IIIT Central Nigeria Office promotes Islamic values at Kaduna State University

In a rapidly evolving and increasingly secular world grappling with unprecedented challenges posed by science and technology, a groundbreaking symposium was convened at Kaduna State University (KASU) on August 28, 2025, to advocate for the integration of Islamic values into the academic content of tertiary institutions. Organised by the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), Central Nigeria Office, Abuja, in collaboration with KASU’s Department of Islamic Studies, the one-day event brought together leading scholars to explore the philosophical and theological foundations, pedagogical strategies, and practical pathways for embedding ethical and spiritual principles within conventional academic disciplines. The symposium was followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Kaduna State University and the International Institute of Islamic Thought, Central Nigeria Office, on research, publication, and other areas aimed at integrating Islamic knowledge.

The symposium underscored the urgent need for education to transcend mere knowledge transmission and embrace the holistic development of character, ethics, and purpose. Speaking at the event, Dr. Sa’idu Ahmad Dukawa, the national coordinator of IIIT Kano Office, thanked KASU for the opportunity to “interface” and highlighted the IIIT project’s aim to revive the early Muslims’ approach to acquiring knowledge, integrating acquired knowledge with revealed knowledge, and reclaiming a holistic knowledge heritage. On his part, Dr. Aliyu Tanko, Coordinator of the IIIT Central Nigeria Office in Abuja, highlighted the ongoing contributions of the IIIT towards reform in Islamic studies within the framework of contemporary global realities across the Muslim world.

The Philosophical Bedrock: Tawhid as the Unifying Principle

A central theme woven throughout the presentations was the concept of Tawhid, the Islamic principle of the oneness of God, as the fundamental basis for integrating revealed (theological) and rational (philosophical) knowledge. IIIT’s Secretary General, Professor Omar Hasan Kasule, whose virtual presentation from Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia focused on the philosophical and theological foundations, explained that Islam itself is an integration of theology and philosophy. “All knowledge originates from one Creator,” Professor Kasule asserted, emphasising that revealed knowledge (Qur’an and Sunnah) and rational knowledge (human observation and experimentation) are inherently related and integratable.

Historically, Islamic intellectual discourse witnessed significant controversies between proponents of revealed and rational knowledge. Early Muslim thinkers, such as Al-Farabi and Ibn Sina, were heavily influenced by Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotelian thought. Al-Farabi was even known as “al mu’allim al thaani” (the second teacher) after Aristotle. However, this intellectual engagement also led to significant debates. Al-Ghazali, a towering figure in Islamic thought, famously authored “The Incoherence of the Philosophers” (Tahafut al-Falasifa), rejecting certain aspects of Plato and Aristotle’s philosophy and challenging the views of Muslim philosophers. Ibn Rushd later countered his critique in “Tahatuf al Tahatuf” (Incoherence of the Incoherent), arguing that reason and revelation cannot contradict each other because both seek truth.

Later, Ibn Taymiyah rejected Aristotelian philosophy and, in his seminal work “Removing Conflict between Reason and Revelation” (Darʾ taʿāruḍ al-ʿaql wa al-naql), proved that clear rational thought (sariih al ma’aquul) aligns with correctly transmitted revelation (sahih al manquul). This resolution to the perceived contradiction, rooted in the Tawhidi paradigm, underpins the modern movement for the integration of knowledge (IOK).

Professor Kasule further highlighted empirical observations supporting the unity of knowledge, citing discoveries such as:

  • The synthesis of urea from inorganic materials breaks the barrier between organic and inorganic worlds.
  • The atom is the common building block for all physical bodies.
  • DNA serves as a common basis for the biological sciences, demonstrating a higher order.
  • The interchangeability of mass and energy.
  • Brain chemistry explaining mental phenomena.
  • Universal phenomena of anticlockwise revolution, from celestial bodies to electrons and the tawaf around the Kaaba.

These scientific and natural phenomena serve as powerful evidence that the universe is integrated, implying that the disciplines studying it must also find integration.

Value-based Teaching and Research: A Holistic Approach

Professor Ahmad Bello Dogarawa, a seasoned scholar from Ahmadu Bello University, elaborated in his presentation on contextual approaches and pedagogical strategies, highlighting the value-based (VB) teaching and research methodology. From an Islamic perspective, this approach integrates ethical, spiritual, and moral values derived from Islamic teachings into the education and creation of knowledge. It seeks a “middle path,” preserving Islamic values without impeding scholarly progress.

