Kannywood Movies Review: Bakan Gizo

Director/Producer: Kamal S. Akali

Language: Hausa

Company: Kamal Films International

Premiere: 23/01/2026

Cast: Isa Adam (Feroz Khan), Lawan Ahmad, Zahrah Aliyu, Yusuf Saseen, Bilkisu Abdullahi, Hauwa Farar Lema, etc.

The new series, Bakan Gizo, is unique for departing from the usual Kannywood storytelling. It is much like a thriller, narrated with suspense and tension, while exploring the immoral lifestyle that is rampant among young people today.

Directed by Kamal S. Akali, the story follows Sharifa (Mommy Gombe), a young woman who leaves her home state, Gombe, to study at Bayero University, Kano. There, she is drawn into a new social circle through her free-spirited friends, Salma (Zahrah Aliyu) and Zee (Bilkisu Abdullahi). She also begins an affair with Abba (Yusuf Saseen), who is deeply in love with her but increasingly possessive.

Sharifa is not content with Abba as her partner. She, therefore, enters a new relationship with Sharif (Isah Adam Feroz Khan), a spoiled brat from a wealthy family. However, things take a violent turn when her two lovers discover each other, leading to Sharif being stabbed in the stomach.

Judging by its genre, which is well-suited for a series film format, Bakan Gizo promises to be a compelling and attention-grabbing production. Viewers are already left in suspense to see how the story unfolds, particularly how Sharif’s wealthy mother, a high-ranking police officer (played by Hauwa Farar Lema) who also sleeps with Abba, will investigate the unfortunate incident that befalls her son.

The series appears to draw stylistic inspiration from Indian cinema. This is unsurprising, given director Kamal S. Akali’s creative history, including adaptations of films like Velayudham (as Kanwar Dubarudu) and Drishyam (as Umar Sanda) for Kannywood audiences.

The narrative revolves around a single storyline with interrelated characters. However, while the characters are well connected, some scenes feel disjointed, making the transition between episodes one and two almost convoluted.

On the other hand, although the performances come across as slightly over-the-top, the stellar cast remains highly effective. Seeing Mommy Gombe and Zahrah Aliyu reunite their chemistry from Gidan Sarauta, alongside the rivalry of Isah Adam (Feroz Khan) and Yusuf Saseen (as seen in Labarina), makes for an enjoyable watch.

Finally, it is too early to pass judgment, but I recommend Bakan Gizo for its fresh storytelling approach in the Kannywood series.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei issues stern warning to US amid tension

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has warned that any military attack by the United States would lead to a “regional war” in the Middle East, as tensions continue to rise between Tehran and Washington.

Khamenei issued the warning on Sunday amid the presence of the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other American warships in the Arabian Sea. The deployment followed President Donald Trump’s decision to send the vessels after Iran’s violent crackdown on nationwide protests.

Iranian state television reported Khamenei’s remarks online before broadcasting any video of his speech.

“The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war,” Khamenei was quoted as saying.

He also insisted that Iran had no intention of attacking other countries but would respond forcefully to any provocation. “We are not the instigators and we do not seek to attack any country. But the Iranian nation will deliver a firm blow to anyone who attacks or harasses it,” he said.

Khamenei further described the ongoing protests across Iran as an attempted coup, adopting a tougher stance after earlier acknowledging that economic hardship had contributed to public anger. The protests began on December 28 after the collapse of Iran’s currency and later turned into a direct challenge to his leadership.

“The recent sedition was similar to a coup. Of course, the coup was suppressed,” he said. “Their goal was to destroy sensitive and effective centers involved in running the country, and for this reason they attacked the police, government centers, (Revolutionary Guard) facilities, banks and mosques — and burned copies of the Quran. They targeted centers that run the country.”

Reports indicate that tens of thousands of people have been detained since the demonstrations began. In Iran, charges related to sedition can carry the death penalty, a development that has drawn concern from the United States. Trump has previously described the killing of peaceful protesters or mass executions as red lines for possible military action.

