The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Zamfara State has lamented that thousands of permanent voter cards (PVCs) are yet to be picked up by their owners in the state.

The State Residence Commissioner, Professor Saidu Babura Ahmed, said the 2023 elections would be different from others because plans have been made for a free and fair process.

He made an appeal to traditional leaders, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders to give necessary support to the Commission.

He said that the commission had made sufficient preparations in response to the inflow of internally displaced people to ensure that they would exercise their civic duties, noting that polling places will be built in locations where they would feel safer exercising their right to vote.

Reports reaching The Daily Reality have revealed that the Sokoto State Police Command has detained one Nasiru Idris of the Sabon Birni Local Government Area in possession of 101 permanent voter cards (PVCs).

The suspect was apprehended on October 10, 2022, in Sabon Birni, Police Commissioner Hussain Gumel said to reporters during a briefing.

He, according to the police commissioner, was unable to explain where he obtained the 101 PVCs, adding that, “It is envisaged that owners of these cards are not only from Sabon Birni local government but could be from other parts of the state because we could not trace the rightful owners of the PVCs.”

The CP promised that after a month, the police would hand over all of the unclaimed PVCs to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He also urged members of the public, especially those whose identification cards were lost or stolen, to visit the command headquarters and check for identification.

The New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) has started a legal duel with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for refusing to allow the party to replace Senator Ibrahim Shekarau for Kano Central Senatorial District in the 2023 general elections.

NNPP wanted to replace Shekarau with the former senator, Rufa’i Sani Hanga, after his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) some months ago.

Shekarau defected and joined PDP citing irreconciliable differences with the party’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as his reasons.

On it’s part, INEC argued that Shekarau has not officially informed the electoral body about his defection to PDP reiterating that it can not replace his name with another person.

In an interview with journalists on Wednesday, the NNPP presidential candidate Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso said: “We have conducted (fresh) primary election where we elected Rufa’i Sani Hanga, as a replacement and if INEC can do justice to us, based on the constitution, the time for the replacement of candidates is not yet over.

“We have taken the matter to court because INEC did not understand the process. The court will make them understand it.”

Kwankwaso, who wondered why INEC refused to replace Shekarau’s name with their new candidate, asked “would INEC announce Shekarau as the legally elected representative for the district if NNPP wins the senatorial seat?”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against circulating fake recruitment links on social media and some online platforms.

The commission on Wednesday said the link, ‘inecnigeria.govservice.site’, is fake and aimed to defraud unsuspecting citizens.

It also reiterated that its original links remain: pres.inecnigeria.org and inecpress-app.com/pres, respectively.

It stated that its ad hoc recruitment exercise is free of charge, and no payment of any kind is required throughout the process.

“Our attention has been drawn to a fake ad hoc recruitment link being circulated on various social media platforms, frequently visited sites and blogs with the intention to defraud unsuspecting citizens.

“We implore Nigerians to disregard the fake link and avoid falling victims of swindlers,” the notice said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has buried a staff of the commission that was killed by gunmen in Imo State.

INEC announced the burial of the deceased staff, Mr Anthony Nwokorie on Thursday, September 1, 2022 on their verified Facebook page.

The deceased, aged 35, was attached to Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State. He was killed on April 14, 2022 by gunmen at Nkwo-Ihitte while on official assignment for the commission.

“On 14th April 2022, Mr Anthony Nwokorie, a staff of INEC attached to Ihitte Uboma LGA office, was killed by unknown gunmen at Nkwo-Ihitte (Polling Unit 004) while on official duty during the just concluded Continuous Voter Registration.”

He is being buried today.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has clarified that the 2023 general election results would be transmitted electronically.

Mr Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC , disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, August 21, 2022.

Mr Okoye said the clarification becomes necessary as a result of a misunderstanding which arose from an interview.

He further stated that there will be no deviation from the manner in which the recent Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections were conducted.

The statement party reads :

“For clarity, the procedure for result transmissions remains the same as in recent Governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States. There will be no change in all future elections, including the 2023 General Election.

