IDP raped by NGO official commits suicide

After allegedly being raped by an official of an International Non-Governmental Organization, Aisha Umar, a female Internally Displaced Person (IDP) in Borno State, took her life.

The victim, who was working menial tasks to make ends meet, was allegedly enticed to the suspect’s residence at 303 Housing Estate, near Dalori IDP camp in Maiduguri, on the pretence of cleaning it.

When she entered his flat, the suspect, Huzaif Adam, 35, was reported to have had forcible sexual intercourse with her.

The victim’s cries for aid drew neighbours to Adam’s flat, but he had already raped her, according to a source.

According to the source, the traumatized victim raced to Adam’s kitchen and picked up a knife, which she used to stab herself. She passed away at the hospital a short time afterwards.

The suspect was detained at Gwange Division of Borno Police Command after his arrest, according to a police officer who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. He was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The officer was quoted as saying: “We arrested the perpetrator but he has now been transferred to the SCID. His case file is in Gwange Divisional of Police.”

“I was contacted via my office and I called Commissioner of Sport after. The incident happened around our Area 303/202 EFCC area. I saw the perpetrator and interviewed him, and also saw the corpse of the innocent girl at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH). It’s a really sad incident; justice should be served.

“The girl was crying and quoted as saying, ‘Why would you do this to me?’ Instead of bringing shame to my parents after deflowering me, I rather die than go home.”

Islam speaks about everything, including environmental protection – Dr Bashir

The Imam of Al-Furqan Mosque of Nassarawa G.R.A, Kano, Sheikh Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar, said that during a lecture at the Faculty of Arts and Environmental Sciences, Bayero University, Kano, today, January 19, 2022. 

Dr Bashir lectured on “Islamic perspective on the drivers and ways to mitigate global environmental change”. He further explained the basis of maintaining environmental cleanliness as Muslims, citing Quranic verses and hadith. 

He said: “Islam asserts itself as a universal religion – through reaching people, geographical spheres and historical applicability.”

The former chairman of Kano State Council of Ulama, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, was among other scholars who attended the event. He also contributed to the seminar.

He added, “The upholding of environmental protection and maintenance of one’s environment leads to healthy wellbeing and sanity. On the other hand, a lack of environmental protection and maintenance leads to sickness, irrational thinking and poor focus by the people around such environment.”

The lecture was part of the Talking Environment Seminar Series organised by the Faculty periodically.

Osinbajo describes Sardauna as man of peace at memorial lecture

The Ahmadu Bello Memorial Leadership and Governance 2022 event hosted in Kano state government house earlier today was themed “Reviving the Northern Traditional Institutions: Imperative for Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria”. 


The Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation organized the event in collaboration with the Kano state government on January 18, 2022. 


During the occasion, Vice president Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) commended Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna, adding that “[He] was a man of peace and courage, as well as a nurturer of traditional institutions, who demonstrated fairness and justice.”


Concerning insecurity bedevilling the North, the Vice President said that the federal government would employ technology in surveillance to fight the increased terrorism and insurgency in the country effectively.


He said: “We will also continue to ensure collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Justice, state counterparts and law enforcement agencies – to ensure that those apprehended for terrorism and violent crimes are effectively and speedily prosecuted.”


“This is a fight for this nation, and we are determined to win by the grace of God. All these evil forces will be eliminated.”

Buhari to attend Gambian President’s inauguration

President Muhammadu Buhari sets to attend the second-term inauguration of his Gambian counterpart, Adama Barrow, on Wednesday.

In a statement by the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari will be hosted by the Gambian President alongside other African leaders as a Special Guest of Honour at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.

Garba Shehu noted that Buhari played a major role in the return of Gambia to democracy in 2017.

Part of the statement reads, “President Buhari along with other ECOWAS leaders, played a leading role in the restoration of democratic rule in The Gambia in 2017 after former President, Yahya Jammeh, refused to surrender power after losing the election.”

He added that the president is expected to be back to Nigeria at the end of the inauguration ceremonies.

Terrorist bandits kill 2 soldiers, one police officer, 13 civilians in Kebbi

At least 16 individuals were reported dead in a suspected bandits’ attack in Kebbi State’s Danko Wasagu Local Government Area on Friday.