Meanwhile, Iran also scheduled live-fire military drills for Sunday and Monday in the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route through which about one-fifth of the world’s traded oil passes. The US military’s Central Command warned against any threat to American forces or disruption of commercial shipping during the exercise.

In a related development, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, announced that Tehran now considers all European Union militaries to be terrorist groups. The statement followed the EU’s decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization over its role in the crackdown on protests.

Qalibaf, a former Revolutionary Guard commander, made the declaration as lawmakers appeared in Guard uniforms in parliament.

“By seeking to strike at the (Guard), which itself has been the greatest barrier to the spread of terrorism to Europe, Europeans have in fact shot themselves in the foot and, once again, through blind obedience to the Americans, decided against the interests of their own people,” Qalibaf said.

Lawmakers later chanted “Death to America!” and “Death to Israel!” during the session.

Trump, for his part, has said Iran is engaged in talks with the United States, even as he declined to confirm whether he had decided on military action.

“I don’t know that they will. But they are talking to us. Seriously talking to us,” Trump said, while stressing the need for a “satisfactory” deal to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

However, Iran’s Supreme Leader has repeatedly ruled out direct negotiations with Washington. Despite that, Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian security official, wrote on social media that “structural arrangements for negotiations are progressing,” although no public evidence of direct talks has emerged.

Nigerian soldiers eliminate top BH commander, 10 others in Sambisa night operation

By Sabiu Abdullahi

Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have recorded a major operational success with the killing of a senior Boko Haram commander, Abu Khalid, alongside 10 other terrorists during a night operation in Borno State.

This is contained in a statement signed by Sani Uba, Lieutenant Colonel and Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, and dated February 1, 2026.

Abu Khalid was identified as the second-in-command of Boko Haram in the Sambisa Forest. He was also described as a key figure within the terrorist hierarchy who coordinated operations and logistics across the Sambisa axis.

The development came less than 24 hours after troops neutralised another notorious Boko Haram/ISWAP commander, Julaibib, who operated within the Gujba axis of the Timbuktu Triangle.

According to the military, troops of Sector 1, working with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) under Operation DESERT SANITY, engaged the terrorists at the Komala general area of Konduga Local Government Area at about 11:00 p.m. during a night offensive.

Following the encounter, the troops recovered five AK-47 rifles, magazines, several bicycles, assorted logistics and food supplies, as well as a large quantity of medical consumables.

The military confirmed that no casualty was recorded among the troops during the operation. It added that the morale of personnel remains high as clearance operations continue across the Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains, Timbuktu Triangle and other known Boko Haram and ISWAP hideouts in the North East.

The Joint Task Force, North East, reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the tempo of operations until all terrorist elements are neutralised and lasting peace and economic stability are restored to the region.

The Military High Command also commended the troops for their sacrifices and dedication in the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities in the North East, while urging them to maintain the current operational momentum.

Iran labels European militaries ‘terrorist groups’

By Anwar Usman

Iran has labelled European countries’ armies “terrorist groups”, its parliament speaker said Sunday, following the EU’s decision to apply the same designation to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Lawmakers wore the green uniform of the Guards in a display of solidarity at the legislative session, where they chanted “Death to America”, “Death to Israel,” and “Shame on you, Europe”, state television footage showed.

Slamming the bloc’s “irresponsible action”, speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that under “Article 7 of the Law on Countermeasures Against the Declaration of the IRGC as a Terrorist Organisation, the armies of European countries are considered terrorist groups”.

Recalled that, the law was first passed in 2019, when the United States classified the Guards as a terrorist organisation.

The Sunday’s session was held on the 47th anniversary of the return from exile of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic in 1979.

The Guards are the ideological arm of Iran’s military, tasked with safeguarding the Islamic revolution from external and internal threats.

