Inspector Aminu Ibrahim of the Kano State Police Command has reportedly died after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach while on duty in the Hotoro area of Kano.

The incident happened around 5:40 am on Saturday when the officer, attached to Hotoro Division, entered a toilet within the premises of a private firm.

Sources said the inspector’s loaded AK-47 rifle, which was hanging around his neck, went off while he was squatting.

“The rifle, with registration number GT 4177, was found cocked and unsafe, with an empty shell recovered. 

“Twenty-nine rounds of ammunition were counted against the 30 earlier issued to him,” a source explained.

He was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead. His body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, stated that the command has launched an investigation and will release its findings soon.

The Kano State Police Command has announced a ban on the operation of tricycles, popularly known as Keke Napep, by underage individuals within the Kano metropolis.

Spokesperson of the Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, in a video he posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday, said the decision followed a disturbing increase in accidents linked to underage riders. 

He added that the practice was responsible for 16 serious but preventable crashes, resulting in injuries and damage to property.

Kiyawa further noted that the Command has observed a growing trend of road users disregarding traffic lights and other regulations, a development he described as a major cause of avoidable accidents and traffic gridlock in the state.

He warned that riding tricycles by underage persons remains prohibited under the law and poses serious risks to both the riders and other road users. 

Parents and guardians, he stressed, must stop allowing their children to operate tricycles, as offenders—both the riders and the owners—will face severe penalties.

“All road users must obey traffic lights and other traffic regulations. The Command will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating traffic laws to ensure the safety and security of road users,” the statement added. 

He noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, assured residents of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. 

He said enforcement teams have been deployed and urged members of the public to report underage tricycle riding, reckless driving, or other traffic offences to the nearest police station or via 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.

Police in Kano have successfully thwarted an attempt by suspected bandits to infiltrate the state, leading to the arrest of four individuals.  

The spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the development, stating that the suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence that they had arrived in Kano intending to purchase an AK-47 rifle.  

SP Haruna added that the suspects were found in possession of various weapons and are currently in custody as investigations continue.

A joyous celebration of a wedding ceremony in Kano turned into a very traumatic incident as some of the guests died and eight others ended up in hospitals after drinking tea prepared with local leaf, Zakami and unidentified pills.

The incident occurred on the weekend in Sheka, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

Alhaji Usman Musa Zakari, the ward head of the area, confirmed the development to journalists on Wednesday.

Zakari said the figures circulating about the number of victims were baseless and unconfirmed, giving the name of the deceased as Mubarak Bala, also known as Diga and Ibrahim Khalil.

According to him, “It is true that the incident happened. It happened when the persons drank a tea prepared with a local leaf called Zakami and a combination of other drugs. Two persons died, and eight others were hospitalised.

“Although there are different versions of the stories being peddled, I delegated persons who went on a fact-finding, and we gathered that only two persons lost their lives. Someone told me four had lost their lives and I asked him to take me to the houses but he later told me that the figure was hearsay.

“Eight other persons were hospitalised after drinking from the tea, but they have all been discharged and going about with their day-to-day activities.”

However, the spokesperson of Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, said no formal report was made to the police division of the area.

Ibrahim Musa, alias Iro Kwarangwal, 22, from Kano, allegedly killed his 50-year-old biological mother, Jummai, by stabbing her during an argument.
 
The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m. in the Karshen Kwalta and Rimin Kebe apartments in the Ungogo Local Government Area of the state.
 
An eyewitness said, “I was standing outside my house when I suddenly heard screaming from the deceased residence.”
 
He stated that when he ran in to see if he could help, he discovered the dead woman wailing for assistance in a pool of her own blood.
 
The culprit is said to have left the scene quickly after allegedly committing the horrible crime against his mother, according to the eyewitness.
 
The deceased was later brought to the hospital on a tricycle with blood all over her body, according to the witness, and was later declared dead there.
 
“She had since yesterday been buried in accordance with Islamic rites. May Allah forgive her and admit her to paradise,” the witness prayed.
 
When reached, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Kano Police Command’s public relations officer, confirmed the incident.

DSP Kiyawa later added, via his verified Facebook page, that they arrested the suspect at a hideout in Dawakin Tofa, after which he (Iro) “confessed to the crime and also confessed to dealing in illicit drug abuse.

He will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.”

Kano State Police Command said it had apprehended 198 suspects for various criminal activities in the State.

Police Commissioner, Sama’ila Dikko, made l this known while briefing journalists on Thursday in Kano.

CP Dikko explained that the suspects were arrested between 27th June to 21st July in different parts of the State in their efforts to “protect with courage and serve with compassion”.

He stated: “From our last Press Release of 27th June 2022 to date, i.e. for 24 days, the Command arrested One Hundred and Ninety-Eight (198) suspects for major offences which include; Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Car Theft, Fraud, Thuggery (Daba), Drug Abuse, etc., most of which were charged to court for prosecution.”

