The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has signed into law four landmark bills that establish new agencies designed to strengthen institutional frameworks and accelerate sustainable development across the state.

This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The new laws provide for the establishment of the Kano State Protection Agency, the Signage and Advertisement Agency, the Information and Communication Technologies Development Agency, and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency.

According to the statement, these laws, which are now part of the Kano State legal framework, are expected to stimulate innovation, support small businesses, regulate signage and advertising, and enhance public protection and service delivery.

The governor described the signing as a significant step toward realising his administration’s vision of a modern, inclusive, and economically vibrant Kano.

He reiterated that the new agencies will play a vital role in job creation, investment attraction, and the efficient implementation of government initiatives.

“Our mission is to lay a solid foundation for a greater Kano. These laws go beyond policy — they are key instruments of transformation that will help drive our development agenda,” the governor stated.

The governor further warns that, violations of the provisions of these laws would attract strict penalties, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring compliance.

The establishment of these agencies reflects Yusuf’s continued efforts to reform public institutions, improve governance, and position Kano as a leading centre for innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable growth.

The Kano State Government has approved an increment in salaries for both academic and non-academic staff of tertiary institutions in the state.

The adjustment ranges from 25 to 35 percent.

The Commissioner for Information, Comrade Abdullahi Waiya, made this known while addressing journalists on the resolutions of the State Executive Council meeting.

He stated that the revised salary structure, which will take effect in March 2025, is intended to enhance workers’ welfare and strengthen the education sector.

“The academic staff will be receiving a 25 percent increase, while the non-academic staff will benefit from a 35 percent increase,” Waiya said.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to improving education under its State of Emergency on Education policy.

“This decision underscores the determination of the government to improve the conditions of workers and reinforce the education system,” the commissioner added.

Beyond salary adjustments, the council allocated N3.4 billion for several development projects across the state.

“To improve the state’s electrical infrastructure, the council approved N612.4 million for converting external electrical systems to an underground network at Government House and relocating power lines along Ahmadu Bello Way,” Waiya revealed.

He further disclosed that N148.9 million was set aside for road maintenance at the Kano State School of Technology, a project to be handled by the Kano Road Maintenance Agency (KARMA).

“Additionally, N367.9 million was approved as an advance payment for the expansion of Zaria Road, from Silver Jubilee to Dantata & Sawoe main yard,” he added.

The council also allocated N662 million to cater for the feeding of students in boarding schools from the third to the fifth week of the current academic term.

Furthermore, N348 million was approved to clear outstanding electricity bills owed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) for November and December 2024.In another development, N184 million was approved for the purchase of two ambulances—one for the Government House Clinic and the other for Nuhu Bamalli Maternity Hospital.

In an effort to promote social development, the council endorsed the reopening of the Kiru Reformatory Institute to rehabilitate troubled youths.

Additionally, a new Department for People with Disabilities was created under the Ministry of Women, Children, and Disabled Affairs.

“The government remains committed to policies that promote inclusivity and social welfare. The reopening of the Kiru Reformatory Institute will ensure the rehabilitation and reintegration of troubled youths into society,” Waiya stated.

The commissioner also announced that N100 million was approved for the Nigeria Union of Pensioners to organize its Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Kano.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced a series of significant appointments and promotions aimed at bolstering governance and improving service delivery within the state.

The appointments were detailed in a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Wednesday.

Among the notable appointments is Architect Hauwa Hassan Tudun Wada, who has been named the new Managing Director of the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).

A distinguished Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and Vice Chairperson of Female Architects in Nigeria, Hauwa brings extensive experience from her previous role as a Professional Architect at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

She holds degrees in Architecture from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and is recognized as one of the first female architects to excel in Kano.

In another key appointment, Mustapha Muhammad has been designated as the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor. With over 20 years of experience in journalism, including a prior position as a Senior Broadcaster at the BBC, Mustapha holds both BSc and MSc degrees in Mass Communication and is currently pursuing a PhD in the field.