They have been accused by Western governments of orchestrating a crackdown on a recent protest movement that left thousands dead.

Tehran has attributed the violence to “terrorist acts” fomented by the United States and Israel.

The European Union agreed on Thursday to list the body as a “terrorist organisation” over the response to the protests.

The step matched similar classifications enacted by the United States, Canada, and Australia.

The legislative session came as Iran and the United States have traded warnings and threats of potential military action.

Tehran’s response to the protests prompted US President Donald Trump to threaten to intervene, dispatching an aircraft carrier group to the region.

In recent days, however, both sides have insisted they remain willing to talk.

“Contrary to the hype of the contrived media war, structural arrangements for negotiations are progressing,” Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Saturday.

Trump later confirmed that dialogue was taking place, but without withdrawing his earlier threats. He told Fox News that Iran was “talking to us, and we’ll see if we can do something, otherwise we’ll see what happens… we have a big fleet heading out there”.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday that “a war would be in the interest of neither Iran, nor the United States, nor the region”, during a call with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to Pezeshkian’s office.

FUD Governing Council to hold inauguration of Prof. Gumel as VC on February 10

By Ibrahim Yunusa

The inauguration of the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Professor Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, will hold on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, as scheduled.

This was disclosed to FUD Newsletter by Barrister Shamsu Ubale Jibrin, counsel to the defendants, the Federal University Governing Council and 22 others in a suit challenging the vice-chancellorship selection process.

The suit was filed by Professor Abdulsalam Balarabe, one of the applicants for the position, who through his counsel sought an order restraining the Governing Council from conducting the swearing-in and handover ceremony.

Barrister Jibrin said he presented overwhelming documentary evidence before the court to show that the selection process was concluded in full compliance with the advertised requirements, adding that the claimant failed to provide proof of any breach of due process.

According to him, evidence before the court showed that Professor Gumel met all the eligibility requirements, scored the highest marks, and emerged first at the end of the interview process, leading the Governing Council to appoint him as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.

He further stated that Professor Gumel satisfied the mandatory 15-year university work experience requirement.
Barrister Jibrin explained that although the court did not grant the application to stop the inauguration, it adjourned the case to February 23, 2026, after the ceremony.

He described this development as a technical victory for the Governing Council and Professor Gumel, adding that he intends to present two key motions when hearing resumes on the adjourned date.

Bello Matawalle claims Tinubu will win ‘convincingly’ in 2027

By Sabiu Abdullahi

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a decisive victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Matawalle made this statement on Saturday while hosting guests at his residence in Abuja. He urged Nigerians and political leaders across the country to rally behind the Tinubu administration and support its reform agenda.

According to the minister, the President’s leadership approach and policy decisions are already placing Nigeria on the path to economic recovery, institutional strength, and national cohesion. He cautioned politicians against early power struggles and political manoeuvres aimed at weakening the present government, which he said could damage the nation’s democratic process.

He said, “President Tinubu has taken bold steps to stabilise the economy and strengthen national institutions.

“Those plotting to unseat him are motivated by personal interests rather than the public good. If allowed to complete his reform programme, I am confident the President will win convincingly in 2027.”

Matawalle stated that the impact of the administration’s policies is becoming visible across the country. He noted that the northern region has recorded notable improvements, particularly in governance reforms, security measures, and institutional growth.

He also called on political stakeholders to embrace dialogue and cooperation instead of division. The minister stressed that national interest should take precedence over personal ambitions.

Matawalle further appealed to citizens to support government programmes aimed at achieving sustained economic growth, improved security, and stronger unity among Nigerians.

“Rather than engaging in rancour and short-term political calculations, we should focus on solutions that deliver jobs, security, and stronger institutions for Nigerians,” he said.

