The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has demanded the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over the incessant security challenge bedevilling the northwestern part of the country. 

The Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the call on Tuesday saying that Nigerians cannot continue to live and die under the dictates of bandits.

Baba-Ahmed lamented that Nigerians had shed enough tears and blood without an appropriate response from those with responsibilities to protect us.

He added that President Buhari’s administration does not appear to have answers to the challenges of security to which Nigerians are exposed. 

He stated that “We cannot continue to live and die under the dictates of killers, kidnappers, rapists and sundry criminal groups that have deprived us of our rights to live in peace and security.

“Our constitution has provisions for leaders to voluntarily step down if they are challenged by personal reasons, or they prove incapable of leading.
“It is now time for President Buhari to seriously consider that option since his leadership has proved spectacularly incapable of providing security over Nigerians. 

“Our Forum is aware of the weight of this advice, and it is also aware that we cannot continue to live under these conditions until 2023, when President Buhari’s term ends,” Baba-Ahmed said.

The Nigeria Police Force has shortlisted qualified candidates for the next stage of its 2021 recruitment of constables.

In a statement signed by the force’s acting public relations officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, applicants who attended the physical screening exercise are to check their application status on http://www.policerecruitment.gov.ng.

Qualified candidates are urged to print their slips for the Computer-Based Test (CBT) scheduled to hold on April 20 and 21, 2022, at designated centres nationwide.

On his part, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, maintains that “the recruitment is absolutely free”, adding that applicants should be wary of criminal elements who might want to dupe them. He urges candidates to channel their complaints through 08100004507 or support@policerecruitment.gov.ng.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has declared his interest to contest for the office of the president in the 2023 presidential polls. 

The declaration that came on the morning of Monday, April 11 2022 confirmed the speculation that Osinbajo wants to succeed his principal, Muhammadu Buhari, whose tenure officially ends in May 2023.

Osinbajo, who posted his declaration on his official Twitter handle, said:

“I am today, with utmost humility, formally declaring my intention to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the platform of APC.” 

In Osinbajo’s declaration speech, he also said he could relate to the suffering and challenges of Nigerians and hence why he wants to be president. 

“I’ve stood where you stand and sat where you sit. I know, and I understand our hopes, aspirations and fears from a place of relatable proximity; and I believe that in those hopes and aspirations are the seeds for the great Nigeria that we all desire. I believe that the very reason why the Almighty God gave me these experiences, these insights, and these opportunities, is that they must be put to the use of our country and its great peoples.” He stated.

Osinbajo will jostle for the ruling party’s ticket with other political heavyweights, like APC’s chieftain, Bola Ahmad Tinubu, and Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, who also declared their intention to run for the presidency on the platform of the party.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan over the death of his two personal staff in a road accident.

A statement signed Friday by the presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, contained the commiseration. 

The President expressed gratitude to Almighty God for having the former president escape unhurt from the accident.

However, he also advised Jonathan not to be distracted from his frequent local and international travels. 

Reports disclosed how the former president’s convoy was involved in an accident in the vicinity of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The accident that took place Wednesday had claimed the lives of two orderlies.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has revealed that from January to date, Nigeria has lost a total of N623BN worth of crude oil to the activities of oil vandals and operators of illegal refineries.

Reports indicate that the GMD  made the revelation when he appeared before the House of Representative committee on petroleum (upstream) that invited him to ascertain the cause of Nigeria’s low crude oil output.

Kyari said oil thieves steal an average of 250,000 barrels per day. This situation has limited Nigeria’s crude oil output to only 1.49 million barrels per day, against its OPEC quota of 1.753 million barrels per day.

“What is going on has nothing to do with the PIA. It is purely an act of thieves; acts of vandals which have rendered the industry unworkable and taken us to the level where today, our production is around 1.49 million barrels per day.”

“When you lose about 200,000 barrels per day, even at an average price of 65 dollars per barrel, we lost close to 1 billion dollars between January and March. 

“From January to date, we lost an average of 250,000 barrels per day, and at the current price of about 100 dollars to the barrel, even within this short period, we have lost close to 1.5 billion dollars.

“This situation deteriorated to the extent that by March 7, 2022, it came to zero, and so, we shut down the line and declared force majeure. Even on our most reliable pipeline, which is the Forcados pipeline, we still lose about 7000 barrels per day. Needless to say that this is all coming as a result of the acts of vandals and oil thieves,” he said.

However, the GMB assured the lawmakers that massive joint security operations among agencies were ongoing to address the situation.

Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has advised corps members to try and stop nighttime travel to minimize the risk of being involved in car accidents.

In their Places of Primary Assignment, PPA, corps members should avoid social vices such as drug misuse, human trafficking, cybercrime, and advanced fee fraud, he noted.

During the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch “A” Stream 2 Corps Members at NYSC Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai on Thursday, Ibrahim, who was represented by the Akwa Ibom Coordinator, Mrs Chinyere Ekwe, issued the charge.

