MS-13 members jailed for up to 1,335 years in El Salvador gang trial

By Maryam Ahmad

El Salvador’s attorney-general has announced what he described as “exemplary sentences” against 248 members of the MS-13 criminal gang, following a major trial linked to dozens of violent crimes.

The convictions covered a range of offences, including 43 homicides. One defendant was sentenced to 1,335 years in prison, while ten others were each sentenced to several hundred years.

Authorities said the case marks one of the most significant legal blows against organised crime in the country. The mass sentencing forms part of President Nayib Bukele’s ongoing crackdown on gangs, a campaign that has dramatically reshaped El Salvador’s security policies and drawn both domestic support and international scrutiny.

Government officials argue that the harsh penalties are intended to dismantle gang structures and deter future violence, as the administration continues its hardline approach to public security.

Rampant culpable homicide in Kano: A case of confusion

By Salihi Adamu Takai

The case of culpable homicide has become a daily report case in Kano State. The crime is a rampant nuisance that disturbs the whole country today. This is horrible in a state like Kano, which is the most populous state in Nigeria.

The rampancy of the crime is not only confusing but also the human, physical, and emotional proximity of the parties that are involved in the commission of the crime. The case of the rampancy of the commission of the crime is abnormal considering how it has been in records in police stations and contained in many cases of laws.

Most of the reported culpable homicides in Kano show the relationship and social proximity of the parties involved in it. The accused persons of the reported cases had proximity to the dead persons. This started – (as I have noticed it) – from the Hanifa’s case. Hanifa was kidnapped and killed by her teacher. There was a human proximity between the dead person and the accused person.

The Chinese man who killed his girlfriend had human proximity to the dead person engaged in courtship, and he eventually killed her. The recent case of Hafsa is also a case that confuses lots of people in Kano. The accused person had proximity to the dead person, and she killed him. Yesterday, it was reported that a person raped and killed his sister in Kano.

Therefore, this rampant nuisance in the report of the cases of culpable homicide in Kano is not a mere thing of crime inconsistent with the Penal Code; it’s beyond human perspectives and avoidable. What a relationship that puts people into a dilemma! Son kills his mother, and mother kills her son!!

It’s a collective responsibility of the Kano State community to engage in the proper investigation of the causes of these crimes. Islamic scholars shall always deliver sermons to admonish people on such offences, and the life of the Prophet (SAW) shall be part of the sermon so Muslims can always remain in touch with it.

By Muhammadu Sabiu

A shocking case of alleged homicide unfolded in Hamburg, Germany, as a 37-year-old man faced trial for the brutal murder of his 100-year-old grandmother.

The accused, a German native born in Estonia, appeared in court on Thursday to answer the grave charges against him.

The prosecution’s case revolves around the accused’s inability to care for his elderly grandmother, who was 100 years old and suffered from dementia.

The prosecuting lawyer emphasised this point in court, stating, “He could not cope with looking after her.” The horrifying incident took place in the early hours of March 6, when the accused reportedly launched a vicious attack on his defenceless grandmother inside her Hamburg home.

The elderly woman, struggling to fend off her assailant while sitting in a wheelchair, endured a harrowing assault.

According to the prosecution, the victim suffered at least 16 blows to her head and neck during the violent encounter. The brutal attack resulted in her falling to the ground, sustaining a broken shoulder, and ultimately succumbing to spinal injuries.

The accused, in a chilling turn of events, took it upon himself to alert emergency services to the grisly act he had committed. When the police arrived at the scene, they discovered the lifeless body of the 100-year-old woman.

Remarkably, the man offered no resistance and surrendered himself to the authorities without incident.

As the trial unfolds in the northern German city of Hamburg, the court will delve further into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

The accused faces a charge of homicide, and the legal proceedings will determine his guilt or innocence in the murder of his own grandmother.
