The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 28, and Thursday, June 29, as holidays in observance of Eid-El-Kabir.

This is contained in a statement by Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior.

The statement reads, “The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 28th, and Thursday, June 29th 2023, Public Holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration and heartily felicitates with the Muslim Ummah at home and in the diaspora,” the statement read.

“We are hopeful that the prayers and sacrifices that come with this great celebration, as well as the message of Eid-el-Kabir, will bring about peace, unity and progress in Nigeria”

Muslim faithful across the world are preparing to observe Eid El-Kabir, popularly called Babbar Sallah in Northern Nigeria, on Wednesday.

The personnel of Kano Road Transport Agency (KAROTA) have allegedly stabbed a Point of Sale (POS) operator and brutalised many others, including women in Kano, during the recent Eid-l-Kabir Durbar in Kano.

The victim, identified as Radiyuddin Tahir, who operated a POS service in the Sabon Titin Mandawari area in Gwale of Kano State, was watching durbar before his shop when the incident happened.

Radiyuddin sustains injury in the abdomen and is currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.

Eyewitnesses said the KAROTA personnel became furious when they alleged that onlookers yelled at them while they were following the entourage of Kano emir.

An eyewitness, a relative of the victim, Salahuddin Nams’aiki, narrated how the incident occurred: “the emir had passed while KAROTA were in the last part of the entourage rallying with their vehicle and weapons. They headed toward onlookers, and we were watching in front of our shop. They just came and started hitting people. That was how they stabbed him and injured other people, including women.” 

Another eyewitness said men of the KAROTA were passing in their vehicle rallying when some people yelled at them and started mocking them, which infuriated them to start beating people indiscriminately around the area, leading to stabbing the victim.

The young man’s parents have accused the KAROTA personnel of stabbing Radiyuddin with a knife in his business environment. 

Malama Balaraba Shehu, the victim’s mother, said the unfortunate incident traumatised her because Radiyuddin has been an essential family supporter, saying, “By Allah, he [the victim] has been supportive to the family and me. My child isn’t a thug. He doesn’t smoke. Why would they beat him like this? I pray God to come to our aid.”

KAROTA Public Relations Officer Nabulusi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa, who confirmed the clash, said they were yet to get the formal report because KAROTA and other security agencies were involved in the incident, which he said was not led by KAROTA.

He stated: “There was a clash, but it was a joint task force operation which included KAROTA, NSCDC, FRSC, Police etc. not KAROTA alone is involved in the operation. And it is not KAROTA that was leading the team. 

“Just like he was injured, KAROTA operatives and others were also wounded. Four KAROTA officers sustained injuries; three of them were hospitalised, but they were discharged earlier today. So we are waiting for the report of the incident before taking any action. We cannot say anything now.”

A legal practitioner in Kano, Barr Abba Hikima, said carrying weapons by KAROTA operatives contravenes Nigerian laws, adding “we often receive complaints from people on how KAROTA operatives hit people or people’s vehicles. There is no law that allows them to wield a weapon of any kind. It contravenes Nigeria’s laws. Commissioner of Police should arrest those carrying weapons because it is against public order.”

Police Public Relations Officer in Kano SP Abdullahi Kiyawa neither answered several calls to his mobile phone nor replied to a message sent to him.

The Police, however, in a statement by the spokesman Abdullahi Kiyawa said the Sallah celebration was peaceful in the State, but 85 thugs were arrested across five emirates of the State.

Alhaji Muhammed Jamiu Idris, the Chief Executive Officer of Always Petroleum Energy Services, has been abducted by unknown gunmen. 

Our reporters gathered that Idris was abducted at his residence in Idare in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.

However, he was said to have been beaten mercilessly before being whisked to an unknown destination.

A family source disclosed that the men disguised as Sallah visitors before they eventually brought out sophisticated weapons and instructed Idris to follow them.

The source added that the kidnappers shot sporadically to scare people who attempted to resist the kidnapping of Idris.

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident to journalists. He stated that the abductors went to the house shortly after the Eid prayers.

The kidnappers had not made any contact with his family as at the time of this report.

Slaughtering of animals on the tenth day of Zul-hijja is one of the core forms of worship for that day. Those animals include rams, sheep, goats, cows, camels. However, the ram is always preferable to the other animals, especially with respect to the tradition of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

In Islam, this tradition of slaughtering originated since Prophet Abraham (AS), when Allahu (SWT) commanded him to slaughter his son as a form of sacrifice. However, on laying him to the ground to slaughter him, the divine command changed. Then the Almighty sent him a ram to slaughter instead of his beloved son.

With the coming of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the final Messenger sent by Allah to preach to humankind, the tradition of slaughtering got attached a full-fledged form of worship.

