The Ulama Forum in Nigeria has condemned what it describes as false and inflammatory allegations by some international media outlets, including Fox News, Radio Genoa and American talk show host Bill Maher, claiming that 500,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria last year.

In a statement signed by Convener Aminu Inuwa Muhammad and Secretary Engr. Basheer Adamu Aliyu, the Forum described the claims as “entirely unfounded, reckless, and designed to misinform the international community.” 

It added that Nigeria’s security challenges—terrorism, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes—affect both Muslims and Christians, not any single religious group.

The Forum noted that Muslim communities, particularly in the Northwest, have “suffered disproportionately,” with thousands killed in repeated attacks ignored by international coverage. It warned that spreading false genocide narratives could inflame tensions and undermine peace efforts.

Quoting the Qur’an, the Forum reaffirmed Islam’s prohibition of killing innocents and called for unity among Nigerians “to resist attempts by foreign actors to manipulate false narratives.” 

It also urged the government to intensify security measures and advised international media to report responsibly and respect Nigeria’s diversity.

The Ulama Forum in Nigeria has condemned the reported Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and the State of Israel on security cooperation, describing it as “a dangerous and insensitive diplomatic move.”

In a statement signed by its Convener, Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, and Secretary, Engr. Basheer Adamu Aliyu, the Forum accused the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, of unilaterally engaging Israel despite global outrage over its alleged genocide against Palestinians.

“At a time when the world of conscience is against Israel, Nigeria should be at the forefront of supporting South Africa’s genocide case at the International Court of Justice, not courting a state increasingly isolated for human rights violations,” the statement read.

The Forum warned that involving Israel in Nigeria’s internal security would erode national sovereignty, risk human rights abuses, and entrench dependence on foreign powers. It argued that “internal security issues require homegrown solutions that prioritise community engagement, social cohesion, and inclusive governance.”

Instead of seeking external assistance, the group urged the government to strengthen security institutions, address poverty and corruption, and ensure justice for offenders. It further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “call the erring minister to order” in the interest of national unity and public sensitivity.

The Forum reaffirmed its confidence in Nigeria’s security personnel and pledged continued prayers for “Allah’s guidance and support to our gallant forces.”

The Ulama Forum in Nigeria has expressed strong opposition to the proposed Nigeria Tax Bill (NTB) 2024 and Nigeria Tax Administration Bill (NTAB) 2024, currently before the National Assembly. 

In a joint statement signed by its Convener, Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, and Secretary, Engr. Basheer Adamu Aliyu, on Monday, the forum raised concerns about the bill’s implications on equity, federalism, and economic fairness.  

The statement criticized the bills for transferring the largest share of Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue from consumption or generation areas to states hosting production entities’ headquarters. 

“VAT is a consumption tax. Transferring its revenue from the areas where it is generated to the locations of head offices undermines fiscal equalization, widens income disparity, and risks social disharmony,” the forum said.  

The forum also noted that the bills threaten the survival of critical agencies such as TETFUND, NITDA, and NASENI by proposing a gradual reduction in their funding through the Development Levy. 

“Phasing out these agencies will jeopardize infrastructure, research, and capacity-building efforts in our tertiary institutions, leaving students to bear exorbitant tuition fees under an ill-conceived student loan scheme,” the statement warned.  

The forum accused the government of rushing the bills without sufficient public scrutiny, alleging that they align with a long-term reform agenda by international financial institutions such as the World Bank and IMF. 

“There is room to suspect that these bills are part of the World Bank’s 10 to 15-year reform agenda, threatening our sovereign independence,” the forum alleged.  

To address these issues, the Ulama Forum urged the National Economic Council and State Governors to intervene and demand a thorough review. 

“The concerns of state governors and other stakeholders must be addressed to give these bills credibility and avoid perceptions of external imposition,” it added.  

The forum recommended that the bills be subjected to extensive public debate and expert analysis to ensure they align with Nigeria’s federal structure and national interest. 

It called on members of the National Assembly to act in the best interests of their constituencies and resist any pressure to pass the bills in their current form.  

“We urge public-spirited individuals and organizations to rise against this threat to fair and even development. The VAT-sharing formula and the proposed bills strike at the heart of federal constitutionalism,” the forum concluded.  

The Ulama Forum emphasized the need for justice and fairness, calling for the bill’s withdrawal to allow for broader discourse and a national consensus.

The Ulama Forum in Nigeria is greatly concerned and saddened over the perpetual killings of innocent lives going on unabated in Nigeria, especially in the North West of the country in recent times.

The forum disclosed this in its press release signed by its secretary, Engr. Basheer Adamu Aliyu, on Monday, December 13, 2021, and sent to The Daily Reality today, Thursday, December 16, 2021.

The statement reads: “Our hearts bleed over the dastardly and inhuman act of burning alive of 23 passengers in Sokoto state. Other equally sad losses of lives that were witnessed in Niger, Kaduna, Zamfara and Katsina states over the last one week are heart touching, frustrating and to say the least unpardonable. It is highly inconceivable how bandits and terrorists move about freely in the land, committing heinous acts and atrocities unchecked by the power of government and its security agencies.”

“The terrorists have desecrated all religious, human and universal values and indeed, they have lost their faith and humanity; they must be confronted head-on with might and power. We most strongly urge the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to sit up to its responsibility of protecting the lives of Nigerian citizens. It would be recalled that in the year 2020, out of similar concern over the deteriorating trend of insecurity, the Ulama Forum had advanced nearly a dozen suggestions to the governments at all levels so as to curb the Boko Haram menace, banditry and other security challenges facing the Northern region.”

“It is sad to note that most of our suggestions were ignored and security situation in the country has been moving from bad to worse,” the Forum lamented.

“Based on the foregoing, we would like to once more urge the FGN to re-assess its security strategies and spending with a view to unfolding a more holistic and all-inclusive approach. We believe that divine intervention is a most potent weapon against the bandits, insurgents and their collaborators.”

“To this end, members of the Forum have resolved to devote themselves to alqunut (special prayer in times of turmoil) during each prayer session. Similarly, special prayers should be observed in Madaaris (Islamiyyah Schools) and other places of gathering.”

“We pray to Allah to give our leaders the listening ears to hear the cries of its weak, terrorised and terrified citizens, particularly in the North. May they have the wisdom, will, determination and ability to do the needful and ensure peace and security in the land. There is no power or strength save in Allah,” it concluded.
