Al-Istiqama VC commends The Daily Reality for exceptional support

The Vice-Chancellor of Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Professor Salisu Shehu, has commended The Daily Reality team for their outstanding support toward the university.

Prof. Shehu noted that the online newspaper has offered remarkable support to the institution since its establishment in 2022, with numerous reports about the university featured prominently on its platform.

The Vice-Chancellor spoke during a seminar titled “The Pervasiveness of Sports Betting (Online Gambling) Among Undergraduate Students in Nigerian Universities.”

The event, organized in honour of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria Day, featured The Daily Reality’s editor, Malam Aisar Fagge, as the lead speaker.

“Malam Aisar Fagge is a renowned figure on social media, and most of you see his posts on Facebook. He’s a teacher-journalist. He teaches journalism and practices it. They are the publishers of The Daily Reality [online newspaper]. The media has carried and shared a lot of information about Al-Istiqama University and has publicized us widely. May Allah bless them,” said Prof. Shehu.

In response, Malam Aisar Fagge expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for his dedication to advancing the university.

He said, “I am thrilled by the positive changes I’ve seen in this university. The progress is impressive. The university got the leadership it deserves.”

The menace of job racketeering in Nigeria

Recently, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across a post by Dr. Muhsin Ibrahim, a lecturer and editor of The Daily Reality. He wrote, “We need to address the issue of buying and selling job offers in Nigeria. It’s disheartening that we no longer condemn this corrupt practice; it’s becoming normalised.” His words hit home, reminding me of my own experience.

A day after graduating from Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, a familiar acquaintance, approached me and asked, “Now that you’ve graduated, what’s next?” I replied, “NYSC and then maybe looking for a job.” He chuckled and said, “Nigeria is now about who you know or what you have in your pocket. I can help you get a job, but it’ll cost you.” Shocked, I asked, “Where would I get that kind of money?” and walked away, disturbed.

This encounter and Dr. Muhsin’s post made me recall Jibrin, a man I knew in Gombe State. He fell prey to one of these “pay-for-a-job” schemes. Desperate, he sold his house for far below its value to pay the fee, only to end up with neither the job nor the house. Jibrin’s case is sadly not unique. Countless others have been conned by job scammers who vanish, leaving their victims penniless.

The growing prevalence of job trading in Nigeria is alarming. It undermines merit, creating a system where people secure jobs based on connections and bribes rather than qualifications. Deserving candidates are sidelined, while unqualified individuals fill critical roles. This feeds a cycle of corruption, further deepening economic inequality and breeding frustration among the youth.

What is even more troubling is the normalisation of this practice. Instead of condemning the outright sale of jobs, society seems to have accepted it as a new reality. Many young people now believe that they stand no chance in Nigeria’s job market without money or connections. This erodes confidence in a fair system, where hard work and qualifications should decide securing employment.

To tackle this issue, the media needs to lead the charge by highlighting the perils of job trading. The negative impact of this corrupt practice should be exposed through investigative journalism, public debates, and social media campaigns. However, raising awareness alone is not enough. Nigeria needs stronger recruitment regulations, where organisations are held accountable for corrupt hiring practices.

Whistleblowing must be encouraged, and safe and anonymous channels must be provided for reporting job scammers. If potential whistleblowers fear retribution or harassment, they will unlikely come forward, leaving corruption unchecked. The government must establish legal protections and incentives for those who help expose corrupt recruitment activities.

Government agencies and private firms must also ensure transparency in their hiring processes. Job openings should be advertised on official websites with detailed selection criteria. Recruitment processes should be publicised, and there should be clear communication with candidates regarding the status of their applications. This would make it more difficult for corrupt individuals to infiltrate the system and sell job offers.

Civil society organisations and advocacy groups also have a crucial role to play. They can organise awareness campaigns, engage with policymakers, and help victims of job scams seek justice. These groups can push for necessary reforms and create public forums where citizens can voice their concerns.

As individuals, we have a responsibility to reject this corrupt system. We must resist the temptation to pay for jobs, recognising that such actions perpetuate inequality and injustice. By speaking out against job trading and advocating for merit-based recruitment, we contribute to building a more just society. If job seekers refuse to participate in corrupt practices, it will weaken the power of those profiting from them.

In conclusion, job trading is a serious issue in Nigeria, eroding the values of merit and fairness. It is a dangerous practice that widens the gap between the haves and have-nots, promoting a culture of entitlement and greed. This trend needs urgent attention from all sectors of society. Nigeria can combat this corrosive practice through collective action, transparency, and strong legal frameworks and build a future where merit truly matters. It’s time for a change, and the fight starts with each of us.

Welcome to 2024 – the Digital Age!

