Kano bans Islamic singers’ debates without approval

By Uzair Adam The Kano State Censorship Board has placed an immediate ban on all Islamic singers’ debates across the state unless prior approval is obtained from the board.

According to the board, the move is aimed at ensuring peace, harmony, and compliance among stakeholders in the entertainment and religious sectors.

In a statement signed by the spokesman, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, on Tuesday, the board said the decision followed a recent unapproved debate between Usman Maidubun Isa and Shehi Mai Tajul’izzi, describing it as a violation of its operational guidelines.

While inaugurating a fact-finding investigation committee chaired by Malam Isha Abdullahi, Director of Special Duties, the Executive Secretary, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the two singers and their moderators to appear before the committee.

The board warned that organizing such debates without official consent contravenes the Kano State Censorship Law and may attract legal consequences.

El-Mustapha reaffirmed the board’s commitment to regulating and supervising the activities of Islamic singers and performers in the state.

He urged the public to remain calm and to support the board by providing useful information that would enhance peace, understanding, and cultural development across Kano State.

Kano law students appeal to Gov. Yusuf as scholarship delay bites harder

By Uzair Adam

Kano State students currently enrolled at the Nigerian Law School have appealed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene in the delayed payment of their scholarships.

The students, in an open letter signed by Najeebullah Lawan on behalf of his colleagues, said they concluded the mandatory screening exercise conducted by the Kano State Scholarship Board over five months ago but have not received any information on their entitlements since then.

They described the situation as frustrating, noting that the financial strain of law school has left many of them struggling to cope.

“After undergoing the basic screening by the Kano State Scholarship Board more than five months ago, we were hopeful of receiving the much-needed scholarship support to aid our studies. However, we haven’t received any update on the status of our awards,” the letter stated.

The students further explained that the cost of books, study materials, and daily upkeep has become overwhelming, stressing that a timely response from the state government would greatly ease their burden.

“The cost of buying books, materials, and meeting our daily needs is overwhelming. Your timely intervention would be a huge relief and a boost to our academic pursuits,” they added.

They urged Governor Yusuf to fast-track the payment of their scholarship, saying the intervention would motivate them to excel and return to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kano State.

Kano empowers 600 through L-PRES livestock business training

By Uzair Adam

The Kano State Government has launched a comprehensive training initiative aimed at equipping 600 beneficiaries with business planning skills in the livestock sector, under the World Bank-supported Livestock Productivity and Resilience Enhancement Project (L-PRES).

Organized through the State Ministry of Agriculture, the training commenced on Wednesday with a focus on beef and dairy production, targeting mainly youth and women.

The objective is to help participants develop viable and bankable business plans that can attract financial support.

Speaking, Dr. Sunusi Abubakar, the L-PRES National Project Coordinator, described the training as essential in preparing beneficiaries to expand their livestock ventures through structured planning and access to funding.

Dr. Abubakar, who was represented by Madam Heathron Akanni, the Value Chain Consultant for L-PRES, stated that, “This initiative is about helping them navigate the business side of livestock farming—developing investment strategies in beef, dairy, and small ruminants.

“It opens pathways to single-digit loans and even export opportunities through proper branding and value addition,” he added.

He noted that the sessions are being held across the state’s three senatorial zones, using local dialects to enhance understanding.

Also speaking, Dr. Salisu Muhammad Inuwa, the Kano State Coordinator for L-PRES, said the training responds to the widespread practice of livestock rearing in both urban and rural areas.

However, he noted that many people engage in the activity without treating it as a business.

“You will find goats, sheep, or poultry in many homes, but most people don’t track costs or profits. This program bridges that gap,” he explained.

He added that one-third of the participants are women, while a majority are young people, adding that “They have been grouped and will receive tools such as grain processing machines to improve feed production.”

Dr. Bashir Sunusi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, who represented the State Commissioner for Agriculture, praised the program for aligning with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s broader vision to revitalize the agricultural sector and tackle unemployment.

“This initiative supports our wider plans, including the recruitment of over 1,000 youths for rural agricultural support and the construction of 11 dams, one of which holds up to 3.1 billion litres,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Sule Sale, L-PRES Value Chain and Market Linkage Officer, stressed that livestock farming, when treated as a business, can yield significant returns.

Sale stated that, “There are countless opportunities in meat and dairy production. With proper planning, participants can access loans and expand their enterprises.”

The training marks a major step toward improving productivity, resilience, and market access in Kano’s livestock industry under the L-PRES program.

By Uzair Adam

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf says his administration has fulfilled 85 per cent of the promises made to the people since assuming office, with just 15 per cent remaining as he begins the second half of his four-year tenure.

He made the declaration on Thursday in Kano during the swearing-in of his new Chief of Staff, Sulaiman Wali Sani; the Director General of the Special Services Directorate, Major General Sani Muhammad (rtd); and 11 newly appointed Special Advisers.

Speaking at the event, the governor said a recent internal assessment showed significant progress on his campaign agenda.

“I’m happy that last week, when I reviewed our polling points and campaign promises, I saw that we have executed 85% within two years,” Yusuf said. “What remains is 15%, and we still have about two years to complete it.”

He said the matter had been presented before the State Executive Council and assured the public that the remaining promises would be delivered in due time.

While assuring citizens of renewed efforts, Governor Yusuf said new initiatives would soon be introduced to further uplift the lives of Kano residents.

He stated, “We are bringing in new programmes and practices that will, by the grace of Allah SWT, positively impact the lives of the good people of the state. But we cannot do it alone—we must work together.”

He called on the newly sworn-in appointees to maintain transparency and accountability, urging them to offer sincere and constructive advice rather than conceal challenges.

“If there is any problem, don’t start investigating yourself or hiding it. Come straight and tell us what we need to know. That’s why you’re here,” Yusuf said.

The governor also reminded them of the weight of their responsibilities in managing public resources, urging caution and integrity.

“Ensure the judicious use of the limited resources entrusted to you by the people. You cannot afford to misstep,” he said.

Yusuf concluded by expressing confidence in the new officials, saying he was personally familiar with each of them and trusted their capabilities.

The appointments come as part of a broader strategy to reposition the administration for greater results in its second half, with emphasis on consolidating achievements and fulfilling the remaining pledges.

By Abdullahi Mukhtar Algasgaini

In a significant move to fulfill pre-election commitments and address long-standing welfare concerns, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the disbursement of over Six Billion Naira (₦6,000,000,000) to retired civil servants.

This marks the governor’s fourth major pension payment initiative since taking office.

Many beneficiaries had reportedly endured years without income or stable employment, with some battling illness or struggling to support dependents.

The state government stated that the funds offer “a beacon of new life and a foundation to rebuild dreams.

“Beyond the financial relief, the payment aims to formally recognize the retirees’ contributions and restore their sense of value after retiring “with integrity.”

Governor Yusuf’s administration framed the ₦6bn payout as evidence of prioritizing worker welfare, contrasting it with the perceived inaction of past governments.

“What others couldn’t achieve in eight years, we have accomplished in just two,” a government statement noted, positioning the fourth installment as proof that Governor Yusuf’s government “has not forgotten its contributors.”

The administration reaffirmed its pledge to continue supporting retirees and upholding social contracts with the people of Kano State.
