Kano police arrest thugs plotting to disrupt Daushe Durbar

The Kano State Police Command revealed on Thursday their discovery of alleged schemes orchestrated by certain “political thugs and enemies of the state” aiming to disrupt the recently conducted Hawan Daushe Durbar Celebration, on April 11, 2024, at the revered Emir’s Palace in Kofar Kudu, Kano. 

SP Abdullahi Haruna, spokesperson for the Kano police, conveyed this development in a formal statement issued on Thursday. 

“Joint security forces operating within the state are cognizant of these malevolent intentions and have initiated comprehensive measures to ensure the peaceful conduct of the Durbar festivities, along with guaranteeing the safety of all residents. 

“This includes the strategic deployment of personnel and resources across key areas of the state,” Haruna said. 

He sternly warned, “The Kano State Police Command unequivocally states that anyone, regardless of affiliation, who attempts to disrupt the prevailing peace in the state will face arrest and the full force of legal consequences. Moreover, their backers will be identified and held accountable accordingly.” 

He added, “The Sallah Durbar is a cultural event, not a political forum. The exhibition of political paraphernalia, such as banners and posters, is construed as a distortion and could potentially incite disorder.” 

Politicians received counsel to “urge their supporters to perceive Sallah as a celebration of unity and heritage,” Haruna added. 

Furthermore, he disclosed, “During the Hawan Eid Sallah Day, a total of 54 suspected thugs were apprehended, and a cache of hazardous weapons and narcotics was confiscated from them. These suspects will undergo due legal process.” 

Haruna also solicited, “It is imperative for the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station.” 

The Kano State Police Command reiterated their commitment to fostering collaboration and cooperation among all stakeholders to collectively fortify the region’s security framework and create a safer environment for all.

Employment scam in Gombe lands fraudsters into prison

In a recent verdict, the Gombe State High Court delivered justice to perpetrators of employment scams, sending a strong message against fraud.

Ibrahim Abdullahi and Umar Usman found themselves on the wrong side of the law, charged with obtaining N682,847 under false pretenses.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed that Abdullahi and Usman, separately arraigned, faced charges related to cheating and employment scams.

Abdullahi was accused of obtaining the Polaris ATM card of Aminu Adamu Idris and Muhammed Saidu Jibril under false employment promises, subsequently misusing it to secure a loan without consent.

Both defendants pleaded guilty upon arraignment. The prosecuting attorney, A.B. Kware, urged the court to consider appropriate sentencing, while the defendants’ attorney, R.A. Anthony, appealed for leniency, citing their regret and first-time offender status.

Judge Kereng, after finding them guilty, sentenced Abdullahi and Usman to one and two years in jail, respectively, alongside a N50,000 fine each.

In another case, Mohammed Soja faced six years imprisonment for similar fraud charges but was offered a chance for rehabilitation due to his father’s medical condition, with an option of a N150,000 fine.

Previously, Alhaji Abdullahi Usman received a 10-year sentence for obtaining goods under false pretenses.

The EFCC had arraigned Usman on one count in 2018 after he deceived a store owner in Gombe.

These verdicts underscore the judiciary’s commitment to combating fraud and protecting citizens from exploitation.

They serve as a reminder of the importance of due diligence in financial transactions and employment opportunities, emphasizing the need for vigilance against fraudulent schemes.

CBN staff panic as Cordoso announces waves of firings

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) employees have expressed profound apprehension as the specter of job loss looms large following the appointment of Dr. Olayemi Cardoso as Governor.

In interviews with journalists, CBN workers voiced concerns that no department within the apex bank seems immune to the ongoing wave of terminations.

This unease intensified with the recent dismissal of another 50 colleagues, bringing the tally to approximately 117 employees shown the door in just 20 days, spanning 29 different departments.

Among those affected are directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers, and lower-ranking staff.

One employee lamented, “We’ve witnessed indiscriminate layoffs in procurement, development finance, and medical services.

“This trend suggests that other departments might face the same fate soon.

“I fear they’ll target those who worked closely with the sacked directors. Such apprehension doesn’t bode well for productivity or the system.”

Another senior staff member revealed, “Many sacked individuals received their letters quietly and left their offices feeling helpless due to the systemic structure.”

Under Cardoso’s leadership, the CBN has undergone numerous changes in policies and personnel, deviating significantly from the tenure of his predecessor, Godwin Emefiele.

Even CBN vendors have voiced grievances, as some who completed contracts since last June await payment indefinitely under the new management, amidst suspicions that they might have benefited from Emefiele’s administration.

