Northern insecurity and politicisation of terror

By Tahir Ibrahim Tahir

It is no longer news that on December 7, 2021, 42 innocent travellers were gruesomely burnt in a bus as they moved through Gidan Bawa village of Sabon Birni local government of Sokoto state. Thirty-five died instantly, and seven survived with very severe burns. May Allah shower their souls with his mercy.

The attack is one of the most horrendous and inhumane acts of the bandits that have since visited Northwestern Nigeria with an orgy of violence. I believe this barbaric act accounts more for Sheikh Gumi excusing himself from speaking on behalf of the bandits than the reason he gave – citing their proclamation by law as terrorists. This heartless, baseless and demonic act of burning a fellow human being alive has laid bare the true nature of what Nigeria has been fighting for so many years.

Fighter jets bombarded many enclaves of the bandits, east of Dumburoum forest in Zurmi, Zamfara, and also in Sokoto and Kaduna states, as well as ISWAP locations in far away Borno state, a day before this inhuman slaughter at Gidan Bawa. It is evidently a reprisal attack and an inadvertent confirmation of the nexus between ISWAP, Boko haram and Bandits – the same hydra-headed terrorism monster.

It is no longer news that northerners are moaning beneath the anguish of the mayhem that these ‘organisations’ have visited upon their people – annihilating human lives like they were crickets. More lives are lost to terror, and there doesn’t seem to be a decline. A 100 lives are lost in a week sometimes. Northerners are increasingly livid over the fact that PMB is a northerner. As President, he ought to secure his northern constituency – letting their governors, legislators, service chiefs and other top government functionaries off the hook for the bizarre and profoundly depressing situation of the North.

It is no longer news that the FG has made massive investments in security, purchasing no less than 60 fighter jets (fighter helicopters, FJ-17s, Super-Tucano, M346 Italian jets) along with battle tanks, MWRAPS, TAVORS, Armored navy vessels, and sophisticated surveillance systems. Bases have been positioned throughout the length and breadth of the war theatre. More boots are on the ground than ever, most definitely more than the civil war. All air assets have been deployed in the North to fight terrorism. So what in God’s name could be the problem?

It is no longer news that the weaponisation of poverty, in the long term, especially in Northern Nigeria, is mainly responsible for the hell pit we’ve found ourselves in. We watched our leaders dig us in and did us in while we egged them on for as long as it favoured us. We genuflected before them, made them take bows, applauded them – and allowed them to go scot-free. The masses and the village dwellers suffered this weaponisation with years of untold hardship, weeping blood. In contrast, we, the elite and the city dwellers, enjoyed all the blood money and whatever elitist pleasures therein. Now the shoe shiner is wielding an AK-47, so is the Maiguard. The herdsman is a warlord, so is the Vectra driver an informant. One of the Northern universities’ security chiefs is a kidnap kingpin, and a Hajiya in the village is the supplier of thousands of rounds of ammunition to bandits. The questions bang your scalp like the heavy August rainfall; who is not a bandit, or a terrorist, or an informant, or a kingpin or some helper of a sort to these terrorists? The North is hardly an image of its once prestigious self, now hunched with woes and barely a shadow of its erstwhile esteem. The hypocrisy screams to the high heavens, muttering sulky and morose invectives at PMB alone as the bane of our problems. Indeed.

It is no longer news that a foreign journalist, in an article titled, “The bandit warlords of Nigeria”, navigated the nooks, crannies and alleyways of bandits in the North, unharmed by these demons; inadvertently betraying the conspiracy of banditry in the North. He waxed politics with the bandits, claiming OBJ and Jona are far better than PMB, who the bandits say stifles Islam! Lord have mercy on our souls. He also erroneously put Fulani bandits as conquest driven Islamic extremists. This faulty description only further lumps Boko haram and Bandits together.

The news headline that should be etched into our consciousness is the reality of Nigeria long being marked as a state for Balkanisation. A proxy war is being fought out with our homeland as the battlefield. Eastern merchants versus western warlords are slugging it out, punch for pound. Islamic North, its idealistic and archaic ways are a thorn in their meal. As they carve their diamonds clean, our population suffers the brunt of their steel.

