Buhari under fire for pardoning Dariye, Nyame

By Muhammadu Sabiu

President Muhammadu Buhari has been chastised for pardoning two former governors who were imprisoned for corruption.

Recall that on Thursday, the Council of State granted 159 convicts presidential pardons, according to reports.

Former governors of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye, and Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, imprisoned for stealing N1.16 billion and N1.6 billion, respectively, were among the released convicts.

However, speaking at the 1st anniversary of late Afenifere’s spokesman, Yinka Odumakin’s Lecture and Book Presentation, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), a human rights campaigner, encouraged the Federal Government to extend the presidential pardon to individuals serving sentences for minor offences. Falana argued that this would reflect fairness and equity for all.

“All petty thieves in our prisons should be released. Under Section 17 of the 1999 Constitution, there shall be equality and equal rights for all citizens.

“Section 42 of the Constitution says there shall be no discrimination on the basis of class and gender, so you cannot take out a few people on the basis that they belong to a category or section of the society.

“I can assure you that if the government did not release others, I am going to call on lawyers whose clients are left in custody to come to court and challenge the discriminatory treatment of their clients,” Mr Falana was partly quoted as saying.

There’s unholy handshake between bandits, Boko Haram insurgents – FG

By Uzair Adam Imam

The Federal Government of Nigeria said the preliminary reports of what transpired at the Kaduna train attack had revealed a kind of collaboration between the bandits and the dislodged Boko Haram terrorists from the northeast.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this Wednesday while responding to the State House reporters in Abuja.

Recall that The Daily Reality reported how no fewer than nine persons died, hundreds sustained injuries while over sixty were kidnapped when terrorists stormed a passenger train along the Abuja-Kaduna railway a few weeks ago.

Mohammed reportedly intervened after the Minister of Defence, retired Major General Bashir Salihi Magashi, was questioned to provide details on the perpetrators of the train attack.

He said: “What is happening now is that there is a kind of an unholy handshake between bandits and Boko Haram insurgents.

“Preliminary reports of what transpired at the Kaduna train attacks show that there is a kind of collaboration between the bandits and the dislodged Boko Haram terrorists from the northeast. I can tell you very confidently that the Federal Government is on the top of this matter.”

Magashi, in his earlier response to the question, stated that: “Honestly, I think the security chiefs are working hard to unveil those that are involved, and we will tell you very soon those that are carrying out these attacks.

“Both Jos and Kaduna, we will come and explain to the public what is really going on and our efforts to ensure that all these activities are stopped once and for all. We are rarely on top of the situation, we are planning hard, and we will get it out as soon as possible.”

Killings: Reps urge for joint security intervention at Taraba, Plateau borders

By Uzair Adam Imam

The House of Representatives decried the incessant security challenge in communities bordering Taraba and Plateau states, urging the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, to begin joint security operations in the areas.

This reportedly followed the adoption of a motion by a member from Taraba State, Abdulsalam Mubarak.

Mubarak raised an urgent need to mitigate the security challenge of banditry and kidnapping in the areas.

He lamented that banditry in the areas had skyrocketed with several reported cases of killings, rape and kidnappings.

However, the House also pleaded with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and the North East Development Commission to assess the damage cost by banditry and provide palliative to the victims.

Insecurity is one of the menacing challenges that militate against peace in communities bordering Taraba and Plateau and the entire northeastern and northwestern parts of the country.

Several hundreds of people were reported dead due to the insecurity, with many others kidnapped, raped or displaced.

Northern elders ask Buhari to resign over incessant security challenge

By Uzair Adam Imam

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has demanded the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over the incessant security challenge bedevilling the northwestern part of the country.

The Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the call on Tuesday saying that Nigerians cannot continue to live and die under the dictates of bandits.

Baba-Ahmed lamented that Nigerians had shed enough tears and blood without an appropriate response from those with responsibilities to protect us.

He added that President Buhari’s administration does not appear to have answers to the challenges of security to which Nigerians are exposed.

He stated that “We cannot continue to live and die under the dictates of killers, kidnappers, rapists and sundry criminal groups that have deprived us of our rights to live in peace and security.

