Bandits issue threat letter, plot attacks on three Kwara communities

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Tension has gripped parts of Kwara State after suspected bandits issued a notice of planned attacks on three communities in Oyun Local Government Area.

The communities listed in the threat message are Ira, Inaja and Aho. All are located within the same local government area. The warning was contained in a letter reportedly dropped at the Ira market square and later discovered by residents.

Sources said the message was signed by a group that identified itself as the Nigeria Terrorists Association (NTA). The development has sparked fear across the affected communities. Security agencies have also stepped up readiness in response to the threat.

According to details contained in the letter, members of the group claimed they had moved from Kaiama in Kwara North Senatorial District to Oyun Local Government Area in the southern part of the state. The message warned that “they shall be coming to attack Ira town, Inaja and Aho village anytime soon.”

A security source disclosed that troops stationed at the Nigerian Army Forward Operation Base in Ilemona have intensified patrol activities across the vulnerable areas. Other security formations have also increased surveillance.

The latest alert followed a recent confrontation between security operatives and armed bandits in Share, headquarters of Ifelodun Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Sunday.

Security forces repelled the assault after about one hour of gunfire exchange. No casualty or abduction was recorded in the encounter.

SHOCKING: BH insurgents claim 176 abducted in Kwara, release video

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have circulated a video showing a large number of women and children said to have been abducted from Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The footage, which lasts one minute and 17 seconds, was published by Sahara Reporters. It shows dozens of female captives and minors assembled in an open location while an unidentified speaker questions them. The face of the speaker was not shown in the clip.

During the exchange, the speaker asked the victims, “Where were you abducted?”

They responded, “From Woro.”

He followed up with another question, “Which local government?” and they replied, “Kaiama.”

“Which state?” he pressed.

“Kwara,” the captives answered in unison.

The speaker then asked, “How many are you?” Two women answered, “176.”

After the responses, the unidentified speaker accused the Federal Government of downplaying the number of abductees.

“You can see that your infidel government lied to people that you are not more than 30,” he said.

The video ended shortly after the remark.

As at the time this report was filed, neither the Federal Government nor the Kwara State Government had confirmed the authenticity of the footage or the number of victims mentioned by the insurgents.

Security agencies have also not released any official statement in reaction to the claims.

The incident has sparked renewed anxiety over insecurity in Kwara State. The North-Central state has not been widely known as a major centre of Boko Haram operations when compared with states in the North-East.

Boko Haram’s letter to Kwara monarch promised ‘preaching and guidance’ weeks before massacre

By Sabiu Abdullahi

A handwritten letter allegedly sent by Boko Haram insurgents to the Sarkin Woro in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State has surfaced, weeks after a deadly attack that left over 170 people dead.

The message, dated January 8, 2026 (19 Rajab 1447 AH), was written in Hausa and requested a meeting with the traditional ruler or his representative before the violence occurred.

According to a publication by a Nigerian online newspaper, SaharaReporters, the terrorists presented the proposed visit as peaceful religious engagement.

Part of the letter read: “After greetings and good wishes, this message is from Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal Jihad to the Sarkin Waro. We are requesting a meeting with you personally, or alternatively with your representative.

“We wish to discuss matters with you and remind you, particularly concerning preaching and guidance among your people. This is not a threat or a declaration of war against you or your people,” they added.

Residents of Kaiama later accused authorities of ignoring repeated warnings before the massacre. Community members said they had reported suspicious movements of armed men in surrounding forests to traditional leaders, local officials, and the state government without response.

One resident said, “Before these attacks happened, our youths went to the traditional ruler many times to report that strange people were gathering inside the forest close to our villages.

“They did not only stop there. They also informed the local government council and the state government. Everybody knew, but nobody came to protect us.”

Another resident said the alerts were also sent directly to government authorities. “We reported to the state government and to the local government authorities that terrorists were around us. We begged them to deploy security operatives to clear the forests.

“They kept assuring us that something would be done, but nothing happened.”

