NBA dismisses claims on Samoa agreement, LGBTQ rights
By Uzair Adam Imam
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has refuted claims that the Samoa Agreement, signed by the Federal Government, requires Nigeria to endorse or accept LGBTQ rights.
NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, in a statement, said that the agreement does not compromise Nigeria’s sovereignty or existing laws, including the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2023.
Maikyau emphasized that the NBA would have advised against signing the agreement if it contravened Nigerian laws.
He urged stakeholders to educate the public on the agreement’s true content, countering negative narratives pushed along sensitive lines of faith, culture, and morality.
The agreement recognizes Nigeria’s existing laws and sovereignty, and the NBA calls for continued public enlightenment to counter misconceptions.
Maikyau stated, “There is no provision in the SAMOA agreement that requires Nigeria to accept or recognize LGBTQ or gay rights, either as a pre-condition for a loan of $150 Billion USD or at all.
“Instead, the agreement was expressly made subject to the local laws and the sovereignty of the contracting Nations.
“That is to say, the SAMOA agreement recognizes Nigeria’s Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2023 and the Supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
“For the avoidance of any doubt, the SAMOA agreement does not seek to compromise our existing legislations nor undermine the sovereignty of Nigeria,” he added.
Your beauty will attract a man, but it’s your character that will keep him
By Aisha M. Auyo
I asked a medical doctor a weird question. It went like this: “Dr, you have been seeing all sorts of women daily—beautiful, voluptuous, and many more. How do you know which one to love or choose as a spouse?”
His reply is the most sensible thing I read today, he said:
“Because we have been seeing a lot of them, we have seen all sorts of them, we have realised that it is not the body or the face that matters… besides, everything is almost the same… It is the brain and the heart that varies. That’s what matters most for decent guys, anyway. ”
The same applies to university lecturers. They have seen them all, fresh students every year. My Dad once told me that of all the thousand female students he taught at that time, my Mom caught his attention because of her intelligence, manners, and decency.
So my sisters…..
Work on your personality more than your physicality.
Work on your manners.
Work on your attitude.
Work on your social skills.
Work on your emotional intelligence.
Work on your neatness.
A great body can be bought; Liposuction is everywhere.
‘Kayan ciko’ are everywhere.
Fair skin can be bought, and bleaching and skin lightening are everywhere.
Fine faces can be bought; plastic surgery is everywhere.
But good manners, patience, humility, intelligence, empathy, a clean heart, etc., can never be bought. They’re priceless.
That’s what will distinguish you from the others. That is what will keep a man glued to you. That’s what will help you stay married.
Jubilation as FG announces duty-free import window for food commodities
By Sabiu Abdullahi
In a bid to address rising food inflation and alleviate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, the Federal Government has announced a 150-day duty-free import window for food commodities.
The initiative, which is part of the Presidential Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan, aims to reduce demand for forex by food importers and make food more affordable for Nigerians.
According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, the duty-free import window will be valid for commodities such as maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas.
The government will also import 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and 250,000 metric tonnes of maize, which will be supplied to small-scale processors and millers across the country.
The minister noted that the government’s decision to allow duty-free imports was necessitated by the high cost of food items in the country, which has made it difficult for many Nigerians to afford basic foodstuffs.
He attributed the high food prices to various factors, including infrastructural challenges, multiple taxes and levies, and profiteering by marketers and traders.
The government’s move has been commended by stakeholders in the agricultural sector, who noted that it would help stabilize food prices and provide relief to millions of Nigerians.
However, some experts have expressed concern that the initiative may undermine domestic agricultural production and turn Nigeria into a dumping ground for imported commodities.
The government has assured that it will collaborate with state governments to identify irrigable lands and increase land under cultivation, and will also ramp up production for the 2024/2025 farming cycle through sustained support to smallholder farmers.
Additionally, the government plans to develop a strategic engagement for youth and women in greenhouse cultivation of horticultural crops and fast-track engagements with the Nigerian Military to rapidly cultivate arable lands under the Defence Farms Scheme.

More than Khaki: The invaluable skills derive from the NYSC scheme
By Haroon Aremu
Fostering national unity and cohesion is one of the core objectives of establishing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme. Grouping with other prospective corps members en route to the camp is a simple act that highlights the spirit of togetherness and brotherhood that the NYSC scheme promotes.
During the Man O’ War drills, we delved into the essence of leadership. Practical lessons taught us that as leaders, we must make wise decisions, stay steadfast, dedicated, and remain disciplined. Initially, people may rally around you, but when challenges arise, you might find yourself alone, tasked with solving problems independently. Good leaders are always alert, willing to learn and unlearn, and possess strong listening skills. They understand the importance of carrying people along when necessary. These are invaluable lessons that stay with you, and for those who have gone through this, the memories and practical examples serve as lifelong guides.
Another enriching aspect of NYSC is the opportunity to make friends from various tribes and states, including those who studied abroad. The camp environment is a melting pot of cultures and ideas, providing ample networking opportunities. Whether you seek fruitful relationships, financial growth, or career advancement, the connections you make at camp can be pivotal in your next life phase.
While camp life can sometimes be stressful, it is equally interesting and filled with numerous advantages crucial for our future. The experience fosters personal development and resilience, equipping you with skills and insights invaluable in your professional and personal life.
Participation in the NYSC is mandatory for all Nigerian graduates, whether you studied within or outside Nigeria, provided a person does not reach 30 years of age at graduation. The implications of not serving your nation may have ripple effects on any chosen career development. Without completing the NYSC, one cannot contest for any political office or receive political appointments.
This rule was underscored by recent events involving prominent figures such as the Minister for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, who had to complete her youth service quickly to retain her ministerial position. Similarly, former Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun faced a significant scandal for not participating in the NYSC, which ultimately led to her resignation.
The NYSC scheme allows graduates to contribute to reducing the flames of tribalism and nepotism, fostering peaceful coexistence and good neighbourliness. The program cultivates a sense of love and unity, reinforcing that we are all one Nigeria.
The NYSC experience is a transformative journey that every Nigerian graduate should embark on. It prepares you for the future by instilling leadership skills and fostering valuable connections, but it also plays a crucial role in national unity and development. Embrace the NYSC scheme and join the movement that builds a stronger, more united Nigeria.