Professor Dogarawa emphasised that VB teaching aims to nurture graduates with a strong foundation of faith, deep knowledge, competence, skills, and value-based creativity and innovation. The approach is founded on six essential elements:

  • Tawhidic worldview
  • Ethical considerations
  • Islamic epistemology
  • Contextualisation
  • Integrative approach
  • Maqasid al-Shari’ah (objectives of Islamic law)

He outlined practical pedagogical strategies, including infusing the Qur’anic worldview into content delivery (e.g., biology for the concept of life as a trust from Allah, economics for the prohibition of interest, and accounting for Islamic contributions to double-entry accounting). He also introduced case studies with ethical reflections.

Critiquing the scientific approach often prevalent in modern research, Professor Dogarawa pointed out its weaknesses, such as:

  • Disconnection from ethics and values
  • Knowledge dichotomisation
  • Secularist worldview
  • Neglect of context and over-reliance on statistical significance
  • Vague claim of objectivity

He presented the Islamic approach as an alternative, combining spiritual, philosophical, and empirical perspectives to foster a more holistic understanding, encouraging purposeful investigation, contemplation, reflection, and verification of truth.

Challenges and Opportunities in Conventional Academia

Professor Khalid Aliyu Abubakar, the Secretary-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), addressed the challenges, opportunities, and strategic pathways for promoting the Islamic worldview in conventional academic environments. He acknowledged the “epistemological tensions” present in modern academia, which are often rooted in secular, materialist, and positivist frameworks that may dismiss metaphysical or revelation-based perspectives as “non-scientific”.

“Universities in the West and increasingly in Muslim majority contexts tend to separate faith from scholarship,” Professor Abubakar lamented, highlighting the resulting erosion of character and learning. He also pointed to internal fragmentation among Muslim scholars themselves, who may “lack consensus on how to integrate Islamic principles with modern disciplines”. Dr. Dukawa also used the analogy of Imam Al-Ghazali, likening acquired knowledge to “eyes” and revealed knowledge to “light” – both are essential, and neglecting either leads to blindness or inability to see. He further elaborated on Ibn Taymiyah’s work, which deconstructed Aristotelian philosophy regarding the relationships between “essence and existence” and “body and soul,” demonstrating how an Islamic perspective provides a more comprehensive understanding of reality and the afterlife.

Despite these challenges, Professor Abubakar identified significant opportunities:

  • Enhancing ethical discourse: Islamic values can enrich debates on bioethics and other fields.
  • Offering holistic paradigms: Integrating material and spiritual aspects of human existence (body, mind, and soul) can broaden understanding in psychology, education, and health sciences.
  • Interfaith and cross-cultural dialogue.
  • Revival of intellectual tradition: Promoting classical Islamic thought (e.g., Ibn Khaldun in sociology, Al-Ghazali in philosophy) and demonstrating its relevance to modern challenges.

Practical strategies include curriculum development that incorporates Islamic perspectives into the social sciences, economics, and psychology, as well as framing research questions informed by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Islamic intellectual history.

A Call to Action and KASU’s Commitment

Professor Kasule also highlighted several societal problems arising from the lack of integrated values in the modern technological era, including:

  • Lack of purposiveness (غائية): Technology advancements occur without a clear vision or purpose, leading to mere “play” or “pastime” (عبث).
  • Blind following (تقليد): People blindly adopt new gadgets and trends without questioning their necessity, echoing historical instances of following forefathers without intellect.
  • Over-reliance on concrete thinking over conceptual thinking: Modern life, with its abundance of imagery, discourages abstract thought, thereby impacting reflection on divine signs.
  • Loss of balance (توازن) and equilibrium (اعتدال): An immersion in virtual reality and a culture of extremes can lead to a loss of natural balance in various aspects of life, contrasting with Islam’s emphasis on moderation.

To counter these issues and advance the integration of knowledge, Professor Kasule strongly advocated for professors and lecturers to write their own textbooks, integrating Islamic values rather than merely consuming knowledge from others. He outlined a detailed process for textbook writing, from general epistemology seminars to specific discipline working groups, curriculum outlines, and structured chapter development, including Islamic input, case studies, and texts from Islamic sources. IIIT offers grants to support authors in this endeavour.