Locals recalled that fear heightened around mid-2025 after unusual activities increased in nearby bushes. One source said, “There was a time the governor even promised that soldiers would be deployed to our area because of what we reported.

“He told some of our leaders that the Army would be sent to secure the community, but till today, no soldier came. We were abandoned.”

Survivors said the attackers later launched coordinated assaults on several villages. Casualties included men, women, and children, while homes were set ablaze. A resident stated, “What happened did not just start overnight.

“These people were around us for months. We warned the authorities. If they had listened, this massacre would not have happened.”

Another survivor described the scale of the raid. “They came in large numbers with guns. They were shouting and shooting. People were running in all directions.

“Our houses were burned. Many families were wiped out. We are still counting the dead.”

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who visited the area with service chiefs and cabinet members, condemned the killings and sympathised with affected communities. He said, “Tonight, I arrived in Kaiama in company of service chiefs and cabinet members to commiserate with His Royal Highness Alhaji Omar Mu’azu (Bagidi Kiyaru IV), the Emir of Kaiama, and the entire community on the cowardly attack launched on our compatriots in Woro and Nuku yesterday. I also visited Woro to see things for myself.”

He stated that many victims were killed after rejecting extremist teachings imposed by the attackers. However, some residents faulted the government’s response and casualty figures. One of them said, “The government failed us.”

He continued. “We did our part by reporting early. If they had deployed army when we raised alarm, these terrorists would not have stayed here to plan and kill our people.”

Another resident added, “It is so sad; the governor came here after people died and they even lied that it was only 75 people that died. Anybody that believes those who were killed were not up to 100 should come here and count the corpses themselves. The government was just doing ‘eye-service’ by crying to the media. They knew these people would attack us and they did nothing.”

Turkey condemns terrorist attack in Kwara, assures Nigeria of support

By Sabiu Abdullahi

The Republic of Türkiye has denounced the deadly terrorist assault on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, expressing grief over the casualties recorded in the incident.

In a statement released on Thursday through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Turkish government said it was “deeply saddened by the loss of lives caused by the terrorist attack that took place in Nigeria’s Kwara State.”

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack and extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to the people of Nigeria. Türkiye will continue to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja said the attackers struck after residents rejected attempts to subject them to ideological indoctrination.

In a separate statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military described the incident as a “cowardly terrorist attack.” It also conveyed sympathy to bereaved families and affected communities.

Reports indicated that more than 170 residents lost their lives during the Tuesday onslaught.

According to the DHQ, the assailants had earlier approached Woro village seeking approval to “conduct preaching and indoctrination sessions,” a request the villagers declined.

Troops were deployed to the area after security agencies received intelligence about the threat. Military patrols and surveillance operations continued for about two weeks.

“However, weeks after the troops withdrew, the cowardly terrorists returned to kill innocent citizens in protest and in a bid to terrorise inhabitants and others,” the statement said.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria commended residents of the affected communities for standing firm despite threats. It praised their refusal to abandon their beliefs and constitutional loyalty.

“The AFN mourns with the families of those who have lost loved ones in these and other similar brutal attacks on defenceless citizens defending community values and freedom across Nigeria,” the military said.

The DHQ urged Nigerians to remain resolute and resist extremist indoctrination. It warned that violent groups aim to impose “twisted beliefs through terror and intimidation.”

Citizens were also encouraged to cooperate with security agencies. The military stressed that unity and resilience remain vital in confronting terrorism.

It added that security forces, in collaboration with other agencies, have intensified efforts to identify and prosecute those behind the Kwara attack and related acts nationwide.

Amnesty International also reacted to the wave of violence. The organisation condemned what it called a troubling rise in killings and abductions across the country.

It described Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as a “Bloody Tuesday,” following coordinated assaults in several locations.

“Alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom and frequent killings across Nigeria have left people feeling more unsafe, showing utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect lives and properties,” Amnesty International had said.

The group cited attacks in Woro and Nuku in Kwara State, Doma Tafoki in Katsina State and Abande in Benue State, where many residents were reportedly killed.

