Great leaders not only have vision, they also share it with others and inspire many others to create their own. Leadership is simply about understanding present problems as they affect the future and taking concrete steps to solve the problems in such a way that the future will be better and brighter. And in the annals of Nigeria, many visionary leaders, who Nigerians are still enjoying from the fruits of their visionary leadership, have come and gone. Talk about Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nnamdi Azikwe, Ahmadu Bello, Obafemi Awolowo, Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Michael Okpara, J. S. Tarka, Sir Kashim Ibrahim and a host of their contemporaries, they are remembered for their struggle for Nigeria’s independence as well as laying the country’s foundation in its journey to nationhood.

After them, many others have followed their foot steps. In the cause of time, Nigeria has had leaders whose footprints on the sands of time are indelible. The late Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed and the late Umaru Musa Yaradua are, respectively, remembered for both their anti-corruption posture and drive for national unity. In the same vein, Mallam Isa Yuguda, an economic czar, Nigeria’s former minister of transport and aviation respectively, and erstwhile Bauchi state governor, is celebrated for making immense contributions in the development of Nigeria’s banking sector, transforming the nation’s transport and aviation sectors as well as raising Bauchi state to a higher threshold of development.

Last Saturday, 16th December, 2023, in its maiden combined convocation ceremony, the Sa’adu Zungur University, Gadau, Bauchi state, awarded Mallam Isa Yuguda an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Management. At the ceremony, 7,543 graduates from six academic sessions were presented for the award of graduate and postgraduate degrees. At this juncture, it’s instructive to note that the point of interest is not that Isa Yuguda received an award or that the university has thus far graduated more than seven thousand students. Rather, what is most fascinating is the fact that Mallam Isa Yuguda established the University back in 2010 when he held sway as Bauchi state governor. Thus, through his visionary leadership, the erstwhile governor established what has become a prestigious center of excellence in learning.

At the time the University was established, there was the problem of many Bauchi state indigenous students not being able to gain admission into federal universities largely because of quota system and distance, especially for female students. But education is so important that at whatever cost, it must be gained. And given that one of the primary responsibilities of government is to ensure the security, safety and well-being of the citizenry through upholding law and order as well as providing healthcare services, education etcetera, the Isa Yuguda administration thought of building the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, a new Specialist Hospital and the Sa’adu Zungur University.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees at the convocation ceremony, Mallam Isa Yuguda noted that the University is a beacon of hope that will not only prepare the youth for future challenges but will also cause rapid socioeconomic development in Bauchi state. This is how visionary leaders shape the future of a nation. Mallam Isa Yuguda’s visionary approach in leadership is an example to present and future leaders and his Honourary Doctorate award by the Sa’adu Zungur University is a testament to his remarkable impact on education in not only Bauchi state in particular but also the entire nation in general.

The Appeal Court in Abuja has confirmed Governor Bala Mohammed’s win in the March 18 Bauchi State governorship election.

The unanimous decision dismissed the appeal filed by APC candidate Sadique Abubakar, who failed to provide substantial evidence to nullify the election. 

The appellant’s claim of improperly filled forms and booklets lacked specificity on polling units and failed to demonstrate the impact on election results. 

The court questioned the credibility of witnesses, emphasizing their inability to establish a clear understanding of the contested forms.

Bauchi State was rocked by a disturbing incident as a suspect, Yohanna Abubakar, 35, lost his life during an interrogation by members of a quasi-security outfit.

The suspect was allegedly subjected to excessive beatings in an attempt to force a confession regarding the accusations against him. 

Bauchi State Police confirmed the incident, revealing that the quasi-security members, posing as professional hunters, apprehended Abubakar along with two others from Waya village.

The interrogation turned fatal, raising concerns about the methods employed during such questioning. 

Authorities are conducting investigations into this tragic incident, highlighting the need for proper training and oversight within security organisations to prevent such occurrences.

The Bauchi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has upheld Governor Bala Mohammed’s victory in the hotly contested March 18th election. 

The tribunal, chaired by Justice P.T. Kwahar, dismissed the petition by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, citing no substantial grounds for nullification. 

Justice Kwahar emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law and democratic processes.

Governor Bala Mohammed expressed gratitude to the people and called for unity, while APC representatives acknowledged the rule of law and hinted at exploring other legal options. 

This verdict solidifies Governor Bala Mohammed’s mandate and keeps Bauchi State under his leadership.

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly stealing over 20 motorcycles in the state.

The man, identified as Bello Mohammed alias Faruk Manja, is a resident of Bakaro Area of Bauchi metropolis.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi state command, Ahmed Wakil, stated this in a statement he made available to journalists in the state.

