Nigerian striker Osimhen reportedly agrees personal terms with Man United

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, has reportedly reached a personal agreement with Manchester United ahead of a possible summer transfer, according to Turkish journalist Serdar Çelikler.

“Victor Osimhen has reached an agreement with Manchester United. But there is also the club side of the matter,” Çelikler said while speaking on a podcast.

Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray, has been in remarkable form this season.

He has scored 29 goals and made six assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Manchester United are believed to be prioritizing the signing of a top striker, especially with Rasmus Hojlund’s underwhelming performance in the current campaign.

The Danish striker has only scored three Premier League goals, and new manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen to offload him at the end of the season.

Although Osimhen is said to have agreed to personal terms with United, negotiations between the English club and Napoli regarding a transfer fee are still underway.

Osimhen’s release clause is reportedly set at €75 million (£63 million), but there are suggestions that Napoli may lower the asking price for United.

Juventus, another long-time admirer of the Nigerian star, remain interested.

However, Napoli are unwilling to strengthen a direct domestic rival, which could give United the advantage in securing his signature.

Reports also indicate that Osimhen is eager to play in the UEFA Champions League next season, making United’s qualification crucial to finalizing the deal.

In case the move fails, United have other options in mind, including Liam Delap and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Earlier, Turkish journalist Ali Naci Küçük revealed that Manchester United had offered Osimhen a weekly wage of £660,000 before tax, which would make him the highest-paid player at the club.

“There is a high possibility that Osimhen will say goodbye (to Galatasaray), but there is no decision made at the moment,” Küçük said. “Juventus and Manchester United clearly want Osimhen. Juventus and Manchester’s offer is a net €20m (£660,000-a-week).”Although Galatasaray would like to keep Osimhen, the club may not be able to meet his financial expectations. He is said to have demanded €15 million in wages from the Turkish side.

“Osimhen’s words do not mean that he will leave,” Galatasaray’s vice-president Ibrahim Hatipoglu said recently.

“He said that Galatasaray will always be in his heart even if he leaves in the worst-case scenario, but he did not say that he would leave. We want him to stay with us.”

When asked about his future, Osimhen responded, “There are always rumours about me, of course. But I prefer to live in the moment. I am enjoying myself right now. I am enjoying both the club and my life here.”

Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan at the beginning of the season. The club is reportedly paying €6 million of his €10–11 million net annual salary, while Napoli covers the remainder.

Victor Osimhen clinches ‘CAF 2023 Men’s Player of the Year’ award

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, has secured the coveted CAF 2023 Men’s Player of the Year award.

Osimhen’s stellar performance in the 2022–2023 football season, particularly with Napoli in the Serie A, played a pivotal role in this triumph.

Osimhen faced stiff competition from top-tier players like Achraf Hakimi of Morocco, Sadio Mane of Senegal, and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah. Standing tall at 1.85m, the Nigerian striker’s outstanding achievements mark the end of a 24-year wait for Nigeria since Kanu Nwankwo last received the honour in 1999.

During the 2022–2023 football season, Osimhen’s thunderous form propelled Napoli to their third Scudetto in 33 years, following the era of legendary Diego Maradona.

His remarkable feat of scoring 26 goals in the league not only contributed to Napoli’s success but also made him the first African to claim the top scorer award in the domestic Serie A league.

Osimhen’s accolades continued to accumulate as he clinched the Italian league’s best striker prize and secured a spot in the Serie A Team of the Year.

Breaking George Weah’s record as the highest-scoring African player in the Italian league, Osimhen further solidified his status by winning the AIC award, the Italian Footballers’ Association Player of the Year, in December.

Despite Nigeria’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Osimhen showcased his prowess by netting 10 goals in the tournament, including an impressive seven against São Tomé and Principe.

Since making his senior debut for the Super Eagles in June 2017, Osimhen has accumulated 20 goals in 27 appearances.

The pinnacle of Osimhen’s remarkable journey came on Monday in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, when he clinched the CAF 2023 Men’s Player of the Year award.

Napoli, the renowned Italian football club, vehemently denied reports circulating in the Italian media regarding the release of a children’s toy named ‘Cicciobello Bomber,’ inspired by Napoli striker Victor Osimhen wearing the club’s shirt.

The club’s spokesperson stated, “We’re denying any report on the Italian media about releasing kids toy ‘Cicciobello Bomber’ inspired by Victor Osimhen in Napoli shirt.”

The statement continued with a firm assertion that the said product was not authorised by the club. “That product was not authorized by the club — we will settle this issue in court,” added the spokesperson, underscoring Napoli’s determination to resolve the matter through legal channels.

This announcement comes as a response to recent media speculation, which suggested the launch of a toy featuring Osimhen, a key player for Napoli, in the team’s attire.

Napoli has made it clear that they have no connection to, nor have they endorsed such a product.

The club’s decision to pursue legal action notes their commitment to protecting their brand and ensuring that unauthorised merchandise is not associated with their esteemed name.

As the club prepares to address this matter in court, Napoli fans and the public await further developments regarding the unauthorised toy release.

Napoli remains focused on their upcoming matches, striving for success on the field while simultaneously safeguarding their reputation.