The main achievement of the IOK movement, Professor Kasule noted, has been the establishment of integrated schools and universities globally, alongside integrated curricula and teaching materials, particularly in finance and food technology. However, the remaining challenge is to move beyond merely “adding Islamic values to existing knowledge or subtracting non-Islamic ones” towards creating new integrated or Islamised knowledge, making Muslims “creators and innovators and not consumers of knowledge by others”.

Concluding the symposium, Professor Abdullahi Musa Ashafa, the Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, lauded the organisers and expressed KASU’s deep commitment to the integration agenda. Emphasising that “Islam is knowledge, knowledge is Islam,” he stated that KASU would analyse the presentations, implement the ideas, and organise a follow-up workshop on value-based teaching and research. Significantly, the Vice-Chancellor announced that KASU’s governing council had recently approved a brand-new Centre for Quranic Science, which will serve as a hub for discussions on knowledge, Islamic perspectives, and the relationship with Quranic insights. He also indicated a strong desire to formalise the partnership with IIIT through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The symposium at KASU marks a crucial step in re-establishing the holistic and value-driven pursuit of knowledge that characterised early Islamic scholarship, paving the way for a future where academic excellence is inextricably linked with ethical grounding and spiritual purpose.

Gov. Uba Sani appoints former VC as Education Commissioner

The Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani,  has appointed Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo as the Commissioner of Education. Until his appointment, Prof. Sambo served as Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. 

From 2005 to 2012, he served as the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria. He was later appointed Special Adviser to the President on Energy.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Governor Sani has also redeployed the outgoing Education Commissioner, Prof. Sani Bello (Mainan Zazzau), to the newly created Ministry of Information.

The Governor has also appointed Barrister Gloria Ibrahim as the Commissioner of Youth Development. The appointments and redeployments take effect immediately.

ASUU-KASU embarks on total, indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University (ASUU-KASU), has officially commenced an industrial action today, marking the beginning of a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike.

In a statement released by the Publicity Committee of ASUU-KASU, the union outlined a series of actions that must be observed during the strike. These include the suspension of all Senate, Faculty, and Department meetings, as well as the cessation of project supervision and both physical and online lectures.

Additionally, the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) will not be subject to project defences, field studies, or supervision. 

The union has also prohibited online meetings and mandated that no Continuous Assessment (C.A.) or examination scripts be marked. The processing and submission of results are also on hold, alongside any standing committee meetings.

ASUU-KASU has urged all members to adhere strictly to these directives. The union emphasised that any non-compliance or attempts to infringe upon the strike actions should be reported immediately to the Strike Monitoring Committee (SMC) at the ASUU-KASU Secretariat on the Main Campus.

ASUU: KASU lecturers suspend strike, hail Kaduna government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has suspended its indefinite strike action following an agreement with the state government.

The decision followed the congress meeting held on February 22, 2025 and the approval of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC). 

In a statement released on Sunday, the branch leadership headed by Dr Peter Adamu appreciated the Kaduna State government for demonstrating goodwill towards resolving the issues that prompted the strike. 

According to the statement, the government is releasing funds immediately to pay the 60% withheld September 2017 salaries and the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowances for five sessions. It has also set a timeline for the payment of five months’ withheld salaries (May – September 2022), promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, as well as death benefits and Group Life Assurance.

The statement also featured the government’s commitment to implementing a wage award and granting full autonomy to KASU.

The Daily Reality last week reported the above issues as the causes of the strike.

The KASU chapter of ASUU praised Governor Uba Sani for deviating “from the dark days of the past where members [of ASUU] were victimized for participating in lawful strike actions”.

ASUU-KASU declares indefinite strike over unpaid salaries, allowances

The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike starting today.

In a statement signed by Dr. Peter Adamu, chairman of ASUU-KASU, and Dr. Peter M. Waziri, secretary, the union announced that the decision was approved by the National Executive Council (NEC) following a resolution by the branch congress.

The strike is in response to several unresolved issues, including the non-payment of withheld salaries from 2017 to 2022, earned academic allowances dating back to 2016, promotion arrears, and supervision allowances for the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). 

Other grievances include the non-remittance of pension funds from 2009 to 2019, lack of group life assurance for deceased members, and the failure to implement a 25% and 35% wage award.

