In the last couple of weeks, Zazzau Emirate was thrown into a bewildering dilemma after the arrest of one Shehu Umar Ciroman Baraya (Emir’s servant) by the police for sodomising a minor and the arrest of Sama’ila Abubakar Rimini Tsiwa for allegedly gang-raping a would-be bride. Both incidents did not go down well with one of the oldest emirates in the country.

The reports of such an abomination, which occurred within a few days, drew condemnations within and outside the emirate. While commenting on the issue of sodomy, the emirate expressed ‘rude shock’, saying that as an institution that believes in the rule of laws, it will not allow any form of immorality to exist within its ambit.

It also appealed to the police and any other security agencies handling the matter to expedite action and ensure that the accused is prosecuted without further delay to serve as a deterrent to others.

While people are still contemplating the vast degree of damage the case of sodomy would bring to the palace following associating the culprit with the revered institution, another one struck. And it’s the most disgusting and disturbing.

Traditional institutions are the custodian of the people’s norms, values, and traditions. As such, people with questionable characters should not be allowed to associate closely with them because their immoral attitudes will tarnish their image and jeopardise their hard-earned values and norms. Therefore, the prompt action of the Zazzau emirate for the immediate dismissal of the randy palace guard and condemning the heinous act of homosexuality is commendable as it would serve as a deterrent to others.

Sexual exploitation in whatever forms are unacceptable. For these rapists to use their positions to obtain sexual favours from vulnerable victims is callous, and it, therefore, stands condemned. Given the current happenings and the rate at which cases of rape are being reported almost daily in our society, the lack of provision of a coherent and vibrant system that will deal ruthlessly with perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to others has aided its escalation.

While noting that the suspects were reportedly prosecuted and currently languishing in prison custody awaiting trials and judgement, I call on the Kaduna state government and other stakeholders not to relent. Instead, you should ensure that the cases are thoroughly investigated and that justice is served accordingly.

Zazzau Emirate Council has debunked the rumours that a title holder of the Emirate was arrested on the ground of sodomy.

Spokeperson of the Emirate, Malam Abdullahi Aliyu Kwarbai, in a statement issued on Thursday, said the suspect is not a title holder of the Zazzau Emirate but one of the Emir’s servant.

According to him, Shehu Umar Ciroman Baraya, who was accused and arrested is one of the Emir’s servant (Bawan Sarki) and not a title holder of the Emirate as claimed.

He added that the media should always verify claims concerning the Emirate Before rushing to the press and that the misleading reports be corrected immediately.

He said: “The attention of Zazzau Emirate Council has been drawn to the News in the Media that a “TITLE HOLDER” of the Emirate has been arrested for Sodomy.

For the record, the Emirate Council would like the General Public to note that the arrested suspect (SHEHU UMAR CIROMAN BARAYA) is one of the Emir’s Servant (BAWAN SARKI) and NOT a TITLE HOLDER of the Emirate as claimed.”

The death of Emir of Zazzau Alhaji Dr Shehu Idris on 20 September 2020 has thrown hundreds of thousands of people across the length and breadth of this country into mourning. As it also provided an opportunity for princes in the four ruling houses of Zazzau Emirate to jostle for the vacant throne.

Per the law, the Zazzau Emirate Council, under the leadership of Wazirin Zazzau Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu, as the chief custodian of the tradition of the Zazzau Emirate in the absence of the emir, wrote to the Kaduna State Government notifying the governor of the demise of the emir and the vacant position created by his death.

On the third day of Fiddau prayers, the governor, while eulogizing the late monarch, said ever since the emir died, he could not sleep in the night until he took drugs, saying that the late emir used his wisdom, knowledge and experience in helping his administration.

In the selection of the emir, he openly demonstrated his neutrality as he prayed for the kingmakers to get a worthy heir to the throne that would emulate the good leadership qualities of the late emir.

Having been empowered by the law to select a new emir upon the death or deposition of an emir, the kingmakers have every right to choose any person they deem fit and worthy of the throne without prejudice against any person or group.

The law said that, and I quote, “Upon the death, resignation, or deposition of any chief or any head of chiefs other than a chief of a kind referred to in section 4, the Governor may appoint as the successor of such chief or head of chiefs any person selected on that behalf by those entitled by customary law and practice to select in accordance with customary law and practice.”

Any ulterior motive from any individual or group in this will set unprecedented hostility in a peaceful and all-accommodating emirate.

The ill decision of the government to undermine the most peaceful selection process by appointing Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli and other than the three nominees forwarded by the kingmakers has further divided the once united ruling houses, which they have enjoyed for decades as a result of intermarriage between them that produced hundreds of children.

In 2020, Wazirin Zazzau Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu, chairman of the Zazzau Kingmakers committee, was suspended by the Kaduna state government for dishonouring an informal invitation and was subsequently taken to court for allegedly violating the government’s rule.

While still in court, he was removed and replaced by Khadi Muhammad Inuwa Aminu in 2021.

In what appeared like an unending tussle last week, the removed Waziri notified both the Kaduna State Government and Zazzau Emirate of the decision to take legal action against his wrongful removal and wrongful appointment of Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli as the Emir of Zazzau.

As we await to see how the court events would unfold in what seems like there are numerous vested interests in the tussle but hiding in the shadow of Waziri, time would expose and unmask their faces.

President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, will confer a national honour on the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassdor Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, in the rank of CFR (Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic).

The appointment was contained in a letter from the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, signed by the minister, Senator George Akume.

The letter reads in part: “I have the honour to formally inform you that the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, had approved the conferment of the National Honours on you, in the rank of CFR (Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic).

Emir Bamalli succeeded late Alhaji Shehu Idris, CFR, the 18th Fulani emir of Zazzau who reigned for 45 years before his death on September 2020. Until his appointment, the monarch had served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Thailand, with concurrent accreditation to Myanmar.

He has been a permanent commissioner in the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission in 2015. He has worked in banking sector and as Executive Director and later acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Corporation.

He was a staff of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Agency before a stint as head of Human Resources at MTel, the mobile communications arm of the old Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).