What is left for us is the Sunna of the Prophet (SAW), backed by his hadith, describing the bigger Jihad as striving for one’s cleansing and towing the path of righteousness – backed by Q22:78. The strange situation in the North is the duty of every northerner to un-knot, un-tie, and crack. Prophet SAW was the last one, so we have to be messiahs unto ourselves.

We must encourage ourselves to eradicate this phenomenon that has become the new Yahoo or money bet of the North. We must expose ourselves and fight ourselves by ourselves. No war ends with a gunshot. It can only start it. So we must sit together, back-benchers, frontliners, warts and all, voodoo if you like – and do the needful. As our faith is in our hearts, so is our fate in our own hands.

Bandits storm Sokoto community, kill 3, injure several others

By Uzair Adam Imam

Three persons were killed by suspected bandits at Kurawa village in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state.

It was gathered that the attack took place a few hours after Governor Aminu Tambuwal left the area.

Tambuwal was said to have been in Sabon Birni to commiserate with the families of the travellers burnt to death by bandits along Sabon Birni-Isa road on Monday.

The Daily Reality gathered that the bandits raided the village around 8 pm on Thursday, shooting intermittently.

“They came during late-night prayer, shooting sporadically. They killed three of our people and injured several others who are currently in the hospital,” a resident said.

The attempt to hear from the spokesman of the Sokoto Police Command, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, was fruitless.

Social media condemnations trail Buhari’s delegation to Sokoto

By Sumayya Auwal Ishaq

President Muhammadu Buhari has come under attack for sending delegates to Sokoto, following the death of 42 passengers burnt by bandits in the state.

A Federal Government delegation, led by the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Munguno (Rtd), has been dispatched to Sokoto.

Other members of the delegation include the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, the Director-General of the DSS, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Samuel Adebayo.

On the president’s official Facebook handle, many Nigerians said the president had proven again and again that he was a man bereft of empathy for the people he governs.

The critics pointed out that that was not the first time the president was criticised for failing to visit victims of monumental tragedies, especially in northern Nigeria, where Boko Haram, armed bandits, among other criminals, operate.

Take COVID-19 vaccine – CITAD

Muhammad Sabiu

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has urged people to try as much as possible to get vaccinated against coronavirus, especially “at a time when Omicron variant is surfacing.”

This was disclosed by the group’s project manager, Hamza Ibrahim, during a press conference held on December 8, 2021, in Kano.

The enlightenment exercise is part of the group’s project, tagged “Public Education on COVID Vaccine.”

Lamenting how people reject the vaccine, CITAD said, “There are misconceptions and conspiracy theories around the vaccine that some government officials in the state have which has also been a serious problem to getting people vaccinated, this has not only demoralized many people, but it has also reinforced their disbelief and rejection of the vaccine.”

Mr Ibrahim raised the alarm that despite the negative impact the pandemic has on the country, only 3% of Nigerians are vaccinated, adding that this is disturbing at a moment when Omicron has emerged.

He strongly advised all unvaccinated Nigerians to, as a matter of urgency, quickly go and take the vaccine, adding that authorities concerned should do everything possible to enlighten the public on the misconceptions making the rounds about the vaccine.

“We urge stakeholders and opinion leaders in Plateau state to work together to address misconception theories on COVID and its vaccination as well as enlighten the public on the relevance of the vaccine.”

“We plead to authorities in Borno state to ensure the provision of sufficient seals to the vaccination spots and motivate vaccination staff by paying their allowances.”

“We advise people to disregard fake narratives around the vaccine as the narratives were not scientifically proven. Reputable health agencies have confirmed the efficiency of the vaccine as such people should disregard the rumours,” he said.

President Buhari, others shun Sokoto tragedy, attend Akande’s book launch

By Sumayya Auwal Ishaq

President Buhari’s attendance is drawing condemnation from Nigerians who questioned his absence in Sokoto to commiserate with the families of the deceased and his perceived lack of empathy.

Sokoto Massacre: Presidency under fire for 48 hours silence

By Uzair Adam Imam and Muhammadu Sabiu

The Nigerian presidency has been criticised for failing to immediately offer its condolences to the families of the travellers from Sokoto State who were burnt to ashes by terrorists.

Reports have indicated that the bandits set a vehicle conveying no fewer than 42 passengers ablaze in Sokoto, northwestern part of the country.

