A soldier accidentally shot his comrade during a confrontation with suspected cultists in the Ibafo region of Ogun State, causing chaos.

Yahoo lads, a bunch of internet scammers, were said to have launched an attack on each other following a dispute.

One party hired cultists to attack the other, and the other hired soldiers to combat the other in a free-for-all battle.

When the cultists saw the military soldiers approaching in a private car,  they started pelting them with stones, bottles, and other things, according to one eyewitness.

This enraged the military personnel, one of whom attempted to cock his rifle, but accidentally fired his companions.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the event when contacted.

The police spokesperson was quoted as saying: “Some internet fraudsters were having issues with one another over an issue. One group invited cultists, while the other some soldiers.

“The soldiers went to the scene of the incident in a private car. They were attacked by some hoodlums said to be cultists. We learnt that one of the soldiers mistakenly fired his colleague, who had been rushed to the hospital.

“Our officers are on top of the matter and normalcy has been restored to the place.”

The police in Ogun State have arrested a 25-year-old man, Ebenezer Adeshina, for raping and intimidating a 16-year-old Facebook friend.

Adeshina allegedly invited the victim to his house, where he had intoxicated and raped her.

After having raped the girl, Adeshina also took the victim’s nude pictures and started threatening to make them public if the girl refused to give him the sum of N50,000.

The girl confided in the police that she met the guy on Facebook last year, and since then, they have been chatting with each other. 

She said because her phone got spoilt, the suspect called her with a promise to give her N30,000 for the phone’s repair.

However, no sooner had the girl arrived at his house than the suspect offered her a drugged drink which she took and became unconscious, after which the rape followed. 

The police spokesman in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said Monday that the suspect was arrested following a report by the victim at Owode Egbado Division.

The statement read in part: “After having sex with her in the state of unconsciousness, the suspect took her nude pictures and started threatening to upload them on social media if she didn’t pay him the sum of N50,000.”

The Joint Border Patrol Team, comprising Nigerian security operatives, on Thursday, April 28, 2022, handed over the duo of Ismail Ajibade and John Adewumi, a Beninoise, arrested with $285,000 (Two Hundred and Eighty-five Thousand Dollars) and CFA 18, 925,000 (Eighteen Million Nine Hundred and Twenty-five CFA) to the EFCC, for further investigation and possible prosecution. 

The suspects were arrested on April 15, 2022, by officers of the JBPT whilst on a routine patrol along the Ilashe/Ihambo axis of Ogun State. 

While handing over the suspects, A. Adamu, who led the team, said Ajibade, who is a driver, received the foreign currencies from one Taiwo Hassan in Ogun State.

Adamu added that Ajibade was on his way to convey the same to Adewumi, who had been directed to deliver the monies to one Oladimeji in the Benin Republic when they were intercepted.

On Saturday, the Ogun State Police Command announced the arrest of Sikiru Ibrahim, a 27-year-old man who hacked his father to death after rousing him up from his sleep.

The incident began when the deceased, Mumuni Ibrahim, a guard, got home from work on Wednesday morning and discovered his son asleep.

Ibrahim is claimed to have awoken his kid and questioned him about why he was still in bed at such a late hour.

Sikiru, a suspected cultist, was claimed to have attacked his father with a cutlass, enraged at his father’s actions.

Ibrahim was believed to have died on Thursday while receiving treatment at a medical hospital for injuries sustained in the attack.

DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, said the culprit was apprehended after one Abiodun Sunday, described as the deceased’s neighbour, filed a report at the Onipanu Divisional Headquarters.

Mr Opeyemi was quoted as saying, “The neighbour reported that the deceased, Mumuni Ibrahim, a guard, returned home and met his son who was still sleeping, and when he asked him why he was still sleeping at that time of the day, the suspect got annoyed and brought out a cutlass with which he attacked the victim.

“Upon the report, the DPO Onipanu Division, CSP Bamidele Job, quickly mobilised his men and moved to the scene where the suspect was arrested, and the victim rushed to a general hospital for treatment. The suspect, who is strongly suspected to be a cultist, has no reasonable explanation for his action when interrogated.”

In Ewekoro, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, a local hunter named Saheed Ogundahun is said to have slain a Fulani herdsman.

The Ogun Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, verified this on Monday while arraigning the suspect and others at the State Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Ogundahun was detained on March 13 for killing a Fulani herdsman with a Dane rifle, according to Bankole, adding that after killing the herder, the suspect buried him on his property in Ewekoro.