Group lambasts Governor Yusuf for alleged cover-up amidst governance failures

A political movement based in Kano, Arewa Renaissance Front (ARF), has criticized Governor Abba Yusuf for levying what they term as unfounded accusations against Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

ARF accused Yusuf of using unsubstantiated claims against the former governor as a shield to conceal his own failure in meeting the expectations of the people.

In a statement released by Aminu Gawama, the Secretary-General of ARF, the group alleged that Yusuf, along with his political mentor, former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, are engaged in a vendetta against Ganduje.

According to the statement, these allegations were merely propaganda orchestrated by state-owned entities to divert attention away from the glaring inefficiencies and lack of direction in Yusuf’s administration.

The statement further highlights the public’s growing frustration with Yusuf’s tenure, questioning his accomplishments despite the ample fiscal resources available to the state. ARF denounced the judicial commissions of inquiry initiated by Yusuf to probe Ganduje’s tenure, labeling them as biased and aimed solely at depleting state resources.

ARF also condemned Yusuf’s selective targeting of Ganduje’s administration while absolving Kwankwaso’s tenure from scrutiny, characterizing it as a futile attempt to mislead the populace.

Malam Jabir Maihula: A hero archetype

The German psychologist Carl Jung proposed archetypes as universal themes within the collective mental frameworks of humans. They represent the primary human drives, impulses, hopes, and desires that shape behaviours, perceptions, and actions. While he identified approximately seven archetypes, my interest lies in the Hero archetype, which symbolizes the relentless pursuit of excellence, growth, and overcoming challenges. I believe Malam is a living example of the Hero archetype.

Malam had a modest upbringing in Sokoto before gaining admission to major in Hadith Sciences at the Islamic University of Madina. After graduation, he furthered his studies with a postgraduate Civil and Criminal Justice diploma at the same university. Upon his return, he began teaching in Islamic schools. His breakthrough came through deputizing for his mentor, Professor Mansur, in his Sahih al Bukhari class.

Malam  as an Academic 

Malam’s primary training was conducted in Arabic. Still, due to his daring pursuit of excellence, he chose the unconventional route of pursuing a Master’s in Law at the University of East London instead of following the familiar path taken by others within his academic circle, which typically involves going to Sudan or Egypt for a Master’s in Islamic Sciences. Malam had to work on his English fluency to pave the way for a more multifaceted academic journey. His PhD journey was equally challenging, pushing the limits of his capabilities. Malam’s PhD was supervised by one of the foremost Taymiyyan scholars in Western academia, Professor Jon Hoover.

I recall calling Malam upon hearing that he had started his PhD and recommending that he look into Professor Hoover. Malam was pleasantly surprised that I knew about Hoover and informed me that Hoover was actually his supervisor. I became acquainted with Hoover through his book, Ibn Taymiyya’s Theodicy of Perpetual Optimism. In less than three years, Malam completed his PhD. He later published a portion of his research as a book titled Ibn Taymiyyah in the Literature of Contemporary Jihadists, an excellent book with a title I have reservations about, but that’s a topic for another article.

Malam’s work ethic as the Head of the Department of Islamic Studies at Sokoto State University was commendable. Despite his popularity and significant social influence, he never allowed these factors to impact his primary duties to his academic constituents negatively.

Malam as a Scholar 

Malam has mastered the social landscape in his relentless pursuit of excellence. The most important lesson from his scholarly life is to stay away from controversies and unproductive verbal spats while remaining true to one’s principles and beliefs. Although Malam is non-confrontational, it doesn’t prevent him from engaging in polarized intellectual discourse. He once wrote a booklet engaging with and critiquing a pamphlet written by one of the Sokoto scholars on a polarizing theological issue. Still, in his characteristic fashion, that discourse didn’t translate into conflict.

Apart from his scholarly rigour and eloquence, an even more impressive trait is his accessibility to all and sundry. He is not merely an ivory tower scholar buried in the dust of books, shielded from his immediate realities. Malam is a Hero archetype who is not afraid to take the road less travelled. He constantly evolves his da’wah to fit the spirit of the times while staying true to tradition.

Malam as a Public Servant 

Malam has just started his journey as a public servant and is making a significant impact with his meticulous approach to public service. I know for a fact that he had no financial incentive to take that job. It was purely out of giving back to his society. He occupies a sensitive position as the commissioner for religious affairs because of the sectarian divides but has been able to navigate those tricky waters and gain confidence across the religious divide.

A good documentary on his official Facebook page delves into his incredible accomplishments within just a hundred days in office. Still, beyond that, I am particularly interested in how he has made Almajiri Education a priority, laying a groundbreaking blueprint and even seeking international partnerships. It is an impossible challenge to overcome for so many reasons, but if there is anyone for it, it is Malam.

