In honor of the late President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto’s legacy, the Nigerian Council of Journalists, Sokoto State Council, is organizing the maiden edition of the Shehu Shagari Memorial Lecture.

This came to the fore at an Extraordinary Congress of the Council held yesterday at the State Press Center. Speaking, the Chairman of the Union, Comrade Tsalhatu Abdullahi Safiyar Magori, of the NUJ, believed that this event would help preserve the legacy of the late President Shehu Shagari and inspire future generations to learn from his works.

“The Council already started making an effort to involve all relevant stakeholders, including the state government, the Sultanate Council, and some elders with proposals, which they hope will receive a positive response,” he said.

The event was proposed to be held on the 25th of February, which is the birth anniversary of the late Turakin Sokoto.

It will feature fundraising for the promotion of his legacies and ideals, such as education (especially sciences), historical literary works, and political documentation of his works.

Also, the NUJ Sokoto Council moved to confer a posthumous award on the late Usman Faruk, the first military governor of the then North-Western State, who donated his building to the council in 1992. The building is now being used as the NUJ’s state secretariat.

Similarly, various committees have been inaugurated at the congress to assist in achieving the collective goals. The committees include a steering committee, contact committee, finance committee, accommodations and reception committee, lecture committee, and speechwriting committee.

Additionally, the committees were given seven days to submit their reports.

Nigerian media industry proposes new regulation to enhance professionalism

By Ahmad Deedat Zakari

The Nigerian media industry has adopted a new mechanism to address ethical and professional problems in the industry.

The decision was an aftermath of a media roundtable organized on Monday, 21st November, 2022.

The amalgam of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Broadcasting Association of Nigeria ( BON) and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) came together to arrive at the resolution.

Media leaders and operators at the roundtable noted that the success of the co-regulation would be attainable via a workable enforcement mechanism.

According to them, co-regulation is attainable when the Nigeria Press Organization (NPO), comprising NPAN, NGE, NUJ and BON work together to make the co-regulation system effective. This will be done through the establishment of the ombudsman at local and central levels.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of the media roundtable convened within the context of the imperative of a strategic response to the challenge of institutionalizing self-regulatory mechanisms by the media for the media.

The communique was jointly signed by the president, NPAN/NPO, Mal. Kabiru A. Yusuf, FNGE, president, NGE, Mustapha Isah, president, NUJ, Chief Chris Isiguzo, MFR, president, GOCOP, Maureen Chigbo and the executive secretary, BON, Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose

The communique noted that measures must be put in place to avoid the creation of bureaucratic structures that may have high-cost implications and hinders the efficient operation of the ombudsman.

The communique reads in part:

“That sanctions for the violation of ethical codes and professional standards shall be determined by the Ombudsman, guided by the regulation.

“That media professional bodies and associations shall partner with media organisations to give wide publicity to the decisions of the Ombudsman,” the communique stated.

On the revised Code of Ethics of Journalists in Nigeria, the communique noted that a bill of rights would be incorporated into the revised code to address concerns over some industry practices that tend to undermine the welfare and safety of journalists.

The communique also said: “That the revised code shall protect investigative journalism by making the public interest exception to instances where undercover methods may be used to obtain information.

“That the revised code shall distinguish between paid content and editorial content to preserve editorial integrity; and a new clause would be inserted to obligate journalists to promote the right of the people to know, freedom of the press and responsibility.”

Our lives are in danger – Zamfara journalists raise concern

By Uzair Adam Imam

The lives of journalists in Zamfara State are in danger as suspected thugs allegedly threatened to deal with working journalists in the state.

The frustrated thugs reportedly beat up the state chairman of Nigeria Union Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Ibrahim Musa Maizare.

The Secretary of the Union, Ibrahim Ahmad Gada, who spoke to journalists, said the traumatic incident happened on Thursday.

Gada alleged that, after beating the union chairman, the thugs also threatened to kill some of them, calling on the authority to intervene on the issue.

It was gathered that the thugs decided to deal with the NUJ chairman after he asked some workers who were at the NUJ Shops Complex at the Union’s Secretariat to renovate a shop for use as a campaign office to stop the work.

The thugs vowed not to stop the work or leave the place because it was given to them by a politician, and as long as that politician is breathing.

“If an armed thug can threaten to kill working journalists, what do you expect? The safety of all working journalists must be guaranteed.

“We are calling all the stakeholders to intervene. How can a thug dictate the way we can use our property in the state,” Gada said.

Although a team of police arrived at the NUJ Secretariat to settle the dispute, the thugs continued to hurl insults at the officials and other members of the union.
