A man identified as Idris Aminu, has allegedly murdered his 75- years- old stepmother in the Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident happened in the afternoon of Monday while the deceased was having her siesta.

According to reports, Aminu clubbed the stepmother, Salamatu Aminu to death with a pestle after failed attempts to poison her.

The accused had accused the deceased of witchcraft and blamed her for his failures in life.

Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Ayah said the suspect has been arrested by the command and will be charged to court as soon as possible.

He further disclosed that the old woman was sleeping when her stepson killed her with a pestle.

There has been great excitement among women in Obajana community, Kogi State when no fewer than 40 women sponsored by Dangote Cement Plc. were graduated from skills acquisition training school on Thursday.

The women learnt fashion and design and were advised to be self-reliant on it.

The Daily Reality gathered that the training was meant to address the biting economic hardship prompted by job scarcity and unemployment in the country through job creation.

Mr JV Gungune, the Plant Director, of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana, while speaking at the graduation ceremony, said, “even though the job creation scheme aptly fits into the company’s vision and mission, it cannot do it alone, nor can it employ everyone.”

He also pleaded with the beneficiaries to put the skills and equipment provided by the company into proper use, adding that the beneficiaries should count themselves lucky to have been selected and trained.

The women also expressed happiness and gratitude to the President of the Dangote Group, Alh. Aliko Dangote.

The traditional rulers of the various communities commended the company and described the development as a huge intervention.

Also speaking, his Royal Highness, the Olu-Apata, Oba Dr Frederick D.O. Balogun, expressed appreciation and pledged his community’s continuing support for the company.

President Muhammadu Buhari said that he aimed to prevent governors and ministers from naming projects after him, but the Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, defied him.

On Thursday, during a visit to Kogi State, Buhari made this remark during a live broadcast on Arise TV.

New township road networks were opened in Idah, Okene, and all three senatorial districts by Buhari, along with the Reference Hospital in Okene and the Confluence University of Science and Technology at Osara.

Other projects in Lokoja include the Civic Center and Muhammadu Buhari Square, as well as the Ganaja Flyover, Model Science Secondary School, and school.

Buhari was quoted as saying, “I thank the Governor and the people of Kogi state for naming it (Muhammadu Buhari Square and Civic Centre) after me. Here, I have to digress; I attempted to stop governors and ministers from naming projects after me, but the Governor disobeyed me here.”

Women miners in Nigeria under the auspices of Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMIN), decry molestation and abuse by male colleagues at mining sites in the country.

The Founder and National president of WIMIN, Janet Adeyemi made the disclosure at Lokoja on Sunday, December 11, 2022 and sought the intervention of the federal government to tackle the menace.

Ms Adeyemi while speaking at a capacity building workshop for artisans and small-scale miners in Lokoja, said the abuse of women at mining sites have become rampant.

She noted that women in mining have become subjects of constant molestation, are often cheated, over-laboured, underpaid, and even raped by male colleagues and staff of the mining industries.

Adeyemi who was represented by the Programme Coordinator of WIMIN, Ms Dolaraine Dennis, said that the opportunities for women in mining are enormous and they include: operators, engineers and quarry fields etc.

Adeyemi claimed that research findings have shown that 73 per cent of assault against women are verbal.

“73 per cent of assaults against women are verbal.”she said

In the remark of the Kogi State Commissioner For Women Affairs, Hajia Fatima Buba, she applauded the organisers for their support in building the capacity of women in the mining sector in the state.

Muhammad Onogwu, the Chief Press Secretary to Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has bagged a law degree from Baze University, Abuja.

Mr Onogwu disclosed his achievement in a Facebook post on Saturday.

He had posted a photo of himself in a convocation gown with the caption “Alhamdulillah🙏🙏🙏LL.B “

While Mr Onogwu did not name the school he bagged a law degree from, the Daily Reality gathered that he is amongst the 504 recent graduates of Baze University Abuja. The institution held its 9th convocation ceremony on Saturday morning.

Baze University Abuja has become the darling institution of many celebrities and politicians who study there for different degree programs.

Senator Dino Melaye and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi are proud alumni of the institution. Amaechi graduated this year, Dino bagged a degree in law from the University in 2021.

The students of Federal University, Lokoja, FUL, are not finding it easy as they are confronted with the accommodation problem.

Weeks after the university resumed academic activities, following the suspension of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU strike, many students are stranded. Many are yet to find a place to live.

The tenancies of most students had expired during the ASUU strike. However, the continuous stay of some students whose tenancies expired had led to quarrels between them and their landlords.

The problem of accommodation in Nigerian universities is not peculiar to FUL students. However, the students are devastated as the school has no functional hostel on the two campuses.