The incident has drawn both local and international concern, with renewed calls for stronger security measures to curb terrorism and protect vulnerable communities.

Gunmen demand N150 million ransom for kidnapped monarch in Kwara

By Abdullahi Mukhtar Algasgaini

Suspected bandits have abducted Oba Kamilu Salami, the Ojibara of Bayagan in Kwara State’s Ifelodun Local Government Area, demanding a N150 million ransom for his release.

The monarch was seized around 9:30 am last Friday on his farm by armed men wielding AK-47 rifles.

Investigations reveal the kidnappers had been monitoring the royal father’s movements for days prior to the attack.

An anonymous family source confirmed the kidnappers made contact, issuing the hefty ransom demand to secure his freedom.

A neighbouring farmer, who witnessed the invasion but feared for his own safety, confirmed seeing the armed men whisk the Oba away on a motorcycle.

Police authorities at the Ifelodun Divisional Headquarters in Share town have acknowledged the incident.

An anonymous senior officer stated that the State Police Command has been alerted and has launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators and rescue the monarch.

Miyetti Allah demands investigation into killing of Kwara chairman

By Uzair Adam

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has called on security agencies to investigate the killing of its Kwara State Chairman, Idrissu Abubakar, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, MACBAN’s National President, Alhaji Baba Ngelzarma, through the association’s National Secretary, Malam Bello Gotomo, condemned the killing and urged authorities to ensure justice is served.

Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Police Command said Abubakar was attacked around 10 p.m. on Saturday in front of his house at Oke Ose, Ilorin East Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, stated that officers recovered five expended 7.62mm shells from the scene, and the victim’s remains were deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) mortuary.

Describing Abubakar as the youngest state chairman in the association’s history, Ngelzarma lamented that his death marked the second killing of a MACBAN chairman within two months, following the murder of Katsina State’s newly elected chairman, Alhaji Sirajo Mairana.

The deceased, aged 33, left behind two wives, six children, and his elderly mother.

According to MACBAN, Abubakar was attacked shortly after returning from Taraweeh prayers. Ngelzarma expressed concerns over the repeated killings of the association’s leaders, revealing that in the past two years, MACBAN had lost over seven state and local government chairmen to unknown gunmen.

Additionally, the group’s National Vice President, Alhaji Manir Lamido, has been missing since 2023 while traveling between Katsina and Kaduna states.

The MACBAN president urged security agencies to intensify efforts to uncover those responsible for the attacks, assuring that the association would take necessary steps to seek justice for its slain members.

Kwara man amputates neighbour’s wrist for sleeping with wife

By Muhammadu Sabiu

Oro Umaru, a resident of Ba’abete Fulani Camp in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, found himself in legal trouble as he was arraigned before a Kwara State Magistrates Court in Ilorin on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

He stands accused of attempted culpable homicide following an incident involving his neighbour, Abubakar Sanda, within the Fulani Camp.

The charges against Oro Umaru are based on an alleged altercation that took place on September 8, 2023.

According to the Police First Information Report, the case was reported by the victim’s brother, Sanda Mohammed.

The report states that Abubakar Sanda was returning from Kaiama Kara Market to his residence when he was accosted and attacked by Oro Umaru.

In the course of the altercation, Abubakar Sanda’s right wrist was severed from his hand. A police investigation revealed a troubling background to the incident.

Oro Umaru reportedly suspected Abubakar Sanda of having an affair with his wife, Fatima Oro, dating back to 2022. Oro Umaru claimed that he had previously caught them together and reported the incidents to his father, Alhaji Hamadu, but no action was taken.

In his confession to the police, Oro Umaru admitted to attacking Abubakar Sanda on September 8, 2023, after allegedly catching him in a conversation with his wife.

Abubakar Sanda fled upon seeing Oro Umaru approaching, but the confrontation ultimately escalated to a violent assault.

During the court proceedings, the plea of the accused, Oro Umaru, was not taken. Instead, the police prosecutor, Gbenga Ayeni, requested the court remand Oro Umaru in the Federal Correctional Facility pending the completion of the investigation.