Wakili said the other suspect, Kabiru Danfulani, conspiring with Manja in carrying out that nefarious acts for over four years were at large.

He added that the suspect confessed during interrogation that he and his partner (Danfulani) have stolen over 20 motorcycles over the period.

The statement read, “The Command has arrested a two-man squad that specializes in snatching motorcycles and has been carrying out their nefarious activities for about four years within Bauchi and other neighbouring States.

“On August 24, 2023, at about 6.30 am, one Aliyu Muhammad Gidado, male, of old Airport Road GRA, Bauchi, reported at B’ Divisional Police Headquarters, Bauchi metropolis, that on the same date at about 4 am, he discovered that Bello Mohammed alias Faruk Manja, male (30) of Bakaro area of Bauchi and Kabiru Danfulani, a male of Muda Lawal Bauchi, now at large, criminally conspired among themselves and trespassed into his house and stole his motor-vehicle Honda Civic, golden colour with reg no. MSA-350-PD valued at N640,000;00, alongside a skeletal motorcycle green colour, with the value yet to be ascertained.

“On receipt of the report, a team of detectives led by the DPO B’ Division, CSP Holman Simon, swiftly swung into action and circulated the incident to various Police patrol teams/divisions within and outside the State.

“Subsequently, in their process to escape with the stolen vehicle along Maiduguri-Bauchi road, Police operatives drafted to Soro Division led by the DPO, Soro Division, SP Aliyu Goni, intercepted the motor vehicle and arrested one of the culprits.

“During interrogation, the first suspect voluntarily confessed to having been a motorcycle snatcher for about four years and approximately stole 20 Jincheng robber motorcycles and carried such menace in different areas of Bauchi and Yobe States respectively, while the second suspect is now at large.”

Wakil added that the stolen vehicle and the skeletal motorcycle have been recovered from the suspects and further investigation is in progress.

A 15-year-old Adamu Ibrahim has been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command for amputating the hand of a farmer in Jital village in the state.

SP Ahmed Wakil, the Spokesman of the Command, disclosed this Saturday in a statement he made available to journalists in the Bauchi.

He stated that the suspect was arrested for causing grievous hurt and mischief along Gombe road in Bauchi State.

According to Wakil, “A disagreement ensued in the course of which the suspect stabbed the victim upon asking him to vacate his farmland.

“In addition, the suspect drew his machete and chopped off the left hand of the victim.“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had on several occasions trespassed into the victim’s farmland with his cows while rearing,” he said.

The Police Spokesman explained that the unfortunate incident followed a series of complaints to the suspect’s father by the victim for intrusion into his rice farmland by the suspect.

“The investigation revealed that on the 24th of August, 2023, the suspect who was armed with a stick and machete, again went to the victim’s farmland and destroyed crops, whose value is yet to be ascertained.

“The victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for medical attention and he is responding to treatment,” he said.

The Police Command in Bauchi has apprehended 24-year-old Furera Abubakar in connection with the alleged murder of her four-day-old stepchild in Bantu village in the state’s Ningi Local Government Area. 

On Tuesday in Bauchi, SP Ahmed Wakil, the command’s spokesman, made a statement that confirmed the incident. He revealed that they had detained the suspect in connection with an alleged case of culpable homicide. 

“The incident was reported to the Ningi Divisional Police headquarters on the 19th of August, 2023 which revealed that the four-day-old baby was born on the 15th of August, 2023 and was murdered by the suspect (Furera) on the 19th of August, 2023 before the naming ceremony. 

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a co-wife to the nursing mother (deceased mother). 

“The suspect entered her co-wife’s room with liquid insecticide and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord. 

“The liquid suspected to be corrosive substance led to the deterioration of the baby’s health and eventual death,” he said. 

He added that the suspect would be charged in court once the investigation is completed.

In preparation ahead for the 11 March 2023 gubernatorial and state House of Assemblies elections and to show their happiness over the victory of Hon. The feast, which took place at the Magama Gumau Central Primary School, was organised under the leadership of Comrade Ahmad Haruna Bamaiyi to celebrate the emerging candidates on their victory as well as pray for them to deliver on their campaign promises.

Bamaiyi said a cow worth N600,000 to enjoy the moment, and the elected representatives were reminded to deliver on their campaign promises, adding that people from different locations were called to enjoy the moment irrespective of religion, ethnicity and political backgrounds.

Highlighting the significance of the feast, comrade Bamaiyi said the victory is from Allah and the massive support offered by the electorates, and therefore, it is good to gather together to eat, drink and thank God the Almighty for the victory of the candidates.

