Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South in the National Assembly, disclosed that his monthly take-home package amounts to over ₦21 million. 

This revelation came just 24 hours after the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) stated that each of the 109 senators in the Nigerian Senate receives a monthly salary and allowances totalling ₦1.06 million.

The RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, had clarified that senators’ official earnings include a basic salary of ₦168,866.70, along with various allowances such as ₦126,650.00 for motor vehicle fueling and maintenance, ₦42,216.66 for personal assistant, and other minor allowances, bringing the total to ₦1,063,860.00 per month.

However, in an interview with BBC Hausa, Senator Kawu revealed a stark difference in the figures, explaining that while his monthly salary is indeed around ₦1 million, additional administrative fees and allowances he receives as a senator bring his total monthly earnings to ₦21 million. 

According to Kawu, this amount covers various office running costs, including domestic travel and newspaper purchases.

The controversy surrounding the earnings of Nigerian federal lawmakers has been reignited, especially after former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticized the practice of lawmakers setting their salaries and allowances, labelling it as immoral. 

Similarly, a former senator from Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, had previously disclosed that senators receive a monthly running cost of ₦13.5 million in addition to their salaries. 

The debate continues as Nigerians scrutinize the actual earnings of their representatives in the National Assembly.

The House of Representatives has resolved to support the Federal Government by cutting down its salaries by 50% for six months to address the high cost of food and support food sufficiency across the country.

This decision was made on Thursday during the plenary session in Abuja, and the lawmakers also appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience with President Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as it addresses the challenges and hardships faced by citizens.

The House mandated its Committee on Appropriation, Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget to ensure compliance with the resolution. The motion was moved by Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka (APC-Ogun State) and adopted by the House.

Additionally, the House of Representatives has pledged to support the Federal Government with ₦648 million for six months to address food sufficiency and the high cost of food.

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Mr Hashimu Argungu as Chairman, Police Service Commission, PSC.

Also confirmed as Secretary and Member were Chief Onyemuche Nnamani and Frederick Lakanu.

This followed adoption of the report of the Committee on Police Affairs at the Committee of the Whole on Thursday.

Presenting the report Chairman of the committee, Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed (APC-Jigawa) said the professional truck records of the nominees validates the fact that they are persons of proven integrity and ability.

According to him, there is no petition or any adverse security report against their nomination.

He said their qualifications, track record of excellence, professional services and cognate experience confirmed and affirmed their suitability and competence to be appointed for the positions.

He therefore urged the Senate to confirm the nominees.

Contributing, Sen.Seriake Dickson (PDP-Bayelsa) said the committee performed its duties as was requested by the senate.

He said he has a personal knowledge of the nominees in the course of his service at various levels, while urging the Senate to confirm the nominees.

Senator Ahmed Lawan (APC-Yobe) commended the committee for conducting a through secreening on the nominees.

He said the nominees were all qualified for the positions expressing hope that they would perform creditably.

He said there was a disagreement between office of Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission on who should recruit new police officers, saying that the matter ended at the Supreme Court.

This, Lawan said was a a bad experience, saying that the Senate must insist that whatever issues between the two organisations should be resolved.

He expressed believe that the nominees are well qualified to do the job, while urging the committee to closely monitor activities in the two organisations.

President of Senate Godswill Akpabio said committee on police affairs should ensure oversight functions to avoid the mistakes of the past particularly the idea of office of the Inspector-General of Police struggling with the police service commission on issues of recruitment.

“In the last two years, we probably would have had additional 20,000 Nigerians into the Nigerian Police Force.

“But unfortunately as a result of personality clashes, the issues went as far as the supreme Court.

“Whelther withdrawn or not withdrawn, this police service commission we have just cleared today.

“And so Office of the Inspector-General of Police should be cautioned to take the interest of Nigerians into consideration and security of this nation uppermost and not their personal interest.

“They should work harmoniously toward the realisation of Mr President’s vision that Nigerians should be allowed to sleep with their eyes closed.”

At 35, Bello is the youngest legislator in the new NASS. However, his age should not undermine his potential or capabilities. Instead, his youth is an asset and could increase the diversity of voices in the National Assembly.

Bello Elrufai is a legislator to watch. His humility, political acumen, and team spirit make him unique and potentially successful. His initiatives, bills, and passion for teamwork will help him make an impact in the upcoming 10th National Assembly. He may be the youngest, but he is one to watch out for.