Family demands justice after Nigerian Army convoy allegedly killed Benue farmer on Katsina-Ala Road

By The Daily Reality

A family in Benue State has accused a military convoy of killing a farmer, Mr Aondover Tseshom David, along the Katsina-Ala Road, an incident they described as reckless homicide and an abuse of power, SaharaReporters, a Nigerian online newspaper, reported.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. The deceased was said to have been hit by a military convoy while attending to his daily activities aimed at supporting his family.

Relatives alleged that after the incident, security operatives dumped the farmer’s corpse at a police station. The body reportedly remained there until family members were contacted and compelled to arrange its retrieval.

The deceased’s first child, Miss Aondover Msendoo, demanded justice and described the incident as devastating and inhumane.

“My name is Aondover Msendoo. I am a 300-level Nursing student at Bayero University, Kano, and the first child of six,” she said.

“On Thursday, January 22, 2026, my life and that of my entire family were irrevocably shattered. My beloved father, Mr. Aondover Tseshom David, a poor, hardworking farmer from Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, was brutally run down and killed by a military convoy along the Katsina-Ala Road.”

She said the family’s pain was worsened by how her father’s remains were treated after his death.

“The horror did not end with his death. His lifeless body was carelessly dumped at a police station as if he were trash, and left there until we, his traumatised family, could gather the strength and money to retrieve him. This act of profound indignity added immeasurable pain to our already unbearable loss,” she said.

Miss Msendoo said her father was the sole provider for the family and struggled daily to cater for his wife and six children.

“My father was the only provider for our family. His life was one of struggle, sacrifice and resilience. Just last July, we endured the agony of his kidnapping from his farm. We sold what little we had and borrowed money to pay a large ransom for his release,” she said.

She added that after his release, he returned to farming in an effort to rebuild their lives before his death.

“He survived criminals and kidnappers, only to be killed not by bandits, but by those sworn to protect the lives of Nigerians,” she said.

According to her, the family now faces severe hardship. She said her mother is overwhelmed, while relatives have mounted pressure for a quick burial due to increasing mortuary bills.

“We are now destitute. My mother is broken and under intense pressure from extended family members to bury my father immediately because of escalating mortuary costs. My five siblings are very young, and their future is now uncertain,” she said.

“As a student, I am struggling to see how I can continue my education while carrying this burden and at the same time fighting for justice for my father.”

Miss Msendoo rejected suggestions that the incident was accidental.

“We are convinced this was not an accident. It was an act of reckless homicide and a gross abuse of power, followed by the degrading treatment of my father’s remains. This speaks to a culture of impunity that has become common in our country,” she said.

She expressed concern that the case could be ignored without public attention and legal action.

“We fear that without the powerful voice of Nigerians and strong legal advocacy, this crime will be ignored and my father will become just another anonymous statistic,” she said.

The grieving daughter appealed to human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), to intervene and assist the family.

“Therefore, I humbly and desperately appeal for help. Please help us secure justice for my father. Help us hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure that no other family goes through this twin trauma of loss and indignity,” she said.

“We need guidance, legal expertise and strong advocacy to navigate this fight against a formidable system.”

Despite their circumstances, she said the family still believed in justice.

“We are poor, but we are not without hope. We believe in the rule of law and in champions who make it work for people like us,” she said.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army and the Benue State Police Command had not released any official statement on the incident.

US Mission cites funding lapse, suspends regular X updates in Nigeria

By Sabiu Abdullahi

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to regular updates on its official X account, citing a lapse in government appropriations.

The Mission, however, assured the public that passport and visa services would continue, subject to prevailing circumstances.

The disclosure was made on Saturday through a post on the Mission’s verified X handle, @USinNigeria. It stated that routine updates would stop until full operations resume, except where urgent safety and security information becomes necessary.

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the post read.

Despite the funding challenge, the Mission said scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US embassies and consulates abroad would remain available as conditions allow.

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the Mission stated.

It added that further public communication would be limited until full operations return, aside from messages related to urgent safety or security concerns.

The Mission also advised individuals who require updates on services and operational status to consult the official US travel website for accurate information.