What kept the presidency mute after the merciless killing surprised many people, who criticised the government for showing indifference to such a horrible incident.

The Daily Reality learnt that the merciless killing took place on Monday around 09:00 in the morning but was reported Tuesday due to some technical issues.

The security threat of this sort is one of the lingering issues that rock the northern region of the country and succeeded in turning it into a killing field. Scores of people are killed every day, and nothing tangible is seen from the people of authority.

An eyewitness confirmed the incident, saying: “The car which was transiting passengers from Sabon Birni was set ablaze at Gida Village, a few kilometres away.”

According to our source: “I was called when the incident was happening. My uncle, his wives and their four children were some of those that have been killed in the bus.”

Before the presidency mourned, the residents of Sokoto State have been voicing their complaints bitterly, saying that why should the president keep mute on such a brutal massacre of innocent travellers? According to them, this is a national tragedy that deserves national mourning.

Mu’azu Malami lamented that: “It is unfortunate and heartbreaking to have read what had happened to our brothers on Monday. This has indicated that there is a need for the government to do more to ensure the safety of its citizens. And I don’t buy the idea of banning vigilante groups in the state,” he added.

Before the presidency released its condolence statement, he lamented that: “Up to now, there has been no official condolence from the government.”

Chairman Arewa Media Forum, Comrade Abubakar Dahiru, in an interview with our reporter, lamented that: “Neither did the government mourn anyone nor did it take any action.

“In addition to that, the government has even banned the vigilante group in the state despite their tremendous contribution,” he added.

Abubakar Mande said that: “The incident is very sad, and the lives of people are no longer taken as important. As we are mourning this loss, another bad one will occur again. It goes on again and again as it is becoming normal.

“But the silence of the government not to comment about the issue comes to us with great shock,” Mande added.

Also, many social media users from Northern Nigerian aired their grievances over the delay by the presidential media team to offer their condolences, which they did 48 hours after the incident.

Sokoto massacre: A good time to pounce on the “bandits”

By Adamu Bello Mai-Bodi

The insistently repetitive activities of killer-bandits, who should now be clearly termed as “the most merciless terrorists” in the Northwestern part of Nigeria have been the source of anguish for the innocent dwellers of that region and travellers alike. Banditry has been a thorn-in-the-flesh of the Buhari administration ever since it started. Despite the government’s massive investment in that area, the banditry problem looks insurmountable to both the government and the community vigilantes. The perpetrators continue to unleash mayhem on helpless citizens. They mercilessly murder, rape, steal, kidnap and destroy the properties and farmlands of their unsuspecting victims with impunity.

“Terrorism is a dead-end street,” Pope Francis famously warned. The bandits in Nigeria have reached the end of a cul-de-sac on which they have been travelling, with just a slim chance of surviving any counter-offensive devised against them. Due to the fact that the dry season has arrived and the clearing of the bushes that serve as hideouts for bandits terrorizing towns in sections of the North has begun, these terrorists are attempting to explore a  cease-fire option with the beleaguered people, as disclosed by the Daily Trust.

There has never been a better time for the Nigerian military to strike and send these terrorists to the gallows than now. The fact that the gunmen are revealing their fragility and fear is a good omen. The federal government must not let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pass them by. Needless to say, restoring security is one of the APC-led government’s top priorities. The killer-bandits have been ridiculing the government’s determination to keep this vital promise of preserving Nigerian residents’ lives and property. Now is the moment for the military to retaliate and rid the country of these unscrupulous elements.

Local communities should be prevented from holding any peace talks with these heartless assailants because they will go back to the trenches at their convenience, especially during the rainy season when the bushy areas of the forest are dense. Therefore, it is time for a collective effort by our security architecture and the communities involved to ensure these killers meet their waterloo.

Another reason for them to be crushed to the end is the manifestation of their new evil agenda which leaves no one in doubt that all they need is complete destruction of Arewa. Looking critically at the recent merciless killing at Sabon Birni in Sokoto State, one would wonder, what do these terrorists need? What have the innocent travellers done wrong to them? The answer is, they are killers and they are all out to kill. Nigerian government should know that these terrorists need to be annihilated, otherwise they will continue to destroy Arewa to its final end.

By Sumayyah Auwal Ishaq