In addition to these appointments, two senior officials have been promoted. Zulaihat Yusuf Aji has been elevated to Deputy Managing Director of Radio Kano, having previously served as Senior Special Assistant on Broadcast (1) at the Media and Public Relations Directorate.

Engineer Abduljabbar Nanono has also been promoted to Deputy Managing Director of KHEDCO and has served as Senior Special Assistant on Renewable Energy.

The Kano State Government has cleared eight months’ salary arrears for 2,369 street sweepers, reaffirming its commitment to improving workers’ welfare and environmental sanitation.

The official disbursement took place on Wednesday at the Coronation Hall, Government House, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, handed out ATM cards loaded with the payments.

Dr. Hashim explained that the government had earlier disbursed one month’s salary to ease the workers’ financial burden while working on a sustainable payment system.

“Today, all outstanding payments have been settled, and moving forward, salaries will be paid promptly every month, In Sha Allah,” he assured.

He urged the sweepers to remain dedicated to their duties and continue supporting the administration’s efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier Kano.

He also highlighted the crucial role of street sweepers in the government’s urban renewal initiatives.

Dr. Hashim noted that upon assuming office, the administration inherited a backlog of six months’ unpaid salaries for the workers, which later increased to eight months.

He reiterated that the settlement of these arrears aligns with the government’s broader efforts to modernize the city and enhance public infrastructure.

Plans are underway to introduce mechanized street cleaning, with daily road washing expected to commence within the next three to four months.

Additionally, the government has screened the workers and opened bank accounts for them, ensuring future payments are made simultaneously with other government employees.

He further revealed that Governor Yusuf had directed the renewal of uniforms and the provision of protective gear, including face masks and shoes, for the sweepers.

Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the payment, with Dayyaba Abubakar from Kumbotso Local Government thanking the governor for his support, while Salisu Sani described the salary settlement as a great relief.

Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has forwarded a nominee to the state House of Assembly for screening as a commissioner.

During Monday’s plenary, Speaker Jibrin Falgore read a letter from the governor, introducing Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu as the nominee.

Adamu currently serves as the Managing Director of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).

Falgore stated that the assembly would soon invite the nominee for screening.

Meanwhile, the House passed a bill establishing an infrastructure management agency.

Majority Leader Lawan Husseini (NNPP-Dala) explained that the agency would oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of key infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public buildings, to enhance efficiency in the state.

The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the reconstruction of 17 dilapidated roads in the Kano metropolitan area as part of his urban renewal agenda for the city to meet a mega city status.

The governor said the effort is to make Kano state “one of the finest mega cities in Nigeria.”

This is contained in a statement released by the Spokesperson to the governor Sanusi Bature DawakinTofa and distributed to journalists on Saturday.

The statement in part read that, “The Governor flagged off the reconstruction of Club Road as part of 17 Urban Renewal Projects in Kano Metropolis held at Nassarawa Local Government Area on Saturday”.

“I feel highly delighted, I feel happy and I feel fulfilled, as your governor who made a promise during our NNPP electioneering campaign, especially in the metropolis, we made a promise when elected, by the Grace of Almighty Allah we are going to make Kano in terms of infrastructural development as one of the best cities in Nigeria,” Yusuf was quoted as saying.

“Today, we are flagging one of the gigantic projects for the rehabilitation of dilapidated metropolitan roads which were deliberated and approved by the State Executive Council,” the governor hinted.

Yusuf noted to the people of the state that any project under his administration would meet global standards before being handed over.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work being executed by the contractor and appealed to him to maintain the standard.

The governor said contractors should expect his unplanned visits to the site anytime to ensure accountability.

On the other hand, the Commissioner of Works and Infrastructural Development Marwan Ahmad said the Urban Renewal Programme for Kano Metropolis was initiated by Governor Abba Kabir and approved by cabinet members.

He said this particular project begins from Club Road to Ashton Road to Airport Road to Murtala Mohammed Road respectively.

Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has lost his Special Adviser on Intercommunity Relations, Alhaji Abdussalam Abiola Abdullateef, who passed away after a brief illness.

Family sources confirmed to journalists that Abdussalam died on Saturday and was laid to rest in the evening at Hajji Camp burial ground.

Originally from Osun State, the late Abdussalam was a graduate of accountancy from Bayero University Kano and had recently retired from the National Orthopedic Hospital Dala in Kano.

He previously served as a special adviser from 2011 to 2015 under the administration of Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has suspended the Acting Head of Service and Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Salisu Mustapha, with immediate effect over alleged salary deductions and non-payment of some civil servants’ salaries.

A statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed that Mustapha has also been directed to step aside from his position as Permanent Secretary, Establishment, under the Office of the Head of Service, to allow for a thorough investigation.

To ensure smooth administration, the governor approved the appointment of Malam Umar Muhammad Jalo, the Permanent Secretary of REPA, as the new Acting Head of Service pending the outcome of the probe.

Governor Yusuf reiterated his zero-tolerance stance on financial malpractice, warning that anyone found culpable will face severe consequences.

Earlier on Thursday, the governor had issued a stern warning over the widespread complaints of salary underpayment and non-payment affecting state civil servants since October 2024.

In response, he inaugurated a seven-man committee led by Abdulkadir Abdussalam to investigate the issue.

The committee has been given seven days to uncover the root of the irregularities and submit its findings.

Mustapha was appointed Acting Head of Service earlier this month following the medical leave of the substantive Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, who is currently receiving treatment in India.

The Kano State Government has approved the payment of nine months’ salary arrears to 2,369 sanitation workers across the state.

The payment, covering June 2024 to February 2025, was sanctioned by the Kano State Executive Council under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, announced the development on Tuesday, describing it as a crucial step toward enhancing environmental sustainability in the state.

He commended the government’s dedication to improving hygiene and the well-being of its citizens, adding that the timely disbursement would serve as motivation for the workers.

“This action reflects the unwavering commitment of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to ensuring a cleaner and healthier Kano. Our sanitation workers have shown commendable patience and dedication despite the delay,” Dr. Hashim stated.

He further expressed appreciation to the State Executive Council for facilitating the payment and assured that other sanitation personnel, including House-to-House Inspectors and members of the Sanitation Vanguard, would soon be considered for similar benefits.

With over 837,000 out-of-school children in Kano, the state government has intensified efforts to address the crisis, beginning with a comprehensive assessment tour of rural communities ahead of a planned sensitization campaign.

The Kano State Ministry of Education embarked on the tour to identify the root causes of the problem and engage with communities to find lasting solutions.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve access to education, especially in underserved areas.

Led by the State Coordinator for Girl Child Education, Hajiya Amina Kassim, the assessment team visited several rural settlements, including Bange village in Albasu Local Government Area and Mawashi in Garko Local Government Area.

During the visit, the team engaged with parents, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to understand the challenges keeping children out of school.

Speaking to residents, Hajiya Kassim emphasized that poverty, insecurity, and socio-cultural norms are key factors contributing to the alarming number of out-of-school children.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling these challenges, citing the recent declaration of a state of emergency on education as proof of its dedication to reforms.

“The state government is taking bold steps to improve education outcomes, and this tour is a crucial part of that process.

“We will ensure that our sensitization campaign reaches areas most affected by this issue,” she stated.

Vice Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee, Alhaji Garba Adamu Wudil, described the assessment tour as a critical step in designing effective strategies to curb the crisis.

He stressed that direct engagement with communities would provide valuable insights into the complexities surrounding access to education.

In their remarks, the village head of Kafin Malamai in Garko, Mukhtar Aliyu, and the representative of the village head of Bange, Yau Ibrahim Bange, commended the government’s initiative.

They appealed for the establishment of more secondary schools in their communities to accommodate the growing number of students completing junior secondary education.

The government’s assessment tour sets the stage for a more focused and community-driven approach to tackling the out-of-school children crisis in Kano State.