According to Dikko, the suspects arrested are “Forty-Two (42) Armed Robbery Suspects; Nine (9) Kidnapping Suspects; Sixteen (16) Suspected Fraudsters; Two (2) Human Trafficking Suspects; Twenty-Seven (27) Motor Vehicles and Tricycles Thieves; Twelve (12) Suspected Drug Dealers; Ninety-Two (92) Suspected Thugs (‘Yan Daba).”

The Police Chief further said they rescued trafficked persons and recovered weapons, “Five (5) Human Trafficking Victims; Twenty-Five (25) Rifles, including Three (3) AK-47s, One (1) Micro Uzi, One (1) Pistol, One (1) Pump Action, Ten (10) locally made Pistols and Nine (9) Den Guns; One Hundred and Twenty-Two (122) Knives and Ninety-Six (96) Other Rod-made Sharp Weapons.”

He said the command also recovered stolen vehicles and motorcycles “Twelve (12) Motor Vehicles; Seven (7) Tricycles and Three (3) Motorcycles.”

Dikko further revealed that some drugs and substances were found in possession of the suspects.

“Two Hundred and Sixty-Nine (269) Parcels and Two Hundred and Sixty-Five (265) Wraps of Dried Leaves Suspected to be Indian Hemp valued Two Million, Seven Hundred and Twenty Five Thousand Naira (N2,725,000:00); Seventy-Four (74) Bottles of Suck and Die Substance and Two Hundred and Eighty (280) Pieces of Exol Tablets.”

Other recoveries include four (4) laptop computers, 134 Mobile Phones and 16 Plasma TV.

He said the Police are committed to community-based and citizen-led policing in the State.

He applauded other security agencies, residents and civil society organisations for their support and cooperation toward ensuring a crime-free Kano State.

The personnel of Kano Road Transport Agency (KAROTA) have allegedly stabbed a Point of Sale (POS) operator and brutalised many others, including women in Kano, during the recent Eid-l-Kabir Durbar in Kano.

The victim, identified as Radiyuddin Tahir, who operated a POS service in the Sabon Titin Mandawari area in Gwale of Kano State, was watching durbar before his shop when the incident happened.

Radiyuddin sustains injury in the abdomen and is currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.

Eyewitnesses said the KAROTA personnel became furious when they alleged that onlookers yelled at them while they were following the entourage of Kano emir.

An eyewitness, a relative of the victim, Salahuddin Nams’aiki, narrated how the incident occurred: “the emir had passed while KAROTA were in the last part of the entourage rallying with their vehicle and weapons. They headed toward onlookers, and we were watching in front of our shop. They just came and started hitting people. That was how they stabbed him and injured other people, including women.” 

Another eyewitness said men of the KAROTA were passing in their vehicle rallying when some people yelled at them and started mocking them, which infuriated them to start beating people indiscriminately around the area, leading to stabbing the victim.

The young man’s parents have accused the KAROTA personnel of stabbing Radiyuddin with a knife in his business environment. 

Malama Balaraba Shehu, the victim’s mother, said the unfortunate incident traumatised her because Radiyuddin has been an essential family supporter, saying, “By Allah, he [the victim] has been supportive to the family and me. My child isn’t a thug. He doesn’t smoke. Why would they beat him like this? I pray God to come to our aid.”

KAROTA Public Relations Officer Nabulusi Abubakar Kofar Na’isa, who confirmed the clash, said they were yet to get the formal report because KAROTA and other security agencies were involved in the incident, which he said was not led by KAROTA.

He stated: “There was a clash, but it was a joint task force operation which included KAROTA, NSCDC, FRSC, Police etc. not KAROTA alone is involved in the operation. And it is not KAROTA that was leading the team. 

“Just like he was injured, KAROTA operatives and others were also wounded. Four KAROTA officers sustained injuries; three of them were hospitalised, but they were discharged earlier today. So we are waiting for the report of the incident before taking any action. We cannot say anything now.”

A legal practitioner in Kano, Barr Abba Hikima, said carrying weapons by KAROTA operatives contravenes Nigerian laws, adding “we often receive complaints from people on how KAROTA operatives hit people or people’s vehicles. There is no law that allows them to wield a weapon of any kind. It contravenes Nigeria’s laws. Commissioner of Police should arrest those carrying weapons because it is against public order.”

Police Public Relations Officer in Kano SP Abdullahi Kiyawa neither answered several calls to his mobile phone nor replied to a message sent to him.

The Police, however, in a statement by the spokesman Abdullahi Kiyawa said the Sallah celebration was peaceful in the State, but 85 thugs were arrested across five emirates of the State.

Kano State Police Commissioner, Samaila Dikko, has donated N8, 900,000 to families of the deceased police officer who lost their lives while serving the Force.

The next of kin to the seven families of the late police officers were given cheques of the money on behalf of the benefitting families.

In a statement sent to The Daily Reality, Police spokesman in Kano, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the gesture was to ease the suffering of families before the entitlements of the deceased are paid.