The DG advised corps members to spend the night at military barracks or any other officially protected site if their journey lasted longer than 6 pm.

He was quoted as saying, “to greatly minimize the risk of road traffic accidents, you are expected to always cut short your trips from 6 pm in the evening and pass the night at military barracks and other locations officially designated as safe.”

Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, warned on Tuesday that Nigeria is bleeding due to the recent wave of killings.

The All Progressives Congress’s National Leader asked everyone to join hands in the fight against banditry.

This comes as Governor Nasir el-Rufai stated that Nigeria is at a fork in the road and that the country must make a difficult decision by 2023 on who will lead the country out of its various problems.

Tinubu, who was in Kaduna for a condolence visit following the terrorist attack on a Kaduna-bound train from Abuja on March 28, donated N50 million to help the state government repair and care for the victims.

“We are facing the current challenges seriously, and we have to do more. Nigeria bleeds on behalf of everybody.

“We need to fight terrorism with all our energy and whatever we have. It’s not shameful for people to be poor, but it’s unacceptable to accept poverty as a norm.

“It’s shameful to be callous, wicked and be a bully or terror to instil fear in humanity, and it’s not acceptable,” Mr Tinubu was quoted as saying.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked Nigerians to hold the Ministry of Communication and Nigerian Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) responsible for the lingering impasse between ASUU and the Federal Government.

ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Buchi Zone, Professor Lawan Abubakar, briefed reporters on Monday, March 4, 2022, in Jos, where he alleged NITDA is misleading Nigerians on the credibility and acceptability of UTAS which he said has passed the integrity test. 

“Ironically, NITDA, in conjunction with its parent Ministry (The Ministry of Communications where Pantami is minister), is seriously sabotaging the government at resolving the impasse. This is obviously capable of prolonging the current strike, thereby bringing untold hardship on Nigerian University students and the University System.” Prof. Abubakar stated

He further explained that NITDA, who scored UTAS high in the past, can not suddenly say UTAS failed integrity test. 

“After scoring UTAS this high, NITDA went further to contradict itself by making a fallacious statement that UTAS has failed integrity tests. The union wonders how a score of 97.4% will amount to failure.

“The Union still agreed to another Test by NITDA on March 8, 2022, in the presence of observers front the Federal Ministry of Education/National Universities Commission (NUC), Federal Ministry of Finance/OAGF, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.

“This most recent test still scored UTAS 99.3% in all the Tests metrics. ASUU is Therefore surprised that NITDA, having scored UTAS this high on two different occasions, unpatriotically went to the press to deliberately mislead the public into believing that UTAS has failed Integrity tests again.” Prof Abubakar clearly explained.

Therefore, he called on Nigerians and the Federal Government to call the Ministry of Communications and NITDA to order to resolve the labour crisis.

The Jack Rich Northern Front has distributed Ramadam items comprising rice, sugar, and millet, among others, to widows, orphans and the less privileged in Kaduna state. The distribution took place at the Kawo LEA primary school premises with the beneficiaries in attendance.

Speaking at the event, the Front coordinator, Dr Ibrahim Abdulkareem, said the initiative was necessitated by the neglect and abandonment being suffered by widows, orphans and the less privileged in society, especially during the month of Ramadan.

 One of the beneficiaries, a mother of three who lost her husband two years ago, Malama Halima Mukhtar, expressed gratitude for the gesture and called on well-meaning people to pray for the success of the Fronts’s activities.

The organization has given similar assistance as its Ramadan welfare package to other orphans across some states in northern Nigeria.

On Saturday, the Ogun State Police Command announced the arrest of Sikiru Ibrahim, a 27-year-old man who hacked his father to death after rousing him up from his sleep.

The incident began when the deceased, Mumuni Ibrahim, a guard, got home from work on Wednesday morning and discovered his son asleep.

Ibrahim is claimed to have awoken his kid and questioned him about why he was still in bed at such a late hour.

Sikiru, a suspected cultist, was claimed to have attacked his father with a cutlass, enraged at his father’s actions.

Ibrahim was believed to have died on Thursday while receiving treatment at a medical hospital for injuries sustained in the attack.

DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, said the culprit was apprehended after one Abiodun Sunday, described as the deceased’s neighbour, filed a report at the Onipanu Divisional Headquarters.

Mr Opeyemi was quoted as saying, “The neighbour reported that the deceased, Mumuni Ibrahim, a guard, returned home and met his son who was still sleeping, and when he asked him why he was still sleeping at that time of the day, the suspect got annoyed and brought out a cutlass with which he attacked the victim.

“Upon the report, the DPO Onipanu Division, CSP Bamidele Job, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the scene where the suspect was arrested, and the victim rushed to a general hospital for treatment. The suspect, who is strongly suspected to be a cultist, has no reasonable explanation for his action when interrogated.”
