on Friday night by the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, said the airstrikes successfully neutralised over 20 bandits, with additional casualties reported in the surrounding rocky hills.

The statement in part read, “The Nigerian Air Force has delivered a devastating blow to banditry in Katsina State, as the Air Component of Area.

“The airstrikes, which preceded careful and actionable intelligence advancing purposeful lethality, destroyed the fortified camps of notorious bandit kingpins, Gero (Alhaji) and Alhaji Riga, neutralising over 20 criminals, with additional casualties reported in the surrounding rocky hills.

“The action by the operatives had a decisive impact on the criminals, assessment of the full extent of the damage is ongoing.”

Ali said Riga and Gero were key perpetrators of banditry in the region, providing shelter and all household items for terrorist elements responsible for deadly ambushes along the Funtua-Gusau Road, particularly between Yankara and Sheme villages.

He added that their elimination is seen as a major victory in the ongoing military battles to restore peace in the North-West region.

Fifteen individuals, identified as members of local vigilante groups, lost their lives on Saturday due to an accidental military airstrike in Tungar Kara and surrounding villages in Maradun and Zurmi Local Government Areas of Zamfara State. 

The Daily Reality reports that over 30 others sustained injuries in the incident.  

Residents disclosed that the tragedy occurred after successfully repelling bandits in two separate attacks. 

According to Musa, a resident of Jan-Bako, bandits had invaded the villages on Friday but were driven away by armed locals. 

“On Saturday, the bandits regrouped and returned, but we fought back and chased them out again,” Musa explained.  

While villagers stationed themselves on nearby hills to monitor any potential return of the bandits, a military jet reportedly mistook them for criminals. It launched an attack, resulting in civilian casualties.  

Muhammad Aminu, another local, lamented the tragedy, saying, “After chasing away the bandits, a military fighter jet bombed our people. It is devastating and deeply regrettable.”  

A police officer in Maradun LGA confirmed that most victims were vigilantes and members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards (CPG) who had been pursuing the fleeing bandits. 

“Their outfits might have led to the mistaken identification as bandits,” the officer added.  

The Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, extended his condolences to the victims’ families in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris. 

While commending the military’s efforts against banditry, the governor described the incident as an unfortunate error. 

“We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and will support their families,” the statement read.  

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) confirmed it had carried out airstrikes targeting bandits in the area. 

In a separate statement, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, said top bandit commanders were neutralized during the operation. 

However, the statement did not directly address the civilian casualties, noting that precision targeting and real-time intelligence were used during the strikes.  

Despite successes reported by the NAF in degrading bandit networks, locals expressed frustration over recurring civilian deaths in military operations. 

This incident brings the total number of deaths from accidental military airstrikes in Nigeria over the past 11 years to 465, according to data compiled by Daily Trust.  

Residents have called for enhanced intelligence-gathering to prevent further loss of civilian lives in the fight against banditry.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it will conduct a thorough investigation into the raining of airstrikes on two villages in Sokoto on Wednesday.

According to the community members, the incident, which happened around 7am at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area (LGA), resulted in the loss of 10 civilians and left many other people injured.

Animals were also reportedly killed, with the communities saying some of their houses were destroyed by the impact of the airstrikes.

The residents said the fighter jet was targeting Lakurawa terrorists in the areas, but in the process, dropped explosives on some innocent people.

However, in a statement, the joint media coordinator for the operation, Abubakar Abdullahi, said the airstrikes targeted locations confirmed to be the base of the Lakurawa terrorist group.

He said that, all military operations are based on “thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions” to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.

On the other hand the NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, while reacting on the issue insisted that the airstrikes were carried out based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance.

He, however, assured that reports of civilian casualties would be thoroughly investigated.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced the successful elimination of several bandits during airstrikes in Babban Kauye village, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, on November 15.  

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, disclosed that the operation, under the framework of Operation Fansan Yamma, targeted a large assembly of bandits in the area. 

The airstrikes, part of Operation Farautar Mujiya, were aimed at degrading the operational capabilities of notorious bandit factions in Northwestern Nigeria.  

Akinboyewa noted that intelligence reports had revealed the bandits were planning coordinated attacks on military personnel and civilians in the Tsafe axis. 

Acting on this information, NAF executed a series of airstrikes, resulting in significant casualties among the bandits, including key loyalists of infamous leaders Dan-Isuhu and Dogo Sule.  

“Reports from the ground confirmed the successful elimination of numerous high-ranking members of these groups, delivering a severe blow to their operations,” he said.  

Tsafe Local Government Area has long been a hotspot for bandit activities, with Babban Kauye serving as a strategic safe haven for their operations. 

The recent airstrikes are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle bandit networks and restore peace to the region.  

Air Commodore Akinboyewa reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to eliminate threats posed by bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements across the country.  

The air component of Operation Fansan Yamma continues to intensify efforts to secure the Northwest and ensure the safety of its residents.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched a series of airstrikes against illegal refining sites and boats in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo states, destroying 13 sites and 7 boats. 

According to NAF spokesperson, AVM Edward Gabkwet, the air interdictions were carried out between June 18 and June 22 as part of Operation Delta Safe. 

Gabkwet said the airstrikes also dispersed 5 J-5 buses attempting to siphon crude oil products from surface tanks. 

The NAF spokesperson described the operation as a significant success, saying: “Air strikes against economic saboteurs and oil thieves have continued to record the expected outcomes.

“This is majorly due to improved intelligence, enhanced air-to-ground coordination, and most importantly, due to NAF’s improved agility and resilience.” 

He added that the operations will be sustained until the activities of the oil thieves are reduced to the barest minimum. 

The crackdown on oil thieves is part of the Nigerian government’s efforts to combat illegal oil refining and smuggling in the Niger Delta region.

Reports coming from the north-central part of Nigeria have indicated that an aircraft belonging to the Nigeria Air Force has crashed in Nigeria State.

The aircraft was confirmed to have crashed on Monday on its way from Kaduna State to Niger State.

The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, confirmed the incident in a statement.

The statement partly reads, “A Nigerian Air Force MI-171 Helicopter on a casualty evacuation mission crashed today, August 14, 2023, at about 1:00 pm, in Chukuba Village in Niger State. The aircraft had departed Zungeru Primary School en route Kaduna but was later discovered to have crashed near Chukuba Village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.”

The Daily Reality could not independently reach a Nigerian Air Force official to get more details about the incident as of the time of filing this report.

However, reports suggest that efforts are being made to rescue survivors of the crash.