Bamaiyi also called on the attendants to come out en-mass on 11 march 2023 to complete the remaining task waiting for them by voting massively for Air Vice-Marshal Sadiq Baba Abubakar as Bauchi state governor and Hon. Tukur Ibrahim as the lawmaker representing Toro/Jama’a at the State Hous of Assembly.

The feast had in attendance some special dignitaries, among which include; Bashir Musa, the Sarkin Sudan of Toro, Haruna Gidado Tilde, APC local government women leader, youths and women associations, among many others.

The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to come to the rescue of Darazo community in Bauchi State affected by a devastating flood a few days ago.

The Daily Reality gathered that the devastating flood disaster destroyed more than 200 houses, farmlands and other sources of livelihood.

The lawmakers made the call through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and other relevant agencies.

However, reports disclosed that this was coming Wednesday at the plenary after the adoption and passage of a motion moved by the member representing Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency, Mansur Manu Soro.

Soro expressed deep concern over what happened in the community that the flood had displaced thousands of citizens.

Therefore, The House has called on the NEMA to provide support to the victims and to also engage the Bauchi State Government with a view to resettling those who were displaced by the flood disaster.

Communication is one of the fundamental means people command, caution and interact with one another. It is as old as human beings because the first created beings (Adam and Eve) communicated. Primitive generations used so many ways in sending signals or messages to other people. They include beating metal gongs, lighting fires on hills, blowing flutes, beating local drums, firing Dane-guns, intense ululations, especially during marriage ceremonies, etc. Moreover, communication passed through generations. More advanced platforms and channels are created to enable people to interact with fellows in far and near places with ease from their comfort zones. 

Every day, sophisticated communication gadgets are invented and taken to markets. The more advanced features are added to social media platforms, the easier messages and information are conveyed to target audiences. According to Global Digital Overview, Facebook has 2.910 billion users, Instagram has 1.478 billion, Twitter has 436 million, TikTok has 1 billion, and WhatsApp has 2 billion active users.

With smartphones and data, people interact live through video calls, share pictures, upload movable images and audio messages, and get instant replies. Yet, despite these developments, youths in Africa and other parts of the world are so addicted to social media that some could not spend 30 minutes without logging in instead of studying for a better future, assisting parents with chores, learning skills to be independents, etc.

Regrettably, some users enjoy chatting in darkness by offing light, not knowing the brightness from phones screens harm their eyes. An eye doctor working with Makka Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, Abba Salisu Abba, explained that the pupil constricts when the light is more than what eyes can accommodate. But when the light is too low or in the darkness, the pupil dilates to search for available light. He further revealed that frequent staring at a light could result in itchy, watery, reddishness of eyes and, if nothing is done, could lead to blindness.

Some parents purchase phones, laptops, and tablets primarily to aid studies of their wards without regular supervision; it is unknown to them that most of their wards use such devices for irrelevant chatting or streaming pornographic content in late hours.

These days, young ladies in recent years shamelessly upload videos of them on TikTok dancing seductively in half-naked dressings; the act pushes some youths to rape teens, work sexually for sugar mummies or pay to satisfy themselves in brothels. Unfortunately, hours spent interacting with friends on social media platforms by students are high compared to the short time given for their studies or research; that has contributed hugely to mass failure during exams. A student from the State Polytechnic even told me that he often sacrifices his meal money to buy data primarily for chatting with friends. Sadly, many lost their lives after applying for jobs advertised on social media. They were pushed to early graves by their employers in unspecified locations. 

Shallow-minded adults and teenagers who heavily use social media platforms tend to believe whatever they come across and easily influence peers, thereby influencing them to snatch phones, kidnappings, or do other criminal acts to possess what celebrities have been bombarding them with on social media platforms. Consequently, most people in Nigeria believe that building crime-free societies is a collective responsibility, but only a few contribute in that direction. Parents no longer check the kind of postings, comments, pictures being uploaded or whatever their children are doing on social media platforms but are good at condemning others.

In summary, it is sacrosanct upon parents to be acting as watchdogs over the activities of their teenage sons and daughters on social media platforms. Parents should be collecting their devices and keeping them from them for days to know the messages coming in or people they are interacting with; this would help them determine the best decision.

Social media laws should work on all and sundry irrespective of positions, backgrounds or influences. The law should provide punishment for users sharing violent content, abuse, or false accusation to innocent individuals or groups to serve as a lesson to others. Furthermore, posting educational content on social media should be encouraged and youths doing that need to be rewarded by authorities; doing so would significantly improve students’ academic performances, thereby leading to good results.
