Court rules in favour of Sanusi, prohibits deposed emirs from using royal titles

By Sabiu Abdullahi

The High Court in Kano State has issued a permanent injunction in favour of Emir Sanusi, prohibiting the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four other former Emirs from parading themselves as Emirs.

The ruling explicitly states that the former Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, along with their employees and representatives, are forbidden from portraying themselves as Emirs.

This decision comes after the Kano State government took legal action to prevent the deposed emirs from using their royal titles and residing in their palaces.

The government had earlier issued a 48-hour notice for the emirs to vacate their palaces following their deposition.

With this ruling, the court has reinforced the government’s stance, solidifying Emir Sanusi’s position as the rightful Emir of Kano.

The ruling is going to take another dimension in the ongoing dispute over the Emirship of Kano, and it is expected to bring clarity and stability to the traditional institution in the state.

JUST IN: Emir Sanusi holds Sallah Durbar in Kano despite police ban

By Uzair Adam Imam

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, has held a Sallah durbar in Kano, defying a police ban on the event.

The durbar was held after the Emir led Eid prayers and a sermon at the Kofar Mata Jumu’at mosque.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other officials attended the prayers and durbar, which was held despite heavy rain flooding the usual Eid grounds.

The police ban had been criticized by the Governor, who argued that he had not been consulted as the Chief Security Officer of the State.

Meanwhile, the 15th Fulani Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, observed his Eid prayer at the Nasarawa mini palace, as earlier announced.

The event was marked by the traditional durbar procession, which was held despite the police ban.

The durbar was a significant event in Kano, with many residents attending to celebrate the Eid festival.

Police in Kano vow to enforce court order that stops Sanusi’s reinstatement

By Sabiu Abdullahi

The Kano State Police Command has announced its commitment to upholding a federal court order that prohibits the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano.

In a press briefing held at the Bompai command headquarters on Saturday, Commissioner of Police Usaini Gumel assured that the command and its sister agencies would ensure peace and stability in the state, warning that anyone attempting to incite violence or disrupt public order would be dealt with decisively.

The court order, granted by Justice A.M. Liman of the Federal High Court on Thursday night, restrains the Kano State Government from reinstating Emir Sanusi II, who was deposed in March 2020.

The order was issued despite Justice Liman’s reported absence from the country, currently being in the United States.

The case was filed by Aminu Babba-Dan’Agundi, a traditional title holder, and Sarkin Dawaki Babba, who sought the court’s intervention to prevent the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi II.

The police command’s vow to enforce the court order comes amidst heightened tensions in the state, with many fearing a potential outbreak of violence over the emirate dispute.

Commissioner Gumel’s warning serves as a clear message to those who may attempt to disrupt the peace, stating the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in Kano State.

As the situation continues to unfold, residents and observers alike are closely watching the developments, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the emirate tussle.
