In a democratic setting, politics is perennial. Even as governance occurs, political actors make permutations, align and counter-align ahead of future elections. The actions of politicians in power largely determine what becomes of the political terrain. Essentially, the performance of an administration eventually tells of the kind of political game that will be played in the next elections.

In Bauchi State, a historically hot political plate, politics is daily, and the electorate plays particular roles in the democratic process. With the Bala Mohammed-led administration almost halfway through, discussions have begun on different fora about who will become the state’s next governor.

This time, the discussions border on issues, given that many people yearn for and aspire to better education, healthcare, agriculture, housing, pipe-borne water supply, security and safety, and employment and pay. There is also a growing concern for a more effective House of Assembly in the state.

Given that no democracy can endure a weak legislature, certain quarters feel that Bauchi State would have been a better place to live and work if it had a more active legislative arm. So, to be placed on a higher development threshold in the future, the state will need a more people-oriented executive arm of government and a legislature that can check its excesses and genuinely represent the people.

Thus, even as the search for a competent politician for the exalted and vital position of the governor of Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections widens, it is also right to search for quite experienced and qualified politicians to fill in the thirty-one legislative seats at the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

While several politicians have indicated interest through actions for the governorship, some are believed to be testing the waters from the background. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar is Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister. At different times, he was a member of the House of Representatives and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Netherlands. Tuggar is on the watch list, given that it is not yet clear whether or not the erstwhile diplomat will throw in the towel when the political bell for 2027 rings. The former legislator is, however, known to have pursued a governorship ambition in the past on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC).

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate is Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Development. The trained medical doctor has been several times the Director-General of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and Minister of State Health. Pate has contested the governorship of Bauchi State in the past under the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP). In the APC governorship primary election ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Chigarin Misau contested and scored nil.

Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (rtd) was Nigeria’s Chief of Air Staff and Ambassador to Tchad at different times. He had a distinguished career in the Air Force, serving as a Cadet Military Training Course (CMTC 5) member in November 1979 and rising through the ranks to become the 20th Chief of Air Staff. During his tenure as Chief of Air Staff, he recorded remarkable achievements, including acquiring new aircraft, establishing new commands and formations, and enhancing the NAF’s capacity for airpower projection. 

In the governorship primary election ahead of the 2023 general elections, Sadique won with 370 votes to beat the runner-up, who got 278 votes. And during the general election, the erstwhile diplomat scored 432,272 votes as runner-up. Sadique, who has shown interest in contesting the Bauchi State governorship position again, is likely a strong contender in 2027, given his votes in the last governorship election.

Bauchi State APC Gubernatorial Candidate, Ambassador, Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (RTD), CFR, had on 29 December 2022 flagged off a free medical diagnosis and treatment for eye patients at the Federal Medical Center, Azare. Hence such a philanthropic gesture earned him more support and love from the concerned citizen in the environs and beyond. 

Later, he joyfully went on to inspect a campaign office that was donated by Usman Sufy. Amidst cheers from supporters and well-wishers. Sufy, a young, dynamic youth leader whose personality is garnished with technical know-how and grassroots mobilization spirit, has assured his total commitment to the Air Marshall project; he joined the train with thousands of supporters across Bauchi State for the sole aim of an APC victory in the 2023 election. Indeed, Sufy’s relevance in the Bauchi political arena shall never be over-emphasized at this material time, and perhaps it will add more value to the Baba Sadieque movement. 

It’s very imperative to note that not only had sufy joined the train, holding the line with progressive minds, but he even meritoriously carried his lieutenant along in an eloquent, compelling, historical, rebounding, and overwhelming manner for the victory of Sadique. Remember, the Arabic meaning of my man’s name is “truthful,” which he symbolizes in all his dealings. 

The massive support the Progressive candidate is receiving in Bauchi North and indeed all over the state will sweep away all doubt, further secure his resounding victory, cement the naysayers’ doubt, yet, reposition the state, and usher in a new and refreshing era of hope, progress, and prosperity, in sha Allah. 

However, Sadique appreciated the resounding welcome and reiterated his commitment to repositioning Bauchi State on the path of progress and development. Yet he assures the people of Katagum that, when given the mandate in 2023, the APC government will focus on people-oriented programs/policies that will be beneficial to the populace of Bauchi State as a whole.