I have a lot more to say, but the Arabs have a saying that “the best of speech is that which is concise.” You might have noticed that I have purposefully refused to use the honorifics “Dr” or “Honorable” to describe Malam. It’s because Malam is more important than anything else. Finally, and even more importantly than positive appraisals, is prayer: May Allah guide him throughout this challenging journey of incidental public service.

Benue mourns victims of bandits attack, calls for govt action

The Benue State government solemnly laid to rest 17 victims of a recent brutal attack by armed bandits on Mbakyor community in Mbalom Council Ward, Gwer East Local Government Area.

The harrowing incident, which occurred on the night of March 7, 2024, claimed the lives of 19 individuals, including a retired Army Officer and a young boy.

With two victims already interred due to rapid decomposition from the heinous acts, the remaining 17 were honored in a mass burial ceremony.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode, delivered a poignant funeral oration, condemning the tragic spectacle and emphasizing the urgent need for community vigilance.

He advocated for the formation of vigilante groups, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

Expressing profound sadness, Governor Alia pledged relentless efforts by the government to address the security challenges plaguing the state and urged unity in combating insecurity.

In the wake of the attack, lawmaker Elias Audu criticized the perceived inefficiency of security agencies, questioning their response despite the availability of attack helicopters during the three-hour onslaught.

He commended Governor Alia’s swift actions, including the distribution of Easter aid to the bereaved families.

Prof. Vitalis Tarhule, President of the Masev Development Association, underscored the government’s duty to safeguard lives and property.

He highlighted previous attacks in 2014 and 2018, totaling 40 lives lost, and urged the establishment of a security post in Mbakyor to deter future violence by armed herdsmen.

As Benue mourned its fallen, calls echoed for proactive measures, community vigilance, and decisive government action to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the safety of its citizens.

Eid al-Fitr: President Tinubu urges national unity, dedication

In a heartfelt address marking the conclusion of Ramadan, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called upon all citizens to unite and recommit themselves to the profound task of nation-building.

Emphasizing the collective responsibility of shaping Nigeria’s future, President Tinubu likened the nation to clay, sculpted by the hands of its people.

“We are the sculptor, and Nigeria is the clay; we build it the way we desire,” he affirmed.

Speaking specifically to the Muslim community on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, President Tinubu stressed the importance of unity in action. He described the holy season as a time of “total submission to God Almighty and to His command of sacrifice and service to humankind.”

Extending his greetings to Muslims both within Nigeria and across the globe, President Tinubu offered prayers for the acceptance of their supplications and sacrifices by Almighty Allah.

Through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the president expressed his hope that the lessons, blessings, and joys of Eid al-Fitr would endure beyond the festivities, shaping the nation’s path forward.

As the nation celebrated Eid al-Fitr, President Tinubu concluded his message by extending warm wishes to all Nigerians, invoking a spirit of unity and prosperity for the nation.

Controversy swirls as Kano Governor reinstates dismissed aide, Ogan Boye

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has reappointed Yusuf Shuaibu Imam, famously known as Ogan Boye, to his former post as Special Adviser on Youth and Sports.

This decision comes amidst a flurry of eight other new appointments, which encompass a variety of key roles within the state administration.

Ogan Boye’s reinstatement comes with a controversial backdrop.

He was previously dismissed from his position alongside a Commissioner due to alleged threats directed at the Elections Petition Tribunal Judges in the State.

However, Governor Yusuf has decided to reinstate Ogan Boye and renominate the Commissioner, who was recently confirmed by the State Assembly for reappointment.

The fresh appointments, as announced by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, introduce a mix of seasoned professionals into critical positions.

Notable among these appointments are Prof. Ibrahim Magaji Barde as Special Adviser for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Dr. Abdulhamid Danladi as Special Adviser on Diaspora II, and Engr. Bello Muhammad Kiru will be the Special Adviser on Water Resources.

Dr Nura Jafar Shanono has been reassigned from his role as Special Adviser on Water Resources to become Managing Director at the Water Resources Engineering and Construction Agency (WRECA), signalling a strategic shift within the administration.

Additionally, Baba Abubakar Umar has transitioned from Special Adviser to Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board.

Rounding out the new appointments are Nasir Mansur Muhammad as the Director General of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Aminu Hamidu Bako Kofar Na’isa and Engr. Mukhtar Yusuf as Deputy Managing Directors for KNARDA and WRECA respectively.

The Governor’s spokesperson stated that these appointments take immediate effect and are part of Governor Yusuf’s commitment to ushering in a new era of progress and development for Kano State by entrusting capable individuals with key responsibilities.

Sokoto cleric challenges official Eid date, observes prayer

Sheikh Musa Lukwa, a prominent cleric based in Sokoto, made headlines on Tuesday as he led his followers in observing the Eid prayer.