Two soldiers, a police officer, and 13 people were murdered in the attack at Dankade village, according to the state’s police spokesperson, Nafi’u Abubakar.


The police spokeswoman further refuted reports on various news outlets that the incident resulted in 50 deaths.


Mr Abubakar, who confirmed the amount to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the incident happened on Friday at 3.00 p.m.


He claimed that suspected bandits from Zamfara infiltrated the community and terrorized civilians and security officers.


When the police patrol squads learned of the incursion, they mobilized to the village and engaged them in a gunfight, killing one of our officers and two army officers.


According to Mr Abubakar, the bandits also set fire to some homes.

EFCC arraigns lawyer for fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arraigns a female lawyer for money laundering.


The lawyer, identified as Anumati Stella Ojojevwe, was arraigned before Hon. Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Warri on Monday.
The EFCC disclosed this on their verified Facebook account.


According to the EFCC, ” Ojevwe was arraigned on a 14-count charge of money laundering. The defendant is alleged to have received the sum of 105, 000, 000 ( One Hundred and Five Million) from SA-FX Global Investment.”

I’ve confidence about my 2023 presidency ambition—Tinubu

Former Lagos State governor and leader of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has expressed his confidence that he would win the 2023 presidential election, noting that stakeholders’ reactions are behind his optimism of becoming the president.

Mr Tinubu stated this when he paid a visit yesterday to Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State.

Mr Tinubu was quoted as saying, “Life is a challenge, and you must be ready to confront challenges and overcome. I have the confidence that I will overcome any form of challenge.

“The reactions of critical stakeholders to my presidential ambition have been very positive, encouraging and overwhelming, and these have spurred me on with the strong conviction that we would succeed and emerge victorious after the election.

“We are forging ahead, and with the strong support of the masses of Nigerians, we are going to achieve a resounding victory.”

Recall that the APC leader had told President Muhammadu Buhari that he was interested in contesting for the office of the president come 2023.

Kogi Governor hosts Liberia’s Vice President to dinner in Abuja

The Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahya Bello, hosts the Vice President of Liberia, Dr Jewel Cianeh Taylor at his Abuja residence on Sunday. 


The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onogwu Muhammad, disclosed this in a Facebook post. 

According to him, the governor is in Abuja to attend the Progressive Governor’s forum meeting, which is to hold this evening.


He also noted that the governor attended a dinner organized by the female members of his administration in honour of Liberia’s Vice President.

Buhari, Osinbajo, others honour soldiers on Armed Forces Remembrance Day

President Muhammadu Buhari led the nation alongside the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the President of the Senate and others in marking the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Abuja.


The ceremony held in Abuja on Saturday is an annual event to honour and appreciate Nigeria’s living and fallen heroes.


The event involved the laying of wreaths at the National Arcade in Abuja. First to lay the wreath is usually the President, followed by the Vice President, the Senate President, Speaker, House of Representatives, Chief Justice of Nigeria and others. 


This tradition was duly observed by the President and the Vice president, and others in the usual manner.

Kano student emerges overall best, wins Gold Medal award in India

Kano State continues to mark its name in gold as its indigenes emerged best in different academic fields in national and foreign universities.

Engr. Yahaya Hassan Labaran, an indigene of Kano state from Kura local government, emerged as the overall best student for the 2020/2021 academic session with a CGPA of 9.9 out of 10, at prestigious Sharda University, India.

Engr. Yahaya graduated with first-class in Civil Engineering graduate of Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil, in 2017. He won a fully-funded scholarship to study Master of Technology in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Construction Management in India in 2019.

In addition to being the university’s overall best student, He also won a Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal award for securing the 1st position in the Master of Technology course at the School of Engineering.

Engr. Yahaya stands out to be the best among hundreds of students from different countries across the globe.

According to his sighted CV online, Yahaya has numerous publications to his name and membership in professional organizations such as the American Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and 11 others. In addition, he attended over 40 conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Apart from that, he has completed numerous professional courses at various universities worldwide, including the University of California, Irvine, Georgia Institute of Technology, IE Business School, and the University of Geneva, to name a few.