Of course, it’s not obscure to anyone with an in-depth understanding of Politics and Democracy that strategy and astute plans play a pivotal role in setting a candidate on the track to success. And once one fails to plan well, the outcome becomes blurry and unappreciative.

My name is Abdulrahman Yunusa Darazo. I’m a staunch fan of Baba Sadieque Air Marshal and, at the same time, a State member of the Air Marshal campaign council who is additionally yearning to see the success of Amb. Air Marshal to uplift the status of Bauchi state in the sight of both indigenes and non-indigenes.

However, it came to our notice with tremendous and utmost dismay that in the recent campaign of our candidate on Thursday, 22 December 2023, which is the most crucial step in his political voyage. He and his cohort have goofed tremendously this time at the beginning of the game, for they could have made an attractive move. Yet facing one of the most shrewd political actor-cum-incumbent governors of the state. 

Though I must acknowledge that they gathered a mammoth crowd in his first official political campaign, that is not the only way to sell a product. Having many eyes with a dearth of good marketing strategies brought nothing good to the seller. However, when the product is qualitative and still accompanied by good packing, it stands a better chance of being sold quickly.

Sorry to say this, but to my knowledge, the recent outing is one of the most haphazard,  unstructured,  and virtually ill-organized campaigns to have ever taken place in Bauchi state. Therefore the Campaign DG and his team need to wake up and adjust for a better war which is imminent against us. They should discard the holier-than though attitude of feeling they can do it alone.

The dark horse often lurks and waits for a chance to pick and use it against poor managers and political strategists. This tells a lot about the future of this ambitious journey.

More so, the event was packed with lacunae as some stakeholders needed to be carried along in the process. In short, the Campaign Committee should have honoured the members ranging from Local government to the state level with a bit of exception as both have never been briefed ahead of the campaign exercise. Thus,  even some groups among the Artisans were busy complaining covertly for the inconvenience meted yesterday at the Campaign ground.

Hence giving the wrong impression that they have all it takes to go a long way with such a poorly designated team. What are they trying to insinuate, for God’s sake, is rendering our kerfuffle, registering and voicing our grievances as diehard supporters of Baba Sadieque an offence? Let it be if it is, but we must speak for the goodness of Sadieq Baba’s candidature.

Nevertheless, I have a question to ask at this juncture, which requires no response. What are they planning to gain with such a poor outing? What do they stand to achieve with such a gang of uninformed men surrounding our future governor if they tend to go this hazy way? Just ponder on these two questions in soliloquy.   

As a matter of urgency, we need to build something gigantic and reliable that can stand the test of time. Something which even our foes would find hard to fathom, let alone penetrating to score some political points against us. Until we become wary and intelligent of our affairs, our contending parties could take advantage of our parochial approach and use it against us. God forbid.

Conclusively,  it is evident that there is another crucial task to undertake, particularly in the Election. And ignoring some figures thinking they have no relevance whatsoever, won’t be a brilliant idea because they could be the ones to root for massive votes for our giant candidate Amb. Saqieque Air Marshal.

A stitch in time, save nine.

In a democratic setting like ours, leaders are expected to set guiding principles from which followers are expected to learn good conduct and moral behaviour. Sadly, the Bauchi state government is setting a bad precedent, which won’t augur well for the unborn generation.

I was compelled by a video going viral on the internet at the instance of the Bauchi state governor, his commissioners, and top government appointees watching as a car painted with the pictures of APC presidential candidate Bola Ahmad Tinubu, the Bauchi State APC governorship candidate, Ambassador Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar rtd. CFR and his deputy, Aliyu Musa Barden Gabas, were destroyed while they were watching with admiration.

Electoral market volatility makes them susceptible to negative campaigns since “voters have loosened their ties with their party.” Not only that, the people of Bauchi are tired of the misrule of the PDP, yet they resort to diverting attention to their abysmal failure. Education is comatose, infrastructural decay, salary has now become a privilege, pensioners are crying wolf etc.

 As patriotic citizens of Bauchi, we strongly condemn the ruling party’s abysmal attitude. However, it’s expected that they set a pace for the younger generation while noting that Bauchi, as a civilised state is much aware of the happenings in the city. What we desire is a rancorous-free campaign, and we, therefore, urge the APC not to tear the line of the ruling party; let us emphasise to our supporters to shun violence in whatever guise while, at the same time, mobilising people to turn out in mass to vote for the APC at all levels.

