Your Excellency, Abba Kabir Yusuf

I hope this message reaches you in good condition. I write this letter to advise you on the teachers whose salaries have been withheld pending their verification and screening of their recruiting processes. We all believe this is for sustaining education quality within the state boundaries. 

It is heartbreaking and adds pain to the people in mourning. The suspended teachers can now be seen as unemployed, leading to a high rate of criminality, a threat to the state’s peace and stability, and creating economic hardship for the state. 

With due respect, Your Excellency Governor, not all suspended teachers are unqualified and incompetent. Most of them obtained National Certificate In Education (NCE), which is requisite for teaching, and we believe in putting everything in place.

I kindly call on the Excellency Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and his cabinets for urgent consideration to reinstate the suspended teachers to take a breath of liberty. I hope this message reaches you on time and that you will consider my request.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I extend my best wishes to you as you continue leading Kano toward a brighter future.

Darul Erkam Foundation has fully sponsored three indigenous students of Kano state for undergraduate studies in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Aliyu Yusuf, the Director Public Enlightenment, Ministry of Education Kano State, disclosed this in a statement Friday.

Yusuf said the youths were sponsored following their outstanding performance in the just concluded Reading Competition of the Biography of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

He added in the statement, “The 3 sponsored students are Muhammad Nasiru Dantiye from Asal College, Fadima Musa Haruna from Kuntau Academy and Al-Amin Sani from Governor’s college.

“In addition to their sponsorship, Muhammad Nasiru Dantiye, who emerged as the overall winner of the reading competition, got a Prize of N700,000 and a Trophy, Fatima Musa Haruna received N650,000 and a Trophy for emerging in the 2nd position, while Al-Amin Sani who emerged the 3rd position received N600,000 and a Trophy.

“Speaking during the presentation of the awards at the coronation Hall of the state government House, Kano, the Commissioner of Education, Rt Hon. Ya’u Abdullahi Yan’shana expressed gratitude to Darul-Erkam Foundation for the kind gesture.

“The Commissioner noted with great pleasure the various humanitarian activities been rendered not only in Kano but in other states by the Darul-Erkam Foundation, saying only Allah the most gracious can reward them.

“Rt. Hon Yan’shana said he was much happier than any one of you here because this achievement has been recorded during my stewardship as the Commissioner of Education” 

“While congratulating the sponsored students for the height they have attained, he urged them to be good ambassadors of the state and their parents when they found themselves in Istanbul.

“To other participants of the reading competition who also revised different consolation prizes and medals, the Commissioner said they should not be reluctant as more opportunities are coming to their way, stressing that all of them should put into practice what they have read in the Biography of our Noble Prophet.

“In their separate remarks, the Chairmen of Murat Huda Vendigar Vafki Foundation and that of Darul-Erkam Foundation disclosed that the reading competition was part of the Humanitarian activities of the foundations aimed at boosting the reading culture of the participants as well as inculcating the practices of the life of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in their day to day activities.

“During the award presentations, all the participants were given a medal and cash prizes ranging from N5,000 to N200,000 depending on their performance,” the statement concluded.

The Kano State Ministry of Education has announced Sunday, January 8th, 2023, as a resumption day for all boarding public and private primary schools for the commencement of the 2nd term academic session.

A statement by the Director Public Enlightenment Ministry of Education of the state, Aliyu Yusuf, disclosed this on Saturday.

The statement added, “While expressing appreciation for the cooperation and support been [sic] accorded to the ministry, Commissioner Rt. Hon. Ya’u Abdullahi Yan’shana urged Parents/Guardians of Pupils and Students of the schools to ensure compliance with the approved resumption dates.

“The Commissioner who also wished the students and pupils successful commencement of the 2nd term Academic session, however, warned that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against defaulting students,” the statement added.

Public school teachers in Kano State have decried the way the state Ministry of Education allegedly extorts money from them amidst biting economic hardship in Nigeria.

A fresh secondary school teacher with NCE earns an estimated monthly salary of N32,000, an amount that cannot buy a bag of rice which is sold at N48,000, while degree holders take home N42,000 monthly.

The teachers, who clamoured for government intervention, alleged that the ministry forced them to pay a certain amount of money anytime their wallets ran low.

They described the unjustified way of imposition of tax on them as a new form of slavery.

The Daily Really gathered that the ministry recently asked the teachers to pay N2,500 each for mandatory computer training. They said even teachers who studied and taught computer science in schools could not escape the recent extortion.

However, one of the teachers, who preferred anonymity, confided in our reporter that that was not the first time the ministry allegedly extorted them.

He said, “This is not the first time we were asked to pay such kind of money. Just in July, a few days before Eid, all teachers in Kano were asked to pay N500 each.

“None of us dared to ask what the money was for. But we later realized that the money was just shared among a few selfish individuals,” the teacher said.

Another teacher, Sulaiman Muhammad, revealed that that was the third time he was forced to pay such an amount of money.

Muhammad said, “We paid N1,000 sometime around January to February. In July also, we paid N500 each and, now, N2,500.”

Ishaq Abdulfatah (not his real name) called on the government to look into the menace with a view to bringing it to an end, adding that “we are all frustrated with the development.”

He said, “Everyone knows about the economic hardship in Nigeria and what the masses are going through. We are struggling to survive on our low-level income.

“But sadly enough, these people extort money unjustifiably from us. Government should do something about it.”

Another teacher said, “On Monday, a delegation from the zonal office came to our school and told us about the computer training. They said every one of us must pay that money.

“He even said if we like, we shouldn’t go for the training. But what is more important is to pay the money. This surprised me very much.”

However, when contacted, Kano State Ministry of Education spokesperson Aliyu Yusuf told our reporter that the ministry was not aware of the alleged extortion.

He said, “I came to know about this development just now. But since you talked about secondary school teachers, I think you should go to Kano State Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSMB) for further inquiries.”

But, in what appeared surprising to many, the KSSSBM Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Baba, also claimed to be unaware of the development.

He said, “The only thing I know is the N1,000 that was initially collected was for ID cards. Apart from that, we didn’t collect any money from any teacher.”