As part of “ibadat”, it’s highly recommended for every sane, financially capable Muslim to get any of the animals mentioned above—preferably a ram—to slaughter on the tenth day of Zul-hijja.

Looking at how the nation has plunged into an economic quagmire that bites harder, ram buyers are groaning over the high prices of ram in Bauchi. We, therefore, tried to survey the cost of rams and a comparison as to how they were sold in 2020 and how they are sold this year.

A buyer of ram, who bought a ram from Durun market in Bauchi State alongside his other two friends and who pleaded anonymity said, “Rams that ranged from ₦30,000 to ₦31,000 now cost from ₦48,000 to ₦50,000 thereby amounting to an increment to the tune of ₦20,000 each. Each of us bought rams, whose prices were ₦48,000, ₦49,000 and ₦50,000.”

Also, a seller of rams, who also wanted his name not to be mentioned, said, “First of all, I am engaged in the business of selling animals, and Eid el-Kabir is just around the corner. But there is one problem.”

When asked what the problem was, he added, “The animals have become untouchable because their prices are too high. Money is not circulating among people. Only those that are financially strong come to buy. Common people no longer come; they can only buy a goat worth like ₦12,000 or ₦13,000 and get back home. Last year, people had money, unlike this year.”

He confirmed that there had been an increase of about ₦20,000 when compared to last year. “And again, a ram that was worth ₦30,000 last year would now cost up to ₦50,000,” he added.

Tuesday, July 20, was declared Eid Day and, thus, a public holiday in Nigeria.

Ram sellers in Kaduna famous Zango Cattle Market on Monday decried low patronage barely 24 hours to the 2021 Eid-el-Kabir celebration. The ram sellers said that customers were not forthcoming, and their hope for a brisk business this year seems to have been dashed due to the poor state of the nation’s economy. According to some ram sellers, the situation has forced many of them to sell on credit.

A livestock dealer at the market, Malam Samaila, said that the ram business was not flourishing as before due to the economic and insecurity situations in the country.

Investigation reveals that a medium-size ram is sold at N40000 against its previous price of N25000, while a well-bred ram is sold for between N90000 and N150000. The prices of sheep and goats also indicate similar hikes as they are sold at N20,000 and N25000 against their previous prices of N15,000 and N10,000, respectively. 

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 21, 2021 as public holidays.

The declaration was made by Interior Minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The minister congratulates all Muslim faithful home and abroad. He also advises them to “imbibe the spirit of love, peace, kindness, and sacrifice as exemplified by the holy prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).”

The minister also implores the Muslim faithful to pray in the period for “peace, unity, prosperity, and the stability of the country, considering the challenges of insecurity we face at the moment.”

He gives assurance on the commitment of Muhammadu Buhari’s administration on security of lives and prosperity of Nigerians, empowerment, social investment programs, and adequate security for schools.

He also states the need for all Nigerians to keep on observing the COVID-19 protocols by wearing face masks, washing hands regularly, and keeping physical distance which can help in stemming the transmission of the dreaded pandemic in the country.

According to the highest body saddled with the responsibility of moon sighting in Nigeria (the sultanate council), Sunday the 11th of July 2021 was declared the first day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah in Nigeria.

The first ten days of Zhull Hijja (the last month on the Islamic calendar) are observed with reverence by Muslims worldwide. Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him (PBUH), said: There are no days on which good deeds are more beloved to Allah than the days of Hajj.

Muslim faithful globally assemble in Meccah to perform one of Islam’s fundamental principles (Hajj). Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only Saudi nationals are allowed to perform the Hajj this year. However, those who cannot visit the holy land are not left behind to accomplish good actions. Those at home are admonished to thank their Lord frequently, seek forgiveness, intensify prayers and fast throughout the nine pivotal days or at least fast on the Arafat day.  Muslims are enjoined to make sacrifices on the tenth day to seek Allah’s pleasure. 

According to Islamic teachings, remembering Allah wipes away sins, cures problems, and eliminates calamities no matter how burdensome they may be. Speaking about difficulties and calamities, indeed Nigeria is a country in a critical period; now is the perfect time for our Muslim brothers and sisters to intensify prayers and seek Allah’s intervention to free the country from the shackles of Boko Haram, banditry, kidnappings, armed robbery, violent secessionists, domestic violence, and other forms of terrorism.

Sallah is in a few days, but ordinary Nigerians can no longer afford the Salla ram, thanks to inflation. So while it’s part of Sunnah to make sacrifices by slaughtering an animal at the end of the ten days, it is strongly advised that the fortunate among us should give aid to the less privileged. Doing so will increase their wealth and will please Allah, adding more blessings to their wealth.