“The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, fsi presents cheques amounting to Eight Million, Nine Hundred Thousand Naira (N8,900,000:00) to seventeen beneficiaries under the Inspector General of Police, IGP Alkali Baba Usman, psc(+), NPM, fdc Family Welfare Scheme.

The beneficiaries that were presented with the cheques are the Next of Kin of deceased Police Officers.”

CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, fsi famously known by the good people of Kano State as “Nagari-Nakowa” urged the beneficiaries to judiciously use the money for the upkeep and welfare of the families.

He further stated that “the IGP’s welfare scheme was meant to ameliorate the suffering or hardship faced by the deceased immediate family before the benefits of such officers are paid. CP concluded his remark by praying for the departed souls,” the release noted.

The beneficiaries promised to make good use of the money as it comes at the right time for the families.

SP Kiyawa, however, did not mention how much each family received.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 5 armed robbery suspects terrorising some parts of the State.

The suspects were said to have specialised in breaking into people’s residences in Tishama Hotoro Quarters where they operated as a syndicate.

Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a statement sent to The Daily Reality said the suspects were arrested after an investigation following complaints by the residents.

According to Kiyawa, four suspects were arrested while another suspect who received stolen items was also apprehended.

The statement read: “Between June and July 2022, there was public outcry at Tishama Hotoro Quarters Kano on the activities of a syndicate of hoodlums that specialized in House Breaking and Armed Robbery. One Kabiru Tukur, ‘m’, of Tishama Hotoro Quarters Kano, further complained that the syndicate of four went to his residence twice and robbed him of his Plasma TV and Four Mobile Phones. Four-Armed Robbery cases were recorded in the area with the same “modus operandi”.

“On receipt of the reports, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, fsi raised and instructed a team of Operation Puff Adder led by CSP Mansur Idris, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Hotoro Division to arrest the culprits. The team immediately swung into action.”

“Sustained efforts coupled with intelligence-led surveillance patrol led to the arrest of all the syndicate members as follows:-

i. Idris Mohammed, ‘m’, 19 years old,

ii. Nasiru Abdulhamid, ‘m’, 24 years old,

iii. Sunusi Ibrahim, ‘m’, 27 years old,

iv. Bashir Yunusa, ‘m’, 25 years old, All of Tishama, Hotoro Quarters Kano.

“On investigation, the suspects confessed to all the Armed Robberies committed in the area. A discreet Investigation conducted by a team of Detectives at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department led by CSP Ahmed Abdullahi resulted in the arrest of the receiver, Rabi’u Sani, ‘m’, 32 years old of Tishama, Hotoro Quarters Kano. Four Plasma TV and Eleven Mobile Phones were recovered from them.”

The Police would charge the suspects to Court and thorough investigation.

He called on the general public to continue to support the Nigeria Police in trying to protect the lives and properties of residents of the State.

Kano State Police Command has returned seven (7) vehicles stolen from different parts of the State to their rightful owners after thoroughly investigating the suspects.

The Police Command said three other vehicles remain in its custody as nobody advanced any claim.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement to journalists in Kano.

SP Kiyawa noted that the arrest of Odinaka Godwin and two others with nine number plates led to further investigation that unravelled their activities in Kano, which enabled the police to recover ten stolen vehicles.

“In continuation of a case of suspected Motor Vehicles theft, where one Odinaka Godwin, ‘m’, and two others were arrested in possession of nine (9) Pairs of Motor Vehicles number plates, a total of ten (10) Motor Vehicles were so far recovered.”

“The Commissioner of Police had directed that seven (7) of the recovered stolen Motor Vehicles were handed over to owners; whereas, the following Motor Vehicles are yet to be claimed;

i. Toyota Camry LE Motor Vehicle, Golden Colour with Registration Number ADK-885AE, Ekiti 

ii. Toyota RAV4 Motor Vehicle, Black in colour with Registration Number APP-35BP Lagos 

iii. Toyota Camry LE Motor Vehicle, Ash in Colour without Registration Number, he narrated.”

According to Kiyawa, three other suspects were arrested for faking motor documents in the State.

“Discreet investigation also led to the arrest of one Abdulra’uf Olalade, ‘m’, 57 years old Fagge Quarters Kano. His accomplices, Abdullahi Suleman, ‘m’, 52 years old of Kurna Quarters Kano, and Suleman Ibrahim, ‘m’, 57 years old Haye Hotoron Arewa Quarters Kano, were arrested. 

“The suspects confessed to having specialized in producing fake Motor Vehicles Documents, he said

The Police spokesman further explained that the suspects would be charged to court after a thorough investigation.

He called on people whose vehicles were stolen with the above description to present themselves at the police public relations unit at Bompai headquarters.

“The discreet investigation is in progress, after which suspects will be charged to court for prosecution. 

“Anyone whose Motor Vehicle was stolen and discovered above should report it at the PPRO office, Bompai Police Headquarters Kano, or contact 08168629521, 08105359575.”

While commending residents of Kano for supporting the police, he called on the criminals to desist from their activities or face the full wrath of the law.

Kiyawa further warned the general public against taking laws into their hands.