People often frown at the content generated using AI. And I believe there is another set of people who copy and paste content generated by AI without any consideration or editing. Perhaps, the former group relies on the latter to pass their judgment. But I think both groups misuse and misunderstand the idea, they misuse AI and pass their opinions subjectively. Both fail to understand that AI is here not to do the actual work but to help us do it better.

Literally, intelligence refers to the capacity to understand principles, facts or meanings and apply it to practice. On the other hand, artificial implies something not natural to the human world, and not normal to certain principles or conditions. Put the two together you will have a complete clear picture of what AI is.

As a domain, Artificial Intelligence or AI, is a branch of computer science that aims to create machines capable of “thinking” and “acting” intelligently, much like humans. This could encompass various forms of intelligence, such as linguistic, biological and mathematical intelligence.

AI is a byproduct of human intelligence. It’s a human construct with limited and subjective experiences. It’s like a mirror reflecting our cognitive abilities. AI’s intelligence, designed to mimic our thought processes and actions, is a derivative of human intelligence. AI is currently available in various forms. The one we are most familiar with is ChatGPT. There are also thousands of machines in numerous industries doing remarkable jobs.

One of the key differences between AI and humans is predictability. AI is predictable as it operates based on pre-defined patterns subject to human manipulation. In contrast, we humans are unpredictable. We’re capable of creativity and spontaneity. We assume personality traits and express emotions. Human power is inimitable!

For instance, AI can recognise images of a cat but can never “feel or understand” what a cat is in reality because it doesn’t possess a mind of its own. AI can tell you the weather condition of your location, whether it’s cold, hot, sunny, hazy or raining without feeling any. It does not have feelings but can express them.

However, another striking difference between AI and humans is ‘Consciousness’. AI can neither assume nor replicate human consciousness. AI strictly operates based on algorithms designed by humans. The greater the data input the bigger the data output, and vice versa.
There’s a common misconception or fear that AI will replace us and render us jobless. But that’s far from the truth. AI was primarily created to complement our abilities. It’s a tool designed to help us do our jobs more efficiently and effectively, to enhance our skills, and to unearth and explore our hidden talents. AI is NOT here to do the work for us, but rather to teach us how to do the work faster, better and smarter.

Artificial Intelligence is not mere a trend. It’s a constant human companion like dogs and cats that will remain useful and loyal to humans as long as humanity stands. As we steadily navigate through the Digital Age, understanding AI is no longer a choice but a necessity. It’s crucial to know, learn and utilise the power of AI for productivity.

Sometimes, change can be difficult to cope with. But resisting change means missing out the opportunities that come along with it. Instead of viewing AI as a threat, we should embrace it as a tool for improvement, a lifelong companion that’s here to make our lives better.

Importance of health insurance to Nigerians

I wrote about using out-of-pocket money to pay for healthcare in Nigeria a few days ago, which pushes people into poverty. Coincidentally, BBC Hausa had a report on it this morning. The Daily Reality also published an opinion article about it (I shared it earlier).

Most countries of the world have health insurance. It’s, in fact, a necessary requirement to stay in those countries. Why are we doing things differently and wrongly in Nigeria? Less than 10 per cent of Nigerians have health insurance today.

It is undeniable that sickness can strike us at any moment, irrespective of our financial standing. In such a situation, insurance comes to your rescue. Many insurances don’t cover all expenses, but often, they reduce them. So, if some good companies offer such a service, join them.

In all this, governments at all levels have to come in. They should make health insurance mandatory for everyone. Often, the monthly contributions are affordable. Even if you don’t get sick often, it’s important to remember that you are not immune to illness.

I also believe it’s halal to subscribe to the health insurance scheme. Yes, I am not a religious scholar. However, based on some rulings that I am familiar with, it’s not haram to do so.

May Allah guide and provide us with more, amin.

Fact-check figures to change narratives smearing Northern Nigeria, Don tells journalists

A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero University, Kano, Dr Ibrahim Siraj Adhama, has urged journalists to fact-check figures to change the narratives by the media that paint Northern Nigeria black. 

Adhama stated this at a One-Day Workshop for Early-Career Journalists on Reporting Northern Nigeria, Fake News and Journalism Ethics organized by a Kano-based online media organization, The Daily Reality. 

The workshop, which was held at Bayero University, Kano, was organized by the management team of The Daily Reality Newspaper to groom journalists in Northern Nigeria on reporting.

He said our northern reporters should have apparatuses to re-examine statistics by the World Bank and IMF, among others, before reporting them for public consumption. 

Adhama, who spoke on “Issues in Reporting Northern Nigeria: A Framing/Agenda Setting Perspective, said the north was represented in media as economically and educationally backward with a high number of out-of-school children. 