The Daily Reality spoke to many students of the institution who were mainly afraid and sought to speak only on the grounds of anonymity.

A student said many of the departments had been moved from the Adankolo Campus of the institution to the main campus at Felele, and students were asked to begin lectures there in January. According to her, the students can not afford accommodation on the two campuses and are still writing examinations on the Adankolo Campus. She also said landlords are unwilling to take part payments for the remaining months in Adankolo Campus.

Other students narrated their ordeals of living with friends and relatives pending when they get accommodation.

It was also gathered that the flood, which ravaged many parts of Lokoja, is another reason accommodation has become more complex and expensive.

The Federal government intervened in the struggle for ownership of the Dangote cement factory in Obajana, Kogi State, on Monday.

The Federal Government intervened following the shutdown of the factory by the Kogi State government over the issue of ownership and allegation of tax evasion.

A reliable source in the Presidency confirmed the meeting at the Office of Chief of Staff to the President in the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

It was learned that the meeting had in attendance the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, Governors Yahaya Bello (Kogi) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa).

It said that the management of Dangote Group has concluded a plan to drag the state government to the court over its legality.

It was alleged that the vigilante members in the state stormed the factory and many of the company’s staff were wounded in the process.

A cylinder explosion has burned a family of four who were earlier displaced by the River Niger flood.

The victims have been hospitalized at the federal Medical Center, Lokoja, immediately after the traumatic incident.

The incident happened on Wednesday, September 28 at the victims’ new abode at Adankolo, a suburb of Lokoja where flood victims relocated to.

The Daily Reality gathered that the victims are Halimat Sadiya, Musa Aminat, Muhammad Musa and Abdussalam Hadizat.

It was reported that the victims were trying to fix a gas cylinder to cook when it suddenly exploded.

One of the victims’ relations, Godwin Wanbebe, told journalists that, “Shortly, after settling down in their new temporary abode, the victims decided to prepare something to eat. So, they brought out their gas cylinder and lit it. The cylinder exploded immediately.

“The explosion of the gas cylinder was attributed to the hurried manner in which they packed their belongings to avoid being taken over by water. Probably the cylinder was leaking and led to the explosion.”

Wanbebe, who urged members of public to come to their aid, said the family had spent all it had on the victims treatment.

The Maigari of Lokoja, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Muhammed Kabiru Maikarfi, has passed away at the age of 80.

The news of the monarch’s demise was announced by the Secretary of Lokoja Traditional Council, Muhammed Nadalo on Wednesday. 

According to Nadalo, the monarch died in a private hospital in Abuja after a brief illness. The statement also disclosed that the late royal father would be buried on Thursday in Lokoja at 4 pm. 

The monarch was crowned in 1992 and celebrated his 30 years on the Lokoja traditional stool a few months ago.

A 37-year-old man from Kogi State, Yusuf Shuaib, has launched a social media platform to bridge the gap between Nigerians and owners of social media companies.

The platform, named Ayema Social, was completed in June 2022, but the application was officially launched in September.

Yusuf holds a bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies from Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) (formerly Kogi State University), Anyigba, Kogi State. He started his technology journey during his service year in Kano in 2009 when he enrolled in an information technology diploma.

In a chat with The Daily Reality, Yusuf revealed that he wanted to do something to change the popular belief that Islamic studies graduates can only become teachers or lecturers. However, his interest in becoming a developer had barely sparked off until after observing the role of social media in the 2015 general elections. 

Concerning the number of users so far, Yusuf said Ayema Social had recorded over 260 users within its two weeks of launch. “It was made public earlier this month [September] after being subjected to a series of tests for over two months, and our target is a minimum of a million users by December, God willing,” he said.

He also revealed that the application had been endorsed by some dignitaries, including the member representing Ankpa/Olamaboro/Omala Federal Constituency, Honourable Abdullahi Ibrahim (Halims); the executive director of special projects at Nisa Premier Hospital, Abuja, Mr Tijjani Baba; and a senior officer of the Nigerian Air Force, Group Captain Ishaka Yakubu.

The founder, however, disclosed that only Android phones support the application version at the moment as he is still sourcing money to work towards making it accessible to users of Apple phones and iPads.

Regarding the security of users, Yusuf told The Daily Reality that the platform, which is named after his mother, Ayema, is bound by extant law global standards for data security and confidentiality, adding that the company is also in technical support partnerships with both Rayjoh Global Resources and Logical Address Limited.

Ayema Social shares many features with Facebook, and users can opt for either the website www.ayema.ng or its Android application version available on Google Play Store.