The dead herdsman’s body has been unearthed and sent to Ifo General Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

“on credible intelligence, one Saheed Ogundahun, a hunter, was arrested in connection with the case.

“On interrogation, the said Saheed confessed that he shot the victim to death and buried him in the bush,” the police commissioner was quoted as saying.

Police in Ogun State have detained a man named Akinyemi Thomas for impersonating a Nigerian Police Force Inspector.

The 38-year-old Thomas was apprehended on Wednesday while police officers from Sagamu divisional headquarters and the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Godwin Idehai, were on routine patrol in their area.

Under the bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan highway, cops spotted the guy in full police camouflage clothing.

On Saturday, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police, claimed that the suspect’s actions piqued the patrol team’s interest, and they stopped to question him.

Oyeyemi was quoted as saying, “Immediately the patrol vehicle stopped, the suspect took to his heels. He was then chased and apprehended.

“On interrogation, he confessed being a dismissed policeman, but using the uniform to extort unsuspecting members of the public.”

Chaos erupted in the Oke Aregba neighbourhood of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, as the locals discovered three young men burning the head of a lady alleged to be in a relationship with one of them.

Mr Segun Adewusi, the community security guard, had noticed four boys burning what presumed to be a human head in a local pot on the road in the early hours of Saturday.

According to reports, the security guard quickly contacted the police station in Adatan, who responded to the site and apprehended three lads, one of whom had left before police arrived.

According to a source who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, the slain girl, identified as Rofiat, was a resident of Idi-Ape. She was the girlfriend of one Soliu, now in police custody.

Soliu allegedly enticed Rofiat into his apartment, held her down, and requested one of his buddies to slaughter her with a knife.

“The arrested suspects were identified as 17-year-old Wariz Oladeinde from Kugba, 19-year-old Abdulgafar Lukman from Kugba and Mustakeem Balogun from Bode Olude, all in Abeokuta. Soliu was the boyfriend of the girl, he ran away but was later arrested.

“They killed Rofiat, cut her head, packed the headless body in a sack and started burning the head in a pot. They told the police in the presence of a mammoth crowd that they wanted to use it for a money ritual.

“The police have taken the body away to a mortuary,” the source said on Saturday.

According to authorities in Ogun, a 38-year-old man was arrested for reportedly stabbing his mistress’s spouse to death.

The incident occurred in the state’s Onipanu region, according to Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state’s police spokesperson, who made the announcement to journalists in Ota, Ogun, on Sunday.

Mr Oyeyemi stated that the suspect was apprehended on January 7 for allegedly stabbing Emaka Umonko, the husband of a woman with whom he was supposedly having a covert love affair.

He said the culprit was apprehended after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Onipanu Divisional Headquarters, Bamidele Job, a Chief Superintendent of Police, got a distress call.

Mr Oyeyemi claimed that the deceased confronted the suspect after accusing him of having an affair with his wife, resulting in a major brawl between the two men.

The rape and subsequent murder of two female university students in 2020, one in Benin inside the church, and the other in Ogun at her father’s house, has generated tension and condemnation from Nigerians. Even President Muhammadu Buhari followed the story, condemned the brutal acts, and commiserated with the victims’ families.

In addition, the Inspector General of Police directed an investigation into the matter through the AIG in charge of the zone. He gave him a clear mandate of apprehending and prosecuting the culprits. It was later reported that the police made some arrests related to the incidents.

Given the current happenings and the rate at which such cases are being reported almost daily in our society and the lack of provision of a coherent and vibrant system that will deal ruthlessly with perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to others has aided its escalation. In a nutshell, it seems blatant criminal acts such as this have come to stay with us due to fragile security conditions.

The unprecedented rate of sexual molestation among males and females of low and high profiles, always targeting vulnerable children, is alarming. Unfortunately, the situation in Nigeria has been more problematic because numerous cases of incest have been reported recently. The majority of the victims are minors, mainly between a few months and 12 years old.

Recently, Kaduna State High Court sitting at Dogorawa Sabon Gari, Zaria, has convicted one Usman Shehu Bashir of Dogarawa area to death by hanging for raping two years, nine-months-old girl to death. Moreover, In Jigawa, 15 people have been arrested by the police for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl for months.

Several cases of a father raping his daughter, uncle raping his niece, aunt raping her nephew, cousin raping his cousin and so on have been underreported out of the fear of stigma. However, the present reality is that children, most especially girls, are no longer safe around male folks no matter the relationship. The earlier we know this, the better.

It is time for parents/guardians to be more vigilant and watchful over their wards. However, if the father cannot be trusted, I don’t think anybody is left.