He said, “We need to stop swallowing statistics about us. Most of these statistics by the World Bank, IMF, etc., will never favour us. 

“Thus, we should have an apparatus to re-examine them before reporting them,” he added.

Speaking on how those reports affect Hausa-Muslim northerners and, by extension, other ethnic groups, Adhama maintained that all the things we read about us in the Southern media were in themselves, despite claiming objectivity, subjective.

The role of a writer, first off, is to inform: A response to Rabiu Jibril’s letter to Prof. Farooq Kperogi

On January 22, 2022, a seemingly terse letter by one Muhammad Rabiu Jibril to the perennial critic of Nigeria’s asphyxiating political system and its enablers was published by The Daily Reality, an online news medium headquartered in Kano. In the letter, Bashir writes about Kperogi’s consistent verbal umbrage at Nigeria’s geriatric political stagers and asks him to recommend a candidate for Nigerians in the 2023 elections. Bashir implicitly hints that faulting our leaders alone won’t suffice. More worryingly, several people who commented on the letter challenge Kperogi to, in lieu of writing belligerent, “big grammar” articles to condemn all the candidates currently available for Nigerians to pick from in 2023, come out and participate in the laborious task of choosing a leader for Nigerians during elections. That, to me, seems ignorant at best and unwarranted at worst. Here is why.

We need to understand that political participation is in layers. In other words, our involvement in politics, as significant as it is, can take various forms. Some of these include voting during elections, participating in mature political campaigns, conducting political sensitisations especially in places far removed from the mainstream politics, holding political positions, donating money to a political cause (in the interest of collective prosperity), participating in meetings that keep citizens close to their leaders and blogging writing about political happenings.

It’s unarguable that Prof. Farooq Kperogi is renowned for one or all of the above. As a dyed-in-the-wool political commentator and justice advocate, he writes consistently about political issues. His writing has propelled many public decisions that have shaped the country’s economic, social, cultural and political trajectories. His weekly political columns are devoted to critically analysing the myriad of sociopolitical issues bedevilling Nigeria in the last three decades or more. For me, this is a heavier role to assume by someone who, despite not being directly affected by several political diseases in the country, takes his country’s progress as a priority.

The fact that Kperogi has taken it upon himself to right the wrongs of the monsters in power by exposing their egregiously corrupt practices, not minding the consequences, should be enough for us to know that he wants the best for the country.

Ngugi wa Thiong’o, the Kenyan man of letters, aptly reminds us about the responsibility of a writer in his essay “Writers in Politics: The Power of Words and the Words of Power” when he argues that writers in politics operate within complex forces. He refers to them as people who risk many things to create a befittingly just world. One of the paragraphs in the strongly-worded essay is worth quoting here:

“He (writer) must reject, repudiate and negate his roots in the native bourgeoisie and its spokesmen, and finds his true creative links with the pan-African masses over the earth in alliance with all the socialistic forces of the world. He must, of course, be very particular, very involved in a grain of sand, but must also see the world past, present, and future in that grain. He must write with all the vibrations and tremors of the struggles of the working people in Africa…behind him. Yes, his work must show commitment, not to abstract notions of justice and peace, but the actual struggle of African peoples…and be in position to lay the only correct basis for real peace and real justice”.

In all fairness to Prof. Farooq Kperogi, his writing has always been within the prism of the above-identified responsibilities of writers, especially those who are caught up in the terrible sociopolitical conditions of countries like Nigeria. Nigeria is plagued by existential problems, including bad leadership, mass ignorance, and smelling regional biases exemplified in people’s attitudes toward the establishment and others. Therefore, for anything, any writer that informs their people and unrelentingly writes to challenge the status quo by giving the blueprint for emancipation and genuine leadership, which Nigeria truly needs, doesn’t deserve ill-founded condemnation.

This is not to argue that Prof. Kperogi’s political essays are watertight recommendations; it’s hard to discredit the courage and foresight his work forges for concerned Nigerians. Perhaps, this is what Breyten Breytenbach means in his polemical essay titled “The Writer and Responsibility” when he says, “a writer, any writer, to my mind has at least two tasks, sometimes overlapping; he is the questioner and the implacable critic of the mores and attitudes and myths of his society, but he is also the exponent of the aspirations of his people”.

Those who have commented on Jibril’s letter by calling Prof. Kperogi out should know that it takes massive grit to do what he is doing. They should know that his writing is really helpful. Even though he is not in Nigeria, he is doing what many Nigerians who are direct victims of the mess the country is enmeshed in can’t or fail to do. Of course, many scholars in Nigeria should have taken it upon themselves to inform the public through writing and go against the grain in the interest of a better Nigeria.