Sokoto: Governor orders officials to return workers’ Sallah gifts
By Abdullahi Mukhtar Algasgaini
The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has ordered the Local Government and Local Government Education Authority officials to return the diverted N30,000 Sallah gifts given to workers in the state or face serious consequences.
The governor gave the warning on Friday while addressing a crowd of well-wishers and supporters at the Government House in Sokoto following a successful Hajj exercise.
He expressed dismay over the nefarious attitude of some finance officers, especially at the local government level, who denied its staff the ₦ 30,000 approved as Sallah gifts by the state government.
“I wonder how somebody would deny our workers the stipends we gave them in order to make them financially stable during the Sallah festive season.
“Those who diverted those funds must return them immediately, or else we will take serious punitive measures against them.
“We will ensure that the culprits reap what they sowed to serve as a deterrent to others,” he warned.
The governor further charged all heads of agencies where such corrupt tendencies were perpetrated to hasten the compilation of all the affected workers and ensure they were refunded.
He also assured the people of the state of his administration’s determination to ensure accountability, transparency, and the prudent management of public funds for the common good.
“This administration is all out to ensure zero-tolerance for corruption and all corrupt tendencies.
“So, if anybody thinks he can loot public funds and gets away with it, then he must be sick.
“This administration is a true reflection of the government of the people, for the people, and indeed by the people.
“So, we have a huge task ahead of us that we must carry out diligently without minding whose ox is gored,” Aliyu averred.
The governor further called on the people of the state to continue to rally around the present administration in its undying quest to deliver on its campaign promises.
He also thanked the All Progressives Congress leader in the state, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko, for his fatherly role and guidance to the present leadership in the state.
He also thanked the entire people of the state for their unflinching support and fervent prayers to the present administration and called for the sustenance of the tempo.
LGBTQ: An open letter to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf
Dear Government of Kano State, the Kano Emirate, Hisbah Board, and the Kano State Council of Ulamas
Peace be upon you,
An effort is being made to spread LGBTQ advocacy in Kano State in the name of human rights, seeking “freedom” and sustainable livelihoods for our daughters and helping orphans, the needy, and those with special needs.
This advocacy is being spread publicly without shame, disregarding your esteemed positions and influence in Kano State— in schools and neighbourhoods. Shockingly, even government officials were cornered in the name of dialogue or capacity building.
The organization behind this heinous act in our state is the Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality. They refer to themselves as “WISE.” From what we have seen on their platforms, they even have an independent office in Yankaba Kawaji, Bompai GRA, Kano.
In a statement we saw on the pages of this organization, we noted that they once organized a workshop for officials from Hisbah, KAROTA, NDLEA, and others!
If this organization has grown strong enough to gather these officials in one place under the guise of a workshop—regardless of the topic—we fear the influence they have already exerted in our state.
To verify all these, please check their Facebook page named “Wise.”
You might recall the recent uproar over the Samoa Agreement signed by the Federal Government, which is alleged to have come with strings attached, one of which is to allow advocates of LGBTQ, like WISE, to pursue their agenda freely.
This has sparked controversy in Nigeria over the past few days. We have seen how the scholars in Kano stood firm on their pulpits, as we expected, to vehemently condemn this attempt, should it prove true.
This controversy has further revealed that there are laws in our country that outright prohibit any attempt to propagate the agenda of LGBTQ. We have also found solace in the unity of Muslims and Christians in rejecting this thing we collectively see as immorality in our culture and religion.
With this, we call upon the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Chairman of Hisbah, Mallam Aminu Daurawa, and the leadership of the Kano State Council of Ulamas, to ensure that this organization, WISE, packs up and leaves our dear state and that its activities are banned by any means possible.
The people of Kano State are your trust! And God will question you about this trust on the Day of Judgment!
We’ve done our part by letting you know about this issue. We have informed you if you were unaware of this organization or its activities.

Customs, NNPC collaborate to combat fuel smuggling
By Sabiu Abdullahi
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen their partnership in the fight against fuel smuggling.
According to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, the collaboration aims to tackle the smuggling of petroleum products outside Nigeria, which constitutes a significant burden on the national economy.
Adeniyi noted that the price difference between Nigeria and neighboring countries creates a huge incentive for smuggling, but the NCS, through ‘Operation Whirlwind,’ is working to minimize the smuggling of Premium Motor Spirits (PMS).
He highlighted the successes of the operation, including fantastic seizures and the arrest of perpetrators.
The Coordinator of ‘Operation Whirlwind,’ Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, reported that the operation has recorded significant victories across the nation, including the interception of 79,000 liters of fuel in Kebbi State.
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, acknowledged the smuggling of PMS as a major national challenge and sought the Customs’ assistance in minimising the smuggling of PMS outside Nigeria.
He commended the efforts of ‘Operation Whirlwind’ and offered NNPC’s support to combat the crime. Both agencies have agreed to share intelligence and resources to enhance their capacity and motivation to tackle fuel smuggling.
The collaboration aims to create a situation room for data sharing and to ensure the prosecution of arrested perpetrators.
