NERDC ES visits Northwest University Kano, VC awarded

The Executive Secretary of the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Professor Salisu Shehu, has paid a courtesy visit to Northwest University Kano on Thursday, 2 October 2025, where discussions were held on strengthening collaboration between the two institutions.

The visit, which took place at the office of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, saw Professor Shehu—former Vice Chancellor of Istiqamah University Sumaila—reaffirming the Council’s commitment to advancing educational development nationwide.

Speaking during the engagement, Professor Shehu explained that NERDC, established in 1988, has 10 directorates with specific functions, with its primary mandate focused on curriculum development for both foundational and secondary school levels.

He emphasized the regulatory role of the Council in ensuring quality teaching materials, stating: “Every book written in Nigeria must be submitted to the NERDC for review before it can go through further necessary processes. This is crucial in safeguarding quality and uniformity in our education system.”

Professor Shehu appreciated the Vice Chancellor for creating the platform for the visit, adding that the synergy between NERDC and Northwest University Kano would be of immense benefit to both institutions.

In his welcome remarks, Vice Chancellor Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa congratulated Professor Shehu on his appointment as Executive Secretary of NERDC, describing it as a proof to his distinguished service in the education sector.

While pledging the University’s readiness to collaborate, he highlighted recent reforms introduced by the institution. “We have amended our system to allow students to be part of entrepreneurship programs, where they will acquire practical skills during holidays. This is in line with global best practices in higher education,” he said.

Professor Kurawa, whose tenure as Vice Chancellor is nearing completion, assured the NERDC delegation that the incoming administration would sustain the partnership. “Though my time as Vice Chancellor is coming to an end, I will ensure that my successor continues with this collaboration,” he added.

The meeting was attended by the principal officers of the University, who joined the Vice Chancellor in receiving the NERDC team.On the same day, past and present staff of the Vice Chancellor’s office presented an award of excellence and gifts to Professor Kurawa in recognition of his leadership.

The event, held in his office, was filled with emotion as staff members expressed appreciation for his dedication and prayed for greater success in his future endeavors.

Responding to the gesture, Professor Kurawa said: “I am deeply touched by this show of love. Working with such a committed team has been one of the highlights of my tenure. I remain grateful for your support and prayers.”

In another development, on 30th September 2025, the Bursary Department of the University, under the leadership of the Bursar, Malam Salmanu Muhammad Kibiya, organized a send-forth ceremony in honor of Hajiya Amina Shehu Maimota, who retired after decades of meritorious service.

The event featured emotional speeches and presentation of gifts from colleagues and friends both within and outside the department.

The Bursar described her as a committed staff whose contributions greatly enriched the University’s financial administration.Speakers praised her professionalism, dedication, and commitment in service, while wishing her a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.

Kwankwaso to receive honorary doctorate as Northwest University holds combined convocation

The Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano, Professor Muktar Atiku Kurawa, has announced that the institution will host its second combined convocation ceremony from Friday, July 25 to Saturday, July 26, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Professor Kurawa described the event as a significant milestone in the university’s development.

He noted that the convocation would cover five academic sessions, from 2018/2019 to 2023/2024, and will include both undergraduate and postgraduate graduands.

The Daily Reality reports that this marks the first convocation for the university’s postgraduate students, following the commencement of its postgraduate programmes in 2021.

Highlighting the uniqueness of this year’s convocation, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, a retired Supreme Court Justice, will be installed as the new Chancellor of the university.

As part of the ceremony, the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on notable Nigerians who have significantly contributed to its growth and progress.

Among them is Engineer Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and founder of the university and its sister institution, Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

Other recipients of the honorary doctorate include philanthropist Hajiya Maryam Sunusi Dantata, the late Alhaji Aminu Dantata (to be honoured posthumously), Alhaji Aliyu Sa’idu Bebeji, proprietor of Aliko Oil, and Alhaji Adamu Yahya (popularly known as A.Y Maikifi).

“These individuals have supported the university since inception and have been instrumental in promoting its mission. We obtained Senate approval to honour them accordingly,” Professor Kurawa stated.

A pre-convocation lecture is scheduled for Friday, July 25, at the university’s City Campus, to be delivered by Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The event will be chaired by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad.Speaking on institutional development, Professor Kurawa disclosed that the university has grown from five to nine faculties, with a tenth — the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies — currently under review by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Plans are also underway to establish a Faculty of Allied Health Sciences offering programs in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Physiotherapy, and related fields.

The Vice-Chancellor also confirmed that the university has reverted to its original name, Northwest University, Kano, following a bill signed by the Governor of Kano State on December 25, 2024.

Describing the institution as “first among equals,” Professor Kurawa emphasized that the university is progressing steadily and remains competitive nationally.

He added that the number of students to be convocated is yet to be finalized but assured that a breakdown by session will be released in due course.

Gov. Yusuf appoints Emir of Lafia as chancellor of Northwest University, Kano

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has appointed the Emir of Lafia, Justice (Rtd) Sidi Muhammad Bage, as the new Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Friday.

The appointment has been widely praised as a strategic move to bridge traditional leadership and modern academia. Emir Bage, a former Supreme Court Justice, brings decades of legal and administrative experience to the role.

Born in 1956 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Bage earned his law degree from Ahmadu Bello University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. He served across Nigeria’s judiciary, culminating in his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2017 before ascending the throne as Emir of Lafia in 2019.

Governor Yusuf noted that the selection of such a distinguished figure aligns with the university’s values of excellence and integrity. “His track record of justice and community leadership will inspire our academic community and support the university’s growth,” he said.

The appointment letter was officially presented to the Emir by the University Council Chairman, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, alongside Vice Chancellor Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa.