“Our constitution has provisions for leaders to voluntarily step down if they are challenged by personal reasons, or they prove incapable of leading.
“It is now time for President Buhari to seriously consider that option since his leadership has proved spectacularly incapable of providing security over Nigerians.

“Our Forum is aware of the weight of this advice, and it is also aware that we cannot continue to live under these conditions until 2023, when President Buhari’s term ends,” Baba-Ahmed said.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has declared his interest to contest for the office of the president in the 2023 presidential polls.

In Osinbajo’s declaration speech, he also said he could relate to the suffering and challenges of Nigerians and hence why he wants to be president.

“I’ve stood where you stand and sat where you sit. I know, and I understand our hopes, aspirations and fears from a place of relatable proximity; and I believe that in those hopes and aspirations are the seeds for the great Nigeria that we all desire. I believe that the very reason why the Almighty God gave me these experiences, these insights, and these opportunities, is that they must be put to the use of our country and its great peoples.” He stated.

Nigeria lost $1.5bn to oil theft in 3 months – NNPC GMD

By Farid Suleiman

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has revealed that from January to date, Nigeria has lost a total of N623BN worth of crude oil to the activities of oil vandals and operators of illegal refineries.

Reports indicate that the GMD  made the revelation when he appeared before the House of Representative committee on petroleum (upstream) that invited him to ascertain the cause of Nigeria’s low crude oil output.

Kyari said oil thieves steal an average of 250,000 barrels per day. This situation has limited Nigeria’s crude oil output to only 1.49 million barrels per day, against its OPEC quota of 1.753 million barrels per day.

“What is going on has nothing to do with the PIA. It is purely an act of thieves; acts of vandals which have rendered the industry unworkable and taken us to the level where today, our production is around 1.49 million barrels per day.”

“When you lose about 200,000 barrels per day, even at an average price of 65 dollars per barrel, we lost close to 1 billion dollars between January and March.

“From January to date, we lost an average of 250,000 barrels per day, and at the current price of about 100 dollars to the barrel, even within this short period, we have lost close to 1.5 billion dollars.

“This situation deteriorated to the extent that by March 7, 2022, it came to zero, and so, we shut down the line and declared force majeure. Even on our most reliable pipeline, which is the Forcados pipeline, we still lose about 7000 barrels per day. Needless to say that this is all coming as a result of the acts of vandals and oil thieves,” he said.

However, the GMB assured the lawmakers that massive joint security operations among agencies were ongoing to address the situation.

NYSC cautions corps members against nighttime travel, involvement in social vices

By Muhammadu Sabiu

Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has advised corps members to try and stop nighttime travel to minimize the risk of being involved in car accidents.

In their Places of Primary Assignment, PPA, corps members should avoid social vices such as drug misuse, human trafficking, cybercrime, and advanced fee fraud, he noted.

During the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch “A” Stream 2 Corps Members at NYSC Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai on Thursday, Ibrahim, who was represented by the Akwa Ibom Coordinator, Mrs Chinyere Ekwe, issued the charge.

The DG advised corps members to spend the night at military barracks or any other officially protected site if their journey lasted longer than 6 pm.

He was quoted as saying, “to greatly minimize the risk of road traffic accidents, you are expected to always cut short your trips from 6 pm in the evening and pass the night at military barracks and other locations officially designated as safe.”

APC leader Bola Tinubu admits Nigeria is bleeding, calls for joint action

By Muhammadu Sabiu

Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, warned on Tuesday that Nigeria is bleeding due to the recent wave of killings.

The All Progressives Congress’s National Leader asked everyone to join hands in the fight against banditry.

This comes as Governor Nasir el-Rufai stated that Nigeria is at a fork in the road and that the country must make a difficult decision by 2023 on who will lead the country out of its various problems.

Tinubu, who was in Kaduna for a condolence visit following the terrorist attack on a Kaduna-bound train from Abuja on March 28, donated N50 million to help the state government repair and care for the victims.

“We are facing the current challenges seriously, and we have to do more. Nigeria bleeds on behalf of everybody.

“We need to fight terrorism with all our energy and whatever we have. It’s not shameful for people to be poor, but it’s unacceptable to accept poverty as a norm.

“It’s shameful to be callous, wicked and be a bully or terror to instil fear in humanity, and it’s not acceptable,” Mr Tinubu was quoted as saying.