We wish to reassure Nigerians that the electronic transmission of result has come to stay. It adds to the credibility and the transparency of the process when citizens follow polling unit results on the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal on real-time on Election Day. There will be no change or deviation in subsequent elections.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the Northwest is leading in voter registration with the total number of 22,672,373 prospective voters.

The region is made up of seven states: Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi.

According to the INEC, a total of 96,303,016 eligible voters have registered to vote in next year’s general election.

However, Northwest was said to have trailed by the Southwest, which has 18,332,191 voters. The zone is made of the six states of Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti.

Northcentral is third with 15,680,438, followed by Southsouth with 15,299,374; Northeast, 12,820,363 and Southeast, 11,498,277.

On Sunday July 31, the INEC had closed its registration portal, bringing the exercise to a halt.

“The CVR exercise has been suspended. Access to log-in to check the status of your completed applications will soon be restored,” notice on the INEC website stated.

Nigerians who had not been able to get registered made a plea to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to prolong the Continuous Voters Registration, CVR, process as it came to an end yesterday.

In a rush to register before the deadline, which was set by the electoral authority on June 25, Nigerians flocked to many registration centres on Sunday.

In order to provide eligible Nigerians more time to apply for PVCs before the 2023 elections, INEC extended the application period from June 30 to July 31.

Many people have yet to register, despite the service being extended to churches and other locations in an effort to help with the process.

On Sunday, intended voters were furious in certain voting locations in Abuja, claiming that there were conspiracies to deny some Nigerians the right to vote.

An aggrieved PVC applicant was quoted by journalists to have said, “I think they just don’t want us to vote. Look at the people that are going to be denied the opportunity to participate in the election. What is wrong in this country?

“If you look around, you will notice that most of us here that have been here since 3 am this morning are youths. They are afraid of the revolution that is coming, and that is why they are deliberately pushing us away”.

Threatening to take their grievances to the street, he said, “we must hit the street to demand the extension of the exercise. It is our right to vote, and nobody should violate that right”.

The Kaduna State Government has declared July 27th to 29th July 2022, as a public holiday to enable citizens of the state to turn out en masse to register at the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Permanent Voter’s Card slated to end on July 31st 2022.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor (Media & Communication), Mr. Muyiwa Adekeye said the decision of the governor was aimed at ensuring that citizens of Kaduna State are not denied the opportunity to participate and vote for candidates of their choice ahead of next year’s general election.

It further stated that “the government urged all eligible residents of the State to seize the opportunity to register to vote.”

“The government requests all employers to actively support their staff to register before INEC closes voter registration on 31st July 2022.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Kano office has pasted names of governorship candidates that will participate in the forthcoming 2023 general election without the candidate of the court-backed faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The electoral umpire pasted Sadiq Wali and Yusuf Bello Danbatta as gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates of the PDP in Kano.

It can be recalled that intra-party conflicts and litigations following parallel leadership structures troubled the PDP, which led to factional primary elections in Kano.

However, a federal high court gave a favourable judgement in favour of Hon. Shehu Wada Sagagi-led faction that produced Mohammed Abacha as the governorship candidate of the party.

The other faction of the party, led by Sen. Bello Hayatu Gawarzo, who is the North-West vice chairman of the party, produced Sadiq Wali as the governorship candidate of its faction in a parallel primary.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kano, Prof. Riskuwa Shehu, had earlier told journalists in Kano that INEC recognized Mohammed Abacha as the rightful candidate having produced by the faction that was recognized by the court of law.

Reacting to the development that creates confusion in the PDP in the state, INEC Public Relations Officer in Kano, Ahmad Adam Maulud, said the commission at the Kano office submitted the results of the primaries it had monitored to the headquarters of the electoral umpire in Abuja, but they were sent the list they pasted on Friday.

“Whoever wishes to seek any clarification should contact the national body of his or her party for any information,” Maulud said.