ASUU-KASU also demands the restoration of university autonomy and has rejected promises from the Kaduna State Government, citing a lack of substance, specific details, and clear timelines for settling outstanding entitlements.

The strike action is expected to disrupt academic activities indefinitely until the demands are met.

KASU demands 10 essays from applicants seeking lecturing jobs

In its latest recruitment exercise, which commenced on December 18, 2023, Kaduna State University (KASU) is demanding ten essays from every applicant seeking a lecturing position. 

The Daily Reality gathered from an applicant that the writing section is one of the ten steps in the application process. The essay topics revolve around technology in education, teaching philosophy, assessment formats, critical thinking development and journaling.

KASU opened its recruitment portal on December 18 for qualified individuals seeking lecturing jobs in the various departments. The positions include contract, internship, graduate assistant, assistant lecturer, lecturer II, lecturer I, senior lecturer and professor.

The application is completely online, and interested individuals are to create accounts at https://recruitment.kasu.edu.ng and submit their applications on or before December 31.

Founded in 2004, KASU has about 40 academic departments and is the only state university in Kaduna.

A new era for higher education in Nigeria

In his inaugural professorial lecture, Professor Muhammad Muftahu addressed the need for the institutionalisation of higher education as a field of study and professional practice in Nigeria. This came amidst increasing debates about skills over degrees or vice versa and other higher education problems that continue to stunt the growth of education in Nigeria.

In the lecture, which took place on November 14, 2023, at Kaduna State University, Prof. Muftahu disclosed the massive strategic importance of higher education in the development of Nigeria. He had served in various capacities as a professional higher education consultant and researcher. In his journey, he has navigated the multitude of intricacies of the discipline while teaching revered values in various institutions and organisations around the world.

In the years of my professional engagements with Prof. Muftahu, particularly in higher education research, article writing and research reviews, we have both documented facts and valuable insights that have given higher education the needed spotlight. Today, the sum of the knowledge I have gained has eased my current engagement as a content writer at a higher education institution. Prof. always insisted that we had learned from each other until my contracted work arrangement elapsed.

The higher education field is an essential asset to Nigeria’s all-round development, as he highlighted while delivering his lecture titled ‘Institutionalizing Higher Education as a Field of Study and Professional Practice in Nigeria’. It solidifies and amplifies every element purposely chosen to support general development by promoting economic growth and social progress, among other pillars that ensure the thriving of societal development.

Higher education is a multilayered field of endeavour. Existing therein are all tertiary institutions of learning, comprising mono-technics, polytechnics, colleges of education, centres of excellence in research, and universities, among other tertiary structures, not forgetting higher education programs. They are solely established to enable the production of new knowledge through skills, innovation and value-based education. This is necessary to keep steering the affairs of the country towards betterment and advancement.

Growing recognition of the importance of the field, growth and diversification of Higher Education Institutions, the influence of technology, the impact of policy and politics, and the globalisation of higher education are among the major components that transform research and studies in the higher education discipline. These components must be creatively streamlined into the higher education system to institutionalise its practice in full capacity.

Prof. Muftahu’s inaugural lecture comes at a time when the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Nigerian government have sharp disagreements over the autonomy of universities, the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), the allowances of lecturers and notably the ‘Japa syndrome’ that has infested the universities. By the day, resourceful researchers in Nigerian universities seek lucrative, greener pastures abroad. Hence, they are trooping en mass to other countries, leaving behind the slowly decaying and pathetic system at home.

According to Muftahu, “Certainly, governance issues in higher education play a significant role in developing higher education practice in Nigeria. The lack of promotion of evidence-based policies and programs in higher education, as well as throughout the system, contributes to the difficulties in developing a strong pool of higher education researchers in Nigeria.” With the ‘Japa syndrome’ overwhelming the system, organising the strong pool of professionals dedicated to higher education research can be herculean.

The new era of higher education can be achieved through institutionalising it as a professional practice and a field of study in Nigeria. And doing that surely needs a redefined and robust approach. Critical areas that should be highly prioritised to elevate the status quo of higher education include higher education research and policy development, leadership, professional practice, a national strategic action plan and the establishment of a national institute for Higher Education research.