I would end this essay this way: Voting during elections isn’t the only way to participate in politics. Before voting, voters need to have the required knowledge of the process and understand the qualities a responsible political aspirant should possess. They must also come to terms with the power dynamics in the country and know who is fit to say this and that on their behalf. This is the leitmotif in Kperogi’s writing. So, before launching baseless ad hominem digs at a patriotic Nigerian who is voluntarily doing his part to fight for a country we can all cherish, we should understand that the role of a writer, first and foremost, is to inform. And that is exactly what Prof. Kperogi is doing.

For the good of the North

The misrepresentation of northern Nigeria ranges from distorting and falsifying reality, profiling, underreporting, and not reporting about the region by media outlets owned and controlled by others. Apparent and alarming as this is, it has been going on for a long time. This requires no evidence or justification; it is a growing trend, especially when the country propagates alienation over harmony. But who cares? Even those who have the responsibility to do so are busily aggrandising their powers.

But how long it will take the sick region to learn from this great proverb: Until the lion has a historian, the story of the hunt will always favour the hunter. The North was painted black with negative phrases, tales of violence, poverty, unemployment, irresponsible marriages, out-of-school children and whatnot as if there were no other positive realities.

John Campbell attests to the above mischaracterisation in his book, Nigeria: Dancing on the Brink, that “The Nigerian media, mostly headquartered in the Southern part of the country, is routinely insensitive and simplistic in its reportage about Northern Nigeria. And it is the Nigerian media that colors the too-often superficial Western view of the North.” This has a significant effect on the economic decline in the North as no investor will invest in the region that is dangerous, volatile and unpromising.

Apart from the traditional cores of mass communication, which include informing, educating, and entertaining, it is also used for propaganda to gain support or sympathy from the public or authority. EndSARS saga is an indicator of the power of propaganda, for it taught the north a lesson that “Dokin mai baki ya fi gudu” – the South has a much louder voice. Please don’t confuse my lamenting with Afghanistanism (a term used in journalism to describe journalists who shun the problem of their community but go extra-mile in condemning others), far from it. I suggest North should define itself and tell its version of the story; represent itself properly as bias in the news is often backgrounded. Others could not define us nor report us properly. 

Traditional rulers, political leaders, scholars, and concerned people in Northern Nigeria should speedily and strategically address this problem of bad press and misrepresentation of the North through investing in the media and utilising it for the good of their people. With Daily Nigerian, Sahelian Times, Nigerian Tracker and recently The Daily Reality (TDR), we need to see more outlets so we can ship our information without thinking about sinking. Recently, TDR’s publications have changed the North’s fate. Remember CBN and the reopening of the NIRSAL site, Netflix and the Kannywood, etc.

‘North needs the likes of The Daily Reality’ — Com. Muhammad Garba

Being the only non-profit oriented media organisation focusing primarily on issues and problems bedevilling northern Nigeria, The Daily Reality is a dream comes true.

During a courtesy call by The Daily Reality newspaper members to the Kano State Commissioner of Information, Hon. Muhammad Garba, in his office on Wednesday, 13th July 2021, the commissioner expressed his happiness, adding that:

“The concept of The Daily Reality is very commendable. We really appreciate your effort. This shows that you know what is happening [in this country and beyond]. The only thing we can add is to pray to Almighty Allah to sustain your effort. Honestly speaking, every person who is abreast with what is happening in Nigeria knows about this gap you come to bridge. Media shouldn’t be seen as the sole affair of politicians. It is for all. You can invest in the media not just to make money but also to protect your people, your business, ideology or to champion a certain cause like this thing you are doing. Of course, the media business is challenging. It takes time before it yields the desired result. This is why our people (Northerners) prefer such businesses they will invest today and harvest [profit] tomorrow.”

Recalling the challenges he faced in convincing Northern politicians, business moguls and other influential personalities to invest in media, Hon. Garba narrated that:

“When I was the president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), these were the issues I kept presenting to our leaders, but unfortunately, some of them thought that media investment is for Southerners alone. I visited many politicians, business people and elder statesmen, but they dumped me. Until today, our people don’t understand the power of media and the danger of living without media protection. Sadly, every month, many state governments and business tycoons in the North pay some media giants in the South huge money to support their programmes, businesses and give them favourable coverage. Yet, they criticise and condemn some of their actions. Though that is the duty of the press. Now, where is our New Nigerian? Who failed New Nigerian? Therefore, I urge you to expand your activities to other states. Be objective, fair, neutral and avoid politicising issues. The North needs your help. Our people need your help. We will give you the necessary support,” said Hon. Commissioner.