As a people-focused grassroots party, APC has continued to champion the cause of issue-based politics while snubbing every temptation by the PDP to lower our standards by joining them in their infamous style of uncouth politics fraught with crass incivility. To put the records straight, Sadique had never been found wanting in such negativity.

As the leading opposition in Bauchi state, we are conscious of our responsibility to be law-abiding and concentrate on the issue-based campaign. We shall do everything possible to discharge that responsibility with total commitment to the rule of law and the sanctity of our nascent democracy. Often, we call on Bauchi State not to be deterred by the lawlessness of the PDP; it’s imperative to use our PVC and send them out of Ramat House because this irresponsibility has no place in our nascent democracy.

The many ills that bedevilled our state include corruption, economic underperformance, abject poverty, and a dysfunctional educational system derived from the action of the ruling PDP. How does a government that benefited from the freedom of expression and association to rise to the highest echelons in the state become so insensitive and uncaring to free campaigns? 2023 we need a purpose-driving and visionary government with a mission to transform the state for the benefit of all and sundry. With Sadique as the 2023 governor, the above is assured.

Indubitably, Bauchi State is one of the hottest political spots in Nigeria. With a very volatile electorate, the state has remained one to watch whenever Nigerians are to go to the polls. More so, especially in recent times, the opposition in Bauchi state is hardly passive. In most cases, the government in power is challenged by a strong opposition which, from recent experience, the latter defeats the former at the polls. 

For instance, in 2015, the then-opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated the ruling Peoples` Democratic Party (PDP), culminating in the emergence of M. A. Abubakar as the governor of Bauchi state. And in 2019, the now-ruling PDP succeeded in ousting the APC from power. Such is the case of Bauchi State, where the electorate is apparently democratically well exposed, so much so that the political landscape is as undulating as it is sophisticated.  

And as Nigerians walk to the polls next year, the political temperature in Bauchi state is already rising, with the two main governorship contenders working hard to outdo each other. However, instead of issues to characterize the electioneering campaigns where the government in power will try to convince the electorate that it has performed well, just as the opposition APC will try to show the electorate how the former has not done well, it beats even the wildest imaginations that politicians in the state have resorted to destroying the billboards of their opponents. There is obviously no need for that.

The PDP-led government in Bauchi state can present its performance sheet to the electorate with a view to convincing the people how it delivered all the promises it made ahead of the 2019 governorship election. It should tell the world how it impacted the lives of the people. On the basis of indices, let the world learn how governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has not failed to transform education, agriculture, healthcare delivery, transportation, roads, security and the civil service in the almost past four years. 

And for the opposition APC, let it convincingly tell the good people of Bauchi state how the PDP-led administration has failed. Also, on the basis of indices, it should prove that it can do better by presenting reasons, amongst which should be the credentials of its standard bearer, Sadique Baba Abubakar. Let the world know how the erstwhile Chief of Air Staff met the Nigerian Air Force in almost the same situation Bauchi state is in today and turned around matters only to leave it a better place. 

In essence, rather than develop primitive tendencies, politicians in Bauchi state can focus on issues so that the electorate can know who is the best and can therefore make informed decisions on election day. After all, democracy is about the people in terms of their well-being and general development.

Air Marshall Sadiq Abubakar needs the support of the APC faithful and, by extension, the good people of Bauchi State to win the 2023 governorship election.

We hope his victory at the just concluded primary election will be a turning point for uniting the party and mark a positive difference – if God gives him the leadership of our dear State in the 2023 general election.

In terms of competence, yes, he’s indeed equal to the task to salvage the people of Bauchi and impact positively on our lives. 

The unity of our party at this juncture is paramount. Therefore, we call on other contenders and all stakeholders to rally around him in giving a new face to the progress and ideals of the party. It’s the foundation the party is built on. However, the task is not expected to be easy, but repositioning the party and moving Bauchi State forward is the people’s expectation. 

We shall move together to make APC’s success achievable in the forthcoming election. The new bride, who’s versatile and indeed a rare gem, can give us new hope for the betterment of our people.

So let’s rally around this formidable candidate with the capacity to take APC back to Ramat House in 2023, in sha Allah!