Higher education is a holistic collection of programs and institutions that serve as a think tank for every nation’s development. In advanced countries and developing ones like the US, Malaysia, Singapore, etc., higher education proudly supports decision-making at all levels of governance and public engagement with research and innovation. With the institutionalising of higher education using the key aspects, they have achieved a phenomenal transformation and development.

For Muftahu, “Without a doubt, a country’s overall development depends on the strength of its higher education system, which is heavily reliant on the presence and contributions of higher education professionals”. But, adapting to the contemporary practices of advancing higher education in Nigeria will be tricky.

In fact, with the current hike in university tuition, the tertiary education system is deterring youth from pursuing careers. This will also stagnate the development of a pool of resourceful higher education professionals that can ably streamline global best practices in the country’s education sector.

Nigerians are always on the search by global companies, research institutes, and other prominent organisations, courtesy of their well-regarded knowledge and abilities. A strategic national higher education roadmap is desperately needed to save the experts from trooping out of our country.

It is high time to stop the dramatic display of theatrics by the Nigerian government concerning higher education matters with evidence-based policies at institutional and national levels. These policies and programs can only be achieved by acknowledging the importance of skilled professionals in pursuing higher education excellence and values.

KASU gets new Registrar

The Governing Council of Kaduna State University has approved the appointment of Barrister Samira Balarabe as the new Registrar of the institution.

In a statement by the university’s management on Tuesday afternoon, the new Registrar will be the 4th of the institution. She succeeds Mr Samuel Manshop, whose tenure expires this month.

Barr. Samira joined the services of Kaduna State University in 2006 as an Administrative Officer I in the Registry Department (Legal Unit). She rose through the ranks to the position of Deputy Registrar. 

She holds Multidisciplinary Academic Qualifications, which include: LL B. Hons (2002) and LL M (2022) with a specialization in property law, both from ABU, Zaria. She also has a Master’s degree in Conflict Peace and Strategic Studies (MCPSS) (2016), specialising in Conflict Resolution from KASU, Kaduna. 

Barr. Samira also obtained her B.L. from the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja (2004).

KASU Dean, Prof. Adamu Ahmad Rufa’i, earns a badge of honour

ProfessorAdamuAhmad Rufa’i, the Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Kaduna State University (KASU) and the first and presently the only Professor of Physiotherapy from the North of the (river) Niger, becomes Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (FNSP). The highest and most prestigious honour of Physiotherapy in Nigeria was meritoriously conferred on him for selfless service and support in advancing the cause of training and practice of the profession and society.

The fellowship award was conferred on  Friday, October 14th,  2022 in Enugu State during the 62nd Scientific conference and 63rd Annual General Meeting of the Society, held from 9th to 15th October 2022, at the  Amodeo Event Centre, Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of the National President of the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy, Dr.(Mrs) Nina Nnenna Chigbo and members of her executive council, Chairperson, Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria, Dr (Mrs) Umo Udom Registrar, Medical  Rehabilitation Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria, Dr(Mrs) Olufunke Taibat Akanle, Past NSP Presidents in persons of; Dr Felix Olukayode Faniran, Dr Taiwo Oyewumi, Dr Rufa’i Yusuf Ahmad and other important dignitaries. 

Professor Adamu Ahmad Rufa’i has consistently demonstrated impeccable quality leadership in various capacities and showed a high level of professionalism in all of his dealings.

The erudite Professor is a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT), Nwuga Physiotherapy Foundation, Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Kaduna State University, the pioneer Faculty to reach international standard by commencing the  Doctor of Physiotherapy DPT program in Nigeria. He was also the Chairman of the Education Committee of the NSP from  2016 to 2020.

Along with the erudite Professor are three (3)other eminent Physiotherapistsconferred with this prestigious award. They are Dr Saliu G. Akinwale, Director and Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State. The Chairman, Establishment Committee of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, Dr Alhaji Abdul Wasiu Jimoh. A former General Secretary of the Society of Physiotherapy. Dr Olaniyi Oladire, Director and Head of Department of Physiotherapy Federal  Medical  Centre Owerri, Imo State.

Just In: KASU gets new vice-chancellor

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufa’i, has appointed Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Kaduna State University (KASU).

A statement made available to journalists in Kaduna shows that Prof. Musa is the current University’s librarian.

He holds a PhD in Library Science from Emporia University, Kansas, and an MBA from Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

The new vice-chancellor also obtained his bachelor’s degree in Library Science from BUK and a master’s in Library Science from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