This move came in defiance of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, which had declared Wednesday as the official Eid day, marking the end of the 2024 Ramadan fast.

Contrary to the NSCIA’s announcement, Sheikh Lukwa insisted that the crescent moon signaling the beginning of Shawwal, and hence Eid, was sighted in neighbouring Niger Republic on Monday.

He justified his decision to hold the Eid prayer on Tuesday by citing reports and a verified video clip from Niger Republic’s council of Ulamah authenticating the moon sighting.

According to Lukwa, adhering to the teachings of the Holy Prophet necessitated following the declaration made in Niger Republic.

Despite the NSCIA’s assertion and the earlier stance of Saudi Arabia authorities, Lukwa remained steadfast in his belief, leading prayers at his Juma’at mosque around 8:30 am.

This event underscores the ongoing debate and differing perspectives within the Muslim community regarding moon sightings and the determination of Islamic holidays.

He was qouted to have said, “If we can accept that of Saudi Arabia, why can’t we agree with that of Niger Republic which is nearer to us.

“I am not saying all Nigerian Muslims must observe their Eid prayer on Tuesday but we have no moral justification not to observe our prayer on Tuesday because the new moon was sighted by our neighbors.

“And remember there is no fasting on Sallah day, it is prohibited,” the imam stated.

Lukwa has been defying Sultan directives, accusing the monarch of forcing Muslims to accept the moon sighting of Saudi Arabia which he believes is against the tradition of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The cleric however, challenged any scholar with a contrary view to a public debate.

Palliative Tragedy: Distributions in tertiary institutions can go differently

The tragic deaths of two students and the injury of 23 more at the botched distribution of palliatives at Nasarawa State University on Friday is a disturbing addition to what has been a troubling period for undergraduates in Nigeria.

Just last Friday, nine students of Federal University Gusau regained their freedom after spending over 170 days in terrorists’ captivity. On Thursday, three medical students of Abia State University died in a road traffic accident while returning from their seniors’ induction.

Unlike these other tragedies, however, the Nasarawa stampede could have been envisaged and prevented. The successful distribution of similar palliatives at the University of Ilorin shows us how we can do things differently.

Following subsidy removal and the attendant inflation in the country, several state governments distributed palliatives—foodstuffs and stipends—to ease the economic burden on citizens. Some states like Kwara and Nasarawa recently extended the palliatives to students in their tertiary institutions.

The initial distribution of the palliatives across institutions in Nasarawa state was peaceful. A government statement released after Friday’s stampede noted that previous distributions were “a huge success.” Students got two 7.5 kg bags of rice and 5,000 naira each.

However, events leading to the stampede at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, points towards a mismanagement of crowd control by the organizers responsible for distributing the palliatives. According to media reports, the palliatives were scheduled at the university convocation square until students arrived in large numbers and disrupted the distribution.

“After our arrangement for the distribution of palliatives to the students which was to hold at the University’s convocation square, they (students) suddenly arrived at the venue in their numbers and overpowered the security,” said Yunusa Baduku, National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, in a Punch Online report.

He added that the students “broke through the gate into the Convocation square where the bags of rice was to be shared,” leading to the stampede that consumed the two students and injured many more.

Sadly, such chaos is not new. In February, the Nigerian Customs Service had to suspend its sale of seized bags of rice after seven people died at one of its centres in Yaba, Lagos. Some two years ago, 31 people died at a stampede at the King’s Assembly in Rivers state church during the distribution of palliatives to church members; seven more were injured.

Although the state governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, was quoted as calling the tragedy “a needless stampede,” the state could have prepared better for it. Distribution events, especially those intended to provide aid or relief, tend to draw large crowds, making effective crowd control essential.

In Unilorin, for instance, where students received palliatives—cartons of noodles—from the Kwara State government, distributions were such that students did not have to gather in their numbers at the arena or use vouchers.

The government sent the palliatives to the university, who distributed them to the faculties. From the faculties, they were distributed to departments, where class representatives from each level went to retrieve the packages for their class. It was as seamless as public distributions go.

I suppose the Unilorin model could help other tertiary institutions plan more effectively. The university leveraged student associations and divided the population into manageable chunks. Such divisions made it difficult for hoodlums to gatecrash, as the class reps knew their colleagues. The strategy also eased accountability.

While I admit there is a risk of student representatives appropriating the palliatives or shortchanging their colleagues, this is more manageable than asking a crowd of desperate undergraduates to gather for government handouts.

A departmental or level advisor can be mandated to coordinate the distribution, even if he has to be paid or receive palliatives, too. It is not likely that the coordinator will conspire with the student reps to loot the palliatives. In the rare event that that happens, then so be it. Nigeria students have suffered enough than to die in avoidable stampedes.
